those Death Eaters really bring the noise
Random rant about insane Death Eater fans who take it all too seriously draws (what else?) said fans. Because, you know, it's all about them. Even when it's not. Even when the OP hasn't even heard of them. (Big Name Death Eaters?)

One of these offended personages goes over to her own journal and accuses the original random ranter of being a...horrors...Gryffindor!!!111!!!

Bitch, please. I just don't have enough words for what's wrong with that. This would be why I read f_w, write my little fics, but otherwise avoid fandom like the fucking plague.

You might want to link to the whole post, there. You missed the part where the OP responds to a reasoned, courteous disagreement with "Oh yeah? Well, I was IMing with a friend and she says everyone who disagrees with me is a WANKER! See? Here's the transcript!"

Comparisons to Hitler, Pol Pot and Iraqui prisons about, Jurisimprudence laws are broken by the truckload, the dark wings of Snacky's Law beat in the darkness, and it's all okay because the OP isn't a writer and therefore can't be expected to respond to arguments in a more polite and sophisticated manner than "Oh yeah? Well, you're just like Hitler so neener!"

Yeah, I saw that and while I agree with some of what the OP said, her credibility flew right out the window when she compared liking Tom Riddle with sympathizing with Hitler. *eyeroll*

Personally, I don't really get the fanatacism that abounds in HP fandom about what house you 'belong in.' Dude, people aren't just *sorted into categories* in real life. Yeah, sure, those 'sorting quizzes' are fun, but nothing to start a flame war over.

Sorry but I think the answer to this one is definitely a resounding YES...and what is more it is even more wanky if you take it all so seriously!

I think I must have missed something here as in all the interviews I have seen quoted and on TV (let's face it you can't exactly miss it completely) I don't remember JK Rowling ever being as obsessed by her stories as some of her fans seem to be and I certainly don't recall her ever ranting about 'Occult traditions'!

I have no issue with people trying to find reasons to identify with the villains, as long as they pick the correct villains.

If you like Riddle/Voldemort, more power to ya, but the Death Eaters?

All the DE but the ones who went to prison were out because the renounced their master, and only when he returned and threatened their death did they join up with him again, if you are after a villain to admire find one who is at least an actual villain...

I thought I saved, and apparently I didn't and am now kicking myself in the ass, a later comment by the OP consisting of a truly bizarre apology in which she seemed to be saying that although she knows the difference between fantasy and reality she draws no distinction between them, and forgets that other people do. Does anyone have that saved? Because that was some bizarre shit, right there.

Now, I can see that some people would complain about DE fics as being...out of character, maybe. If JKR wrote a certain character to have absolutely no redeeming qualities whatsoever, then giving them such qualities would be anti-canon. But if that were the case...personally, I'd rather write the character as interesting and not care if it was IC or not, because a villain that is absolute evil with no humanistic characteristics is just kind of boring.

Not that I'm an HP fan anymore anyway ^^;;

Too bad the OP was such a wanker, because there was probably a good point in there somewhere. I know in my fandom there's a feeling that you can either like the heroes or the villains but not both, and you have to excuse anything your side does and condemn the other. Hey, some of us just want to enjoy the characters as *characters* without choosing sides, 'kay? XP

Playing Devil's Advocate here. As a villain fan, no less. *passes around splooge-guarding helmets for everyone*

Granted, the OP was wanky as all hell (MY FREIND SED U SUXXOR!!!), but they did have a point. Seeing rabid DE fans go "But they're not really evil!" makes me wish I had MalletSpace. They torture people for fun. They kill people for fun. They let loose a giant fucking lizard to go terrorize a school and kill off anyone they don't like. They trick little First Years into becoming human sacrifices while they're at it. They enjoy being totalitarian pricks, and devote their life and energy to killing off everyone whom they don't perceive worthy of practicing magic. And I hate seeing such vile acts defended by calling them one big misunderstanding.

I'm a sucker for tragic villains myself, but there's certainly a line to be drawn between "I think these are interesting characters even though they do bad things" and "They're not evil! They're just misunderstood!" The DEs are not misunderstood in any context. They are evil in every sense of the word. There may be a handful who were misled by a charismatic lunatic on a power trip, but so far I've read nothing to suggest names or identities of such, other than Snape. The rest of the DEs we've met by name know exactly what they're doing, and they enjoy every minute of it.

Thus, I can't feel any sympathy for Tom Riddle. His father may have been a prejudiced prick, but it certainly doesn't excuse his wanting to kill every Muggle and half-blood in existence. Just like Draco's lousy parents don't excuse his behavior, either. He's a petty, snotfaced brat. And crazed DE/Voldemort/Draco fans whining "But you don't understaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand hiiiiiiiiiim!!!11oneeleven!" really, really piss me off.

The same thing applies to the Gryffindor fanatics who think the "good guys" are right all the time, and fail to acknowledge how bloody stupid Harry and Co. have been in quite a few instances. But at least they have the excuse of not being able to see past "Gryffindor = brave and courageous and therefore must be good." But the rabid DE fans who insist Lucius Malfoy isn't really bad and that Voldemort just needs "sum1 2 luv him!!111" make me wonder if they're reading the same books I am.

I believe this is what the OP was ranting about (from what I gathered in the comments both here and on the OP): being a fan of the villains is all fine and good, even sympathizing a little if they happen to be tragic, provided you're in touch with reality enough to realize that they're still...yanno...evil. But to go around raving that Obviously Evil People like Voldemort and Lucius Malfoy are just tortured, misunderstood souls who can reform by sitting around a campfire singing "Kumbaiya" (or fucking Student of Choice after a romantic dinner for two) is just a little off the deep end. Those are the crazy fans who make the rest of us who like villain characters look stupid.

I mean, can't we appreciate complex, evil characters because they're interesting? Just like we appreciate porn because it's two (or more) people fucking?

I'm thinking the OP didn't intend her small rant to turn into major F_W fodder. More than anything, I'm getting the impression she is completely bewildered by the whole thing - I would assume it's like posting your shopping list online and having someone being offended by "steak" on the list or something - it's her opinion, one which people who enjoy the odd trolling don't agree with.

I would chalk this one up not to cassidyblue but those who invaded her LJ and made a small post into a OMG WTF?!!!!!@!???CHEESE#@*#(???!!!! moment.
