Qanonreip is in the eye of the beholder, or something.
In hpart, artimusdin posts Snape/Harry artwork (it's rated PG at worst, don't worry).

People make the usual "I lurve it!!oneBBQ11!" comments, until:

Saeva nitpicks a couple of things, like Harry's brown hair and Snape's "Asian" features.

Bring on the wank:

Constructive criticism means "only saying nice things"

Please disguise your criticism by sticking it at the end of a very long list of nice comments

You do realize that a professor would say worse things at art school, right?

Saeva then comments about it in her own journal and at hp_essays.

Artwank. Gotta love it.

I like how the snarky reviewer nit-picks on the stupidest shit, like not conforming in EVERY DETAIL to canon and then fails to con-crit important things, like, you know - body structure and such. Because, damn, there ARE some issues with that picture as far as that goes - not big ones, but worth commenting on. However, the alleged asian-ness of Snape is definitely not worth commenting on.

"His eyes look Asian!"

...That's nice. Now, quick, put the little mouse on the wheel so that gears in your brain turn and finish up that thought. And the logical conclusion is...perhaps his eyes are a little bit too small. Which could be said in a nice, non-wanky manner and then everyone would be happy.

And, for the record, on the hair-wank - two characters with the exact same color hair in a picture tends to look weird, so lightening Harry's hair is not exactly a horrible sin beyond all measure.

I have an issue with snark regarding fanart. Mostly because book fanart is highly individual. The way Snape looks to me when I imagine him while reading would is NOT the same way most people imagine him. Hell, if I ever made fanart of Snape I would get shot down in an instant.

But then again, I have problems with abstract thinking, so I rely on fanart to tell me how things look a lot of the time.

Why does this saeva sound so familiar? She was involved in another wank not too far back, wasn't she?

The thing that really gets me is the "Asian-ness" of Snape's eyes in the work. It looks to me more like the artist was using a photo of Alan Rickman as Snape to draw from. For instance, the shot of him on this poster (http://images.art.com/images/products/regular/10091000/10091065.jpg) has a similar look in the eye area as artimusdin's piece. I don't know - maybe A.R. just has Asian-looking eyes?

But why did I feel the need to just type that all out? The point is: NONE OF IT MATTERS! Those nitpicky details pointed out by saeva are not major deviations from canon at all. (I mean, glasses from the wrong year? Come on, that is fuckin' petty.)

Quite a busy week for Saeva.

She also posted to [info]hp_essays on Brit-picking not being all that important, as "HP books [aren't] "British" in the same sense that those who are Brit-picking are British." Some agreed, but many people promptly pulled her argument apart, and after repeatedly editing the post to 'clarify' things, she deleted it. Because people made her look really stupid So that she could revise and clarify her essay.

The glasses could just be a matter of angle, anyway. They could be large, black-framed glasses, which have been around forever.

And this is relevant why?

Um, dunno. Don't think it is.

Just a thought... It's phenominally rare for a caucasian to have actually, totally black hair. "Black" is generally a dark brown. My sister's hair could be described as black, until you get close and see all the caramel highlights that nature put there all by herself. So Harry's "black" hair is actually a product of rather lazy writing. "A dark enough brown as to appear black" is a bit clumsy though, I suppose

Ladies and gentlemen, the reason why I never ever would touch the HP fandom with a ten foot pole! I lurk at these places because the wank, oh my, the wank. While Saeva in herself is wanky, the people responding are equally wanky.

As a person, it is in my nature to concrit things. It's just my first reaction. I see what's good, but I also see what needs to be improved - it stems from what I expect of myself and my art. Incidentally, it is incredibly hard for me to take part in fan communities because OMG NO ON LIEKS CONCRIT!!11!! I try not to be an ass about it, and I'm nowhere near as nitpicky, but I hate the "You're my friend so I'll tell you it's good!" school of thinking. Me and my friends crit our art all the time. I trust crit from my friends more than anything else. Incidentally, we've improved an incredible amount. No one is a perfect artist, and one's skill as an artist does not reflect who you are as a person. Cheezus.

So yeah. The HP fandom is art wanky. As long as it there are two oddly-drawn men having awkwardly-composed gay sex everyone OMG LOVES IT!!11! Halogirl8, for example, is a BNF in the HP fandom for her art, which...uh...I've always thought was rather horrid, to be honest. However, that's my preference and I'm not gonna go and post on all the lists that I've never liked it...the HP fans would beat me with large sticks. I will say, though, that it has always seemed so appropriate to me that she jumps to the defense of all artists in the HP fandom and is the self-proclaimed protector of anyone who might disagree. She's so damn set on never hearing concirt and protecting the world from it. VIVA LA BAD ARTISTS! Stick together, ya crazy kids, and keep churnin' out sludge!

The earring also makes me wonder, because back then it was still a symbol of being gay -- is Harry doing that on purpose? If so, that's an interesting touch, though I wonder how in-character that would be for Harry.

Yes. They are gay/bisexual. However, the earring is there mainly as a way for Snape to say "He is mine!", since he is/would be a rather possessive bastard.

Is it strange to anyone else that this went unchallenged? I mean, I'm all for slash, but I think I missed the part with canon-Snape'sBitch!Harry. But then, I never got all the way though book 5.

As for con-crit... no man, not even Snape, is gray. He is canonically described as sallow. Think "Liver disfunction yellow" not "dead for a fortnight green."

Other things bug me, but I've ceased to care.
