A slightly belated American Idol wank report.
I was trying to get to journalfen all yesterday afternoon and evening just so I could post this, but alas. Better late than never!

So as most people who haven't been living under rocks (and some who have) know, this week was the big American Idol finale. Tuesday night, Diana and Fantasia, the two finalists, each sang three songs in the final competition. Fantasia ended on a high note, the judges praised her. Diana ended on a low note, and they did not deny that. And then we were set to wait for the results show Wednesday night.

However, Diana fans were posting constantly on the LJ community "americanidol" - not praising Diana (probably because they really couldn't, after her last performance), but insulting Fantasia. For instance, the "AHAHA SHE SOUNDZ LIEK DONALD DUCK post. Oh, and nothing makes people want to vote for your favorite like great big annoying fonts with sparkly backgrounds. Then they started putting forth explanations for Diana's suckage on the last song. They involved technical difficulties - oh wait - the judges are all totally biased towards Fantasia, so THEY DECIDED TO SCREW DIANA ON HER LAST SONG OMG!!!! Also, shame on that horrible biased MSN.com for cutting off part of Diana's hair and putting Fantasia in the center of an image!!

(And for the record, I'm not a huge fan of either Diana or Fantasia, so I'm not even being defensive here - it's just that the Diana fans were repeatedly ridiculous.)

Fortunately, after the results show, the wank died down a great deal. But maybe the rabid Diana fans were too busy crying. Also note the wank in this thread at idolforums about how "Mantasia" doesn't deserve to be the American Idol because she has tattoos, piercings, and a baby. The last part has been a common theme, of course - but I chose to link this example of it because the poster also whines about how Fantasia was favored because she came out with a huge choir singing behind her for the last song of Tuesday night - ignoring the fact that the show started with Diana singing the same song with the same choir.

I have never had this much wank delivered straight to my friends list before, certainly not within a 24 hour period. Thus, my first post here.

Jesus Christ in a nun's habit and riding a saddle-less bicycle!

What the hell is the deal with two substandard karaoke singers? How can you get worked up over two women who equally sucked arse on the final show?

It's not like either of them will have a freaking career in 2 year's time.

That expression is a thing of beauty.

heheh i dont care what anyone says, i think it was funny, who cares about being mature, its the god damn internet lol

See, this is where i'm glad Fantasia whoever she is won over Diana whoever she is. Those fans don't deserve to be happy.

Also, Fantasia has tattoes. Can't win without tattoes. Tattoes are teh win.

if you're referring to the fac that she's not "an acne free white teenager"...well, neither was ruben, and people didn't seem to be too upset about that.

Er...has she ever met any Clay fans?

Rabid fans are such a turn off. Both of the girls were fantastic. Think about it... 16 and 19 year olds beating other wannabes. That's pretty fantastic. It's just so happen that Fantasia has more personality and also people can relate to her more because of the hardships that she had endured and overcomed.

hey... it isn't easy being a mother, what more a single mother at the age of 19. I take my hats off to the woman, that's all and I think that the insults were childish and totally uncalled for. *shrug*

I agree. :D
Gee, if the basis of becoming an American Idol involves being tattoo-less, baby-less and piercings free, guess I'm screwed. /has all three.

This just struck me as funny:
Diana must not have had many life experiences to climb mountains, etc. at the age of 16, but surely Fantasia's extra three years have afforded her that
I just had an image of Diana hooked to one of those safety harnesses, dangling from a sheer cliff.

Exactly. All this talk about her being immoral because she had a baby at 17 is absolutely stupid. It took a lot of guts for her to raise her kid and to fight to give her baby a better life. That woman is God sent IMO.

and yes... I'm a Barrino fan :D

As for the comment... bah. I get stupid just reading that. *makes face*

Asked about those who might be critical of her single parenthood, Barrino replied: "I feel like a good mom. I'm a strong woman now. ... Don't look down on me. Pray for me because I'm trying."

Two thumbs up to Fantasha for wanting a better life for her daughter and taking responsibility at such a young age.*claps*

I actually like Fantasia (but no more than Diana). The thing that nits me is about how the judges constantly tell everyone that "this is a pop competition, blah blah", and I certainly wouldn't call Fantasia a pop singer (or for that matter, Ruben). I guess this is just my opinion on musical style (not that I'd really know precisely what defines "pop" , I'm more of a folkie) It still boggles my mind, it does!

Anyway, my sister totally brought the wank last night, just going on and on about how "FANTASIA TOTALLY DIDN'T DESERVE TO WIN OMG" and how everything was unfair, rigged, etc. She still hated Diana, but haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaated Fantasia for no explicable reason. I knew this decision would piss a lot of people off, but can you imagine if it had gone the other way around? o_O

I was kinda hoping it would be the other way around because I wanted to see people go into hysterics about how Fantasia was robbed and it must be rigged and it's all clearly racist and the biggest travesty ever OMG and on and on...*sniff* It would've been beautiful (I didn't particularly care for either of them so all I cared about in the finale aftermath was how to end up with maximum melodrama).

Geez, why not slap a big red "A" on her chest while you're at it?

Disclaimer: I've only seen part of, like, one episode this season. By coinkydink, it happened to be an episode where Fantasia did a very nice, elegant, tasteful version of a Willie Nelson song. I've been singing in choirs since the Reagan administration and taking voice lessons since Bush Sr., and I thought she sounded swell. My two cents.

Should I feel evil for mocking the girls who are *crying* because their reality show contestant lost? Oh, sorry, not even lost--*came in second!* Second out of thousands of people, even. I didn't really like Fantasia, but Diana bored me even more. I tuned out after Latoya was out, myself, so can't comment on the performances.

Well, I guess they do have a point--I mean, look at how the second-place winner last year faded so fast, and the winner is famous and beloved by all. Oh, wait...

Indeed. I know my family's reaction was "Ruben? What the hell isn't Clay singing? And OMG has Ruben gained weight?!"

I think they should just declare Clay the winner after all. He did sell three times as many records as Ruben.

Clay's songs may not always have the best lyrics, but from what I've heard of Ruben... "Sorry 2004" is kinda pointless, and that "What If" song he did on the show last night had a couple lines that made me go WTF?

-"You know I love you like I used to love cake."
-"I still stay with my mama, so there's no makin' love"

OMGWTFBBQ?!

I had never heard "What If" until Ruben sang it at the finale and all I could do was stare in disbelief.

"He didn't really say 'used to love cake,' did he? Please tell me he didn't say that. Maybe he said 'used to love Fake.' Maybe he's secretly into yaoi manga. Please let that be it."

You can dream, but the way Fake is pronounced doesn't rhyme with cake. Sorry. *eg*

I think it was the "used to" part that got to me as well as the sheer stupidity of the line.

If I was the American Idol and the company said "We want you to sing this crappy song." I would say "Fuck you, biatch." and leave it at that.

Maybe it doesn't actually rhyme... but he could be one of those fangirlsboys who doesn't really know much about Japanese language. You know, he pronounces "manga" like "mango" with an a, etc. So he just sings it that way.

That poser! He's not a real otaku! He can't be the American Idol!!!!111fiftythree.

Hmmmmmm, that would perpetuate all those rumors about Clay, perhaps. And also make it easier for them to market a "From Clay to Ruben" movie.

...Well, I would go see it. I think. As long as they didn't actually get naked.

Not only crying - I read a thread on one forum where people had posted Wednesday afternoon, saying they'd cried themselves to sleep Tuesday night, were still unable to stop crying, and praying that Diana would win.

...

Now, I'm a Christian. I'm a big advocate of prayer. But somehow, I don't think God's grand plans for mankind really depend on who wins a freaking talent competition.

Ditto. Though I liked George too. The top four would have been so much more interesting if Jasmine had gone instead of him. Well, my top four would have been Jennifer, George, Latoya, and Fantasia, but oh well. At least one of them won, and I like Fantasia's personality. :)

Werd. I would have followed these last weeks much more intently if the possibility existed for George to bounce about cheerily in a professional capacity.

*nods and agrees*

My one contribution to the community (aside from pointing out the obvious errors in some people's logic) during this whole thing was to note that I'd have been much more interested if the finale was the performances outside the theater during the pre-show. ;)

Man, just seeing George again made me grin. He's so infectiously cheerful.

Man, insanity. Too bad Journalfen was down when I went looking through that comm.

I got to deal with wank in my own home! My mama started crying when Fantasia won, then went on a rant about how she had OMG NO TALENT.

Have I mentioned I hate this show?

I have no idea why I watch it. I don't like pop music, and I don't have the right mentality, apparently - when my favorite is cut and the people I dislike are safe, my reaction has always been basically "Hmm, that sucked. Now, off to RP some fictional characters."
