So, there's a new movie in the works. It's called Brokeback Mountain and stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger as gay cowboy lovers.

As one might well expect, the IMDb boards are spoogy. Besides the obvious OMGNOGAYPEOPLE!!!!, I came across this thread about how gay movies are good but lesbian movies don't count.

Of course there's the rejoinder of "I don't like seeing ANY sex in the movies!" to which venusebony replies that the term homosexual is sexist.

I think that is is very LESOBPHOBIC and ANTI LESBIAN to suggest that lesbians aren't the real "homosexuals." First, I have a problem with the term "homosexual" which of course is based on patriarchial principles about gay men. Gay men from my own personal experience many are VERY SEXIST and ANTI WOMAN. Lesbians struggle with a lot of crap from heterosexism from the mainstream, sexism/male violence from men, and sexism from gay men. Lesbians also are discriminiated by the gay male community.

Yes, gay men are anti-woman. The same way lesbians are anti-man. They don't want to FUCK THEM!

Plus, of course, the reminder, in reply, of the source of the word homosexual. I just had to throw that in.

But homo in that context doesn't mean 'man'. It means 'the same'. If it was referring to somebody who's attracted to men then straight women are homosexual. I suppose homogeneous and homozygous are sexist words too? (Damn those sexist biologists!)

Homoerotica

Well, I hope the movie has some good acting in it. I do not personally endorse sex in movies, but then again, I'm "so desensualized" that I don't mind too much. Hmm, but seeing that the movie promotes the two gay cowboys, I would say we're going to see some man-lovin' action.

This post isn't making much sense, but personally I prefer the homoerotica offered in LOTR and Troy to complete overtness.

Yes, the sexism of homosexual is built into the very word! It's got man-ness all over it! See? "Homo" -- well that's "same," and "sexual"... uhh...

Well, Latin is hard! Quit oppressing us with their Greco-Roman entomology, men!

Although I am unique in the fact that I don't want to see any actor I like kissing, touching, or having sex with any person in a film--male or female--(it's not because I'm a prude; far from it. It's because I'm envious of anyone who gets to touch any actor I adore)

She thinks that makes her unique? She must not know anything about anime fandom. ("EEEWWWW kagome iz kissin MY inuchan!!!!1") Or Harry Potter. (Anyone else remember those girls who beat up the actress who was going to play Pansy Parkinson because they were jealous of her getting close to Tom Felton?) Or fandom, period.

Wheee, we must go and tell the lesbians that they never get bashed by homophobes because the homophobes only hate the male gay but think they are hot! They will be so happy to hear. Thank you for the news, zombiefang.

And here I thought lesbians get the full homophobic dose too, either outright or else as soon as the morons face the fact that their attention is inexplicably not appreciated.

Fresh in from venusebony:

The term homosexual is patriarchial precisely because it distorts difference it ignores the experiences, the livelihood, and the essence of lesbianism. The term homosexual refers to gay men whom happen to be male and many are also very sexist. Gay men and straight men are STILL MEN and they have MALE PRIVILEGE.

Yes heterosexual men have dreams about lebsians but straight men are THE ENEMY.
There have been films such as MONSTER, with Charlize Theron that has lesbianism. Yet no one has questioned the anti lesbian themes in A LOT of television and film programming. The subversive message in heterosexist films such as MONSTER predicates that lesbianism is somehow "dirty" "wrong" or just plain bad when it isn't. The heterosexist mainstream media praised Theron for playing a killer and most importantly for playing a lesbian killer in MONSTER. Once again, lesbianism is depcited as violent and threatening. So I don't see how advanced or open minded society is to lesbianism. I watched the television LAW AND ORDER and on a few episodes that dealt with lesbianism of course lesbians are depicted as man killers. The Sharon Stone thriller "Basic Instinct" was anti lesbian as well once again lesbians depicted as a man killer. Also lesbians are often protrayed as women that are confused about their sexuality which of course if false. On the television show Friends Jennifer Aniston's friend Winona Ryder played a lesbian. Is that acceptance?
Of course not, Lesbianism is not a show, it is not about titilation for heterosexual men. If society is so pro lesbian why are lesbians fearful of losing jobs, housing, discrimination in employment and I can go on and on.
We are also women we encounter male violence or attempts from male violence all over the place. Society is very anti women and anti lesbian.
Heterosexual men are also VIOLENT AND THEY RAPE LESBIANS. I HAVE to be careful when I leave my house at night because I know some loser man is going to try to approach me or talk to me. Lesbians by being female we definitely have a lot of battles to fight. For instance, a lot of heterosexual women are VERY anti lesbian yet society REFUSES to discuss this prejudice as well. Straight society does not ACCEPT lesbians. And also, I am DISGUSTED and offended by lesbian imagery that predicates to heterosexist standards and appeals to the heterosexist oligarchy!

I vote troll. Not even psycho feminazis are this... well... psycho. (On the other hand, I've never been to a women's college, so what do I know?)
