Um. Hi. First posting of wank. I think this qualifies. If not, I apologise.

More Chuunin wank.

Someone posts lines from a current volume of the Viz translated Naruto and...

We all hate Viz now.

So far, it's rather small and little more than they spewing forth venom over how this is so horrible and Viz sucks, etc, etc.

I'm tired of wanky Naruto fans bitching over the Viz translations. A bunch do on the forums I read, on my LJ friends list....*eye roll* And they say that THIS is why they won't support the author, because they don't want to buy the crappy crappy Viz versions (although you know that they most likely wouldn't have supported Kishimoto anyway if the translations were good or by buying the Japanese versions).

O noss, it ruined teh storyyyy!!!. It's not just like the *free* scanlations!!!1`1

Admittedly, Viz could probably work on their translations, but it's NOT the end of the world like they think. *Doesn't really care because she reads the Japanese versions anyway*

The best part is the bitching over the overscore/macron/whatever-it's-called over the long vowel instead of OMG DOUBLE VOWEL! Romanization-method wank. Mmmm.

Are they actually using that circumflex though? I could aaaaalmost see some minor irritation if they didn't use it (since it's definately pronounced with the long "a" of "Gaara" and not the shorter "Gara"). It still shouldn't be a big deal, but mountain, molehill, blah blah blah.

Normally Chuunin is a pretty sane place, but every once in a while this "I hate Viz!" thing pops up and I hurt myself rolling my eyes. And while I'll be the first to go "Bwha?" at some of the decisions that Viz makes in regards to translations for Naruto, these people are just so full of it. I would wager money that a lot of them are not buying Viz stuff because they're too damned cheap and are using the translation as a very convienient excuse.

Me too. These are the same people who whine about how they can't find the free fansubs online anymore after an anime gets licensed, because the fansubbers actually (gasp!) decided to OBEY THE LAW.

And yeah, I have beef with translations occasionally, but you know what? Ten years ago, none of this stuff was being translated at all, well or poorly. So far, the worst "translation mistakes" I've seen are translators making choices that differ from those who write entire fics in fangirl Japanese. So they called him "Master Kakashi." So what? THAT'S WHAT SENSEI MEANS, DUMBASS. Either learn to read Japanese or suck it up and deal.

It seems to me that if I were the japanese creators of this manga, I'd be so desperatly insulted by the way they were ruining my story and characters.

It seems to me that most manga writers are, ya know, sensible people who let other people do their job, instead of telling them how to do it.

Akamatsu Ken was not insulted by the plans of censoring Nagima, even. Just surprised. Because it's not the freaking end of the world. kthxbai.

Commenter: (On the translation of Gai's name as 'Guy') Err. Where did you get the pronunciation for that? They actually put a little side note? O__o;

OP: Nope, it's a french name and I take French. Pronounced Gee in English too.

Because naturally, there's no English name spelt 'Guy' and pronounced (whoa!) the same way as the original Japanese name. And naturally, Viz not only knew about the French pronounciation, they had full confidence all their readers knew about it too. < /sarcasm>

Mind you, would've been worth having Viz romanize his name as 'Gai' just for the fun of seeing how many new readers misprounounced it as 'Gay'.

I like that if you scroll to the very bottom there's someone who says, "I have some Japanese Naruto dictionary and...they spell Gai "Guy" as well."

People, he will always be "Gai" in your hearts! And if it bothers you that much go through the volume with white-out and a pen.

On the topic of translator-bashing, I'd just like to say that...well, most of the time fansubs/fanscans are just as bad (if not worse) than commercialized translations. Yes, American companies have been known for their blunders (*cough* Generator Gawl *cough*), but as someone who watched fansubbed anime understanding the language people make stuff up all the time. People assume that fansubbers are going to remain more true to the anime, but that doesn't mean their Japanese is perfect.

A while back on a Hellsing comm translations from the 2nd book were brought up, and it was determined that the fanscans altered translation slightly to enforce the Alucard/Integra pairing. Not a big deal, but it was the kind of thing AxI shippers might use in pairing debates, and it was Dark Horse that got it right.

Not that you can justify all awful translating, but it's not like you can trust anyone's work 100%.

*blinks* I really can't see what they're complaining about. I mean, insofar as I can tell, it's just a matter of a few small name changes -- the plot, the characterization and the general integrity of the show is still intact, yes? I mean, I understand it's mildly annoying to be thinking of someone as one thing and then suddenly finding out everyone else is now thinking of them as something else, but it's still the same character, right? And really, there are some shows where even the fansubbers can't agree at all. (See: Dragonball, and the fifty-thousand ways of spelling Krillin. I now pronounce it one way and spell it another, it is most bewildering).

I mean, if that was all that was done to my favorite shows, I'd be dancing in the streets, or at least around my bedroom. Being as my first love was.. *mumble* Dragonball Z, I can safely say that as long as they keep my character dynamic and plot intact, I won't be complaining. After all, Cardcaptors, anyone? Count your blessings, it's only spelling!

Oh no, Viz has translations they don't like. Wah, wah, wah. Doesn't mean they have to bother with Viz. All they have to do is keep reading the translation they like, because who the fuck cares if they don't like someone else's translation? Why should it bother them, they can just stay in their little fansubbing bubble and not worry about how other people tranlate it.

I'm guilty of not liking Viz to the point of hoping they won't get their hands on the manga I like. I mean the translations are accurate, but they're not good.

I don't mean the names, or even the suffixes (though I squee like a fangirl if they keep the suffixes). I mean whoever's translating the dialogue just had no ear for dialogue.

Granted, most of their series don't have much subtlety to beginning with *eyes Alice 19th*, but I've read scanlations, then bought the Viz comic later. Both have a character play Exposition Woman, but the scanlation has it sound like an actual human might say that. Viz isn't so good at that.

Tokyopop is slightly guilty of that too, but I <3 them.

My problem with Viz has always been their hideous overpricing - something that has been corrected thanks to digital technology and the magic of the competitive marketplace.

While I'd rather they did more interesting stuff than Naruto and Dragonball, they also give me CLAMP and Tezuka, and 300 pages of Shonen Jump for $5.00, I'm not gonna bitch.
