Oh those whacky plagiarists!
So, the community kroenenites was created for fans of Dr. Karl Ruprecht Kroenen (from Hellboy), naturally.

Well, someone comes along and decides that they have the copyright to the name 'Kroenenite'.

And I quote: The Kroenenite character belongs to me and as of now this group's name stands in the face of plagiarism, as it is my creation and my creation alone.

And someone comes along to burst the guy's bubble, too.

Time to call an internet laywer!

Edit: Changed post slightly to properly identify Kroenen.

Who or what is a Kroenen?

Dr. Karl Ruprecht Kroenen, from the Hellboy comments. It's a fan community based on him. Or was. Until this asshat came in and claimed he has said name copyrighted.

*coughbullshitcough*

You cannot copyright a name. You can trademark a name, but you cannot copyright it, and the asshat doesn't have it trademarked because he would have posted that. The community owner is showing graciousness in changing the name without a fuss, but s/he does not have to.

*telophase resists the temptation to go in and flame the asshat to a nice even crispness*

"OMG! Like! I so thought of that character derived name before you did and I am teh ONLY one who can use it and u guys so suck because I thought of it first and can prove it!!!111!"

That's quite amusing and yet so terribly lame. Now let us all point and laugh.

Looks like some people just don't like the wank as much as we do.

I would lay the smackdown while this person would rather back down. Hey, different strokes for different folks.

I cannot BELIEVE the wussness that flows from that guy. For starters, s/he is a moderator--where the hells does he (fine, I'll use he) get off whining about how he doesn't want drama? "Oh, I don't want DRAMA. Drama would hurt me and my friends list and give me leprosy and rape my cat and pee in my Wheaties."

I especially like the line "I have found that people that stupid tend to drone on and on about what they believe to be them being in the Right, and no amount of logic and/or mocking will change their mind."

Because apparently, no amount of people telling this guy he's a cringing little polyp will change HIS mind either.

Guh! Why are there so many people who don't know the difference between copyrights and trademarks?

(Reply to this)(Thread)

[info]telophase
2004-05-29 08:00 am UTC (link)
For the same reason that there are so many people who think (a) that you still have to register a copyright for it to be activated, (b) that mailing yourself a copy of your work to supply a dated postmark will prove anything in court (c) that if they submit their work to a publisher that the publisher will steal their ideas unless they threaten them in the cover letter, and (d) that since they're not making any money from something, copyright doesn't apply to them. Basically, people get their legal advice from each other instead of people who actually know the law, and therefore it's a giant game of Telephone where what comes out at the end of the string of transmission is completely garbled from what went in at the beginning.

And, oh yeah, (e) for the same reason that professors think their status as educators means that anything they do involving images is therefore educational use and they don't have to get permission to copy slides, i.e., they're prima donnas who think that the rules don't apply to them. [[info]telophase had to bash a few heads on that one at her last job.]

I was the slide curator for the College of Architecture at Texas A&M. :) (I think my name may still be on their website, which has obviously not been updated in the two years since I left for grad school.) I managed the collection of art history and architecture slides. It was fun (excpet for the co-worker from HELL that last three years) and the occasional academic prima donna.

Oh, and excpet for the grad students who assumed that staff = non-degreed = stupid, and therefore paid me no attention when I told them they were doing everything wrong. I had one student working for a professor who literally would not believe me when I said that the slides of a building in Venice labeled "Doge's Palace" and "Duke's Palace" were of the same building UNTIL I told him I had a master's degree in anthropology and museum studies. DESPITE me telling him that I took Italian as an undergrad. Apparently in his brain, an undergrad degree with three years of Italian meant I was not to be trusted with the translation of "Doge" but a masters degree in anthropology and museum studies with no reference to Italian whatsoever meant I could translate Italian with ease. Aaaaaaaaaargh!

And then the EEEEEVIL COWORKER who was all pissed off that the website listed out our degrees, because she said that they shouldn't matter. Well, yeah, duh, they don't necessarily mean anything than you passed a standard rite of passage, BUT she's working for an organization that DEPENDS on producing people with degrees and she's surprised that they consider them important? Give me a break!

Rant over. Getting to do research on the art and architecture to catalog the slides was fun, and most of the people were nice most of the time.

I must now admit my utter cluelessness in regards to recent anime series and ask the inevitable...

That character in your icon? Who is he? I've seen him around a couple of times, mostly in icons, but I never figured out which anime he comes from.

Actually, I think it would be MUCH easier to dash off a quick "Fuck Off Thx" post and ban the offending arsewad from posting in the comm. LiveJournal makes that very, very simple.

SO simple, in fact, that I can't think of a damn reason why it would be less trouble than moving and entire comm. I mean, giving in to that crap defies ALL reason.

I'm not sure which makes me sigh and shake my head sadly for the state of the internet more - the guy who's claiming that he has ownership of a name derived from someone else's name, or the one who's willing to just give in to his ridiculous assertion.
