Gaia and fandom: when Wanks collide
This is kind of fandom_wank material, and kind of gaia_wank, but since I know very little about Gaia, I hope you'll all forgive me for posting this here.

Anyway. It's FUNNY.

So, Barefoot Sean posts some art on Gaia, asking for constructive criticism. As you do. This goes on quite well, with him posting numerous examples of his 'fantastic art', until the end of the second page. It is at this point that Major Malfunction points out to the masses that in fact, all this art is by a well-known fantasy artist called Wayne Barlowe. He can't immediately find examples, though, as he knows this because he owns a book of Barlowe's art. Wank immediately ensues. Barefoot Sean informs the masses that he has never heard of this 'Wayne Barlowe' guy, and that any similarities between their art is pure coincidence, oh, and he signs his work 'B' because of 'Barefoot'. Obviously not 'Barlowe'.

The English language is mangled. The word 'frippary' is used, misspelled and horribly out of context.

On page four, Major Malfunction successfully finds two matching examples. Barefoot Sean tells the world that, despite only having scanned the images that day, somehow they have been stolen. After all, you can't trust Russian websites.

A few posts later, he hastily changes his song. In fact, he is a friend of Mr. Barlowe's, and is allowed to use his art, as it was a collaboration. Never mind the fact that it was probably drawn before Barefoot Sean was born.

Much boggling ensues. The wank escalates. A girl in pink shows up to defend, using very bad typing. Many posters fail to read the previous posts.

All in all, everything you could want in your well-balanced wank diet.

Having never been to Gaia before, I will admit that seeing this wank with the little tiny avatars is so surreal. They're so cute ,but everyone's so strange...

I so feel his pain.

I mean this "not a pipe" thing? All me. Totally mine. I don't know who this "Magritte" fucker is, but he obviously stole my idea, got a time machine, and went back to the 1930s so that he could look like he'd had it first. The bitch!

(Anonymous)

The moment that I clicked the first link on this post, the first thing that I saw was an image ripped straight from my (or anybody else's) copy of "Barlowe's Guide to Fantasy" (or "Barlowe's Guide to Extraterrestrials," can't remember which). I'm just amazed that so many people commented without recognizing Barlowe's art. These two books are fantastic and among my most treasured posessions. It's sad to think that Barlowe is still so little known that somebody actually thought that they could get away with passing Barlowe's work off as his own... And that for a little while, at least, he did.

I don't get it. If I wanted to rip someone off I'd find an artist NOT everyone and their dog has heard of, owns books of, or has seen their books in every better bookstore. I mean, please - at least be somewhat smart about it. Don't post it in forums where five bajillion people from every single continent go online. Chances that someone knows where it comes from are just that much higher. If you wanna con someone, at least be halfway decent at it.

Does anyone remember that story that was a series of letters between a would-be author and a publisher? The author kept sending in work and the publisher kept sending it back saying it was plagiarized from another author from an earlier time-period. The guy swears up and down he wrote the story he sent in and can't understand what's going on. Eventually his letters get extremely desperate with him hypothesizing that the dead author somehow traveled through time and stole his stories. Of course, no one believes him and they think he's delusional.

...

OMG, BAREFOOT SEAN! I BELIEVE YOU!

I don't understand why people do things like this. I mean, is internet-prasie really worth even the minimal effort? It's just words on the screen! I mean, I get it when you've created something, and you're pleased that other people like it too, but why would you be pleased random anonymous people are praising some guy you don't know who draws better than you?
