Current mood:Wha...?

not sure sports is fandom, but anyway...
I am a basketball fan and am looking forward to Game 7 between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Sacramento Kings to see who will advance to the next round to play the Los Angeles Lakers.

The T-Wolves/Kings (liek omg now i think uv teh slash) game is going to be an important one. Minnesota player Kevin Garnett, the league's MVP, made the following comment regarding getting psyched up for the game:

"I'm sitting in the house loading up the pump, I'm loading up the Uzis, I've got a couple of M-16's, couple of nines, couple of joints with some silencers on them, couple of grenades, got a missile launcher. I'm ready for war."

People were offended by the war analogy and Garnett later apologized.

Some people think Garnett didn't owe an apology. And damn, some people over at the ESPN message boards are wanky about it. Plus, we go zero to Iraq in just a few sentences.

To summarize: I am so sick and tired of people talking about [Kevin Garnett] and his war remarks. Why are we in Iraq? Trent Lott a racist politician has made it clear that he is in fact a racist and the president George Bush has supported him. And [Kevin Garnett] I feel where you are coming from.

...

Yeah.

Needless to say, a couple flames start up. A listing of posts in the thread is available here for your viewing pleasure. It could die, it could grow. God, I hope it grows.

This is exactly what I think of when I see multimillionares sinking baskets into a hoop.

We should all salute these brave men and women *sheds a tear*

Oh yeah, KINGS IN 04!

Eh, so..WHY exactly did his statement offend people? It was a figure of speech, morons. It's not like he said, "I'm gathering all these weapons and i'm gonna go take em out like the terrorists took out the world trade center." Yeesh.

Is he the same guy who was involved in the big "gay" controversy?

Uhm...that wasn't very clear, was it? *tries again* Was he the play who called someone else/was called gay?

I think that was Kobe Bryant. Or possibly John Rocker. Whatever, I don't know from sports.

I looked it up, and Garnett was the one getting called gay.

His apology was all over the news here, and the reaction in my household was rather WTF? Seriously, the rise of professional sport is thought by many to serve many of the same functions as war: it gives us a side to get behind (go Wolves!), it creates a sense of community based on place (why, yes, I live in Minnesota), and it (more arguably) helps support local economy. Hell, other athletes have made the same analogy throughout history.

The poster who wrote (sarcastically) "Good to see the media finally catering to white middle america for a change!" cracked me up, because that was the basis for my first reaction: it couldn't POSSIBLY be that TPTB get nervous when a Black man starts talking about guns.

But the absolute gem of the wank for me was "Shut up futurecoach of the Iraqi soccer team. You don't have a freakin clue what a war is you dumbazz. Football is a game not war." Two tries, there, buddy, and you still missed it. The game in question is basketball.

it (more arguably) helps support local economy.

Especially in the case of the Green Bay Packers, whose loyal Cheeseheads own the franchise. I mean, yeah, that's football and this is basketball, but still.

That was my thought exactly. A black man mentions hoarding guns! Ahh, let's freak out, but pretend it's about him offhandedly mentioning war instead!

It's prime time for racism in the name of patriotism and national security.
