Potter Wank! Yay!!
Harry and Ron Normally a quiet little community, but not today.

Even though [info]hedwig_the_owl hasn't seen Prisoner of Azkaban she's flaming flipping mad. Why you ask? Because apparently Ron is goofy and never gets to display his intellegence, while Hermione is the smart one and she gets all the good lines. And that's soooo not canon.

So sign her petition and save PoA! Or whatever. (Because JK Rowling totally has nothing to do with how the scripts are written and she so didn't okay this supposed depatrure from canon or whatever.)

I love when fans call other fans to arms and go to war by signing a petition. Because, petitions are incredibly effective, as we all know.

Naturally, this one will persuade Warner Bros. to hold back all the copies of PoA, command Cauron to reshoot the Ron scenes, have them re-edited, and then re-developed, right?

The thing that bothers me is that the characters as they're portrayed are really not that far from canon. Hermione is an annoying know-it-all and Ron is a goof. That's not all there is to them, but I think that since the movies are staying geared towards kids, it's very difficult to show the complexity of the characters as well as you could in a book. (Especially since you only have about two hours to do so.)

Oh, and if we're signing petitions, can we please sign one to edit that stupid applause-scene at the end of the last movie? I mean that should do it, right? We're still able to save it, right? Surely, Warner Bros will withdraw all their copies when they see the error of their ways? Right? Riiight?

This is a major line for Ron in the book series - a defining moment for his character as he shows why he was Sorted into Gryffindor. (For god's sake, he's standing up on a broken leg to protect Harry, here!)

Really? Cause here I thought it was just a small aside, I figured the whole facing down of Sirius Black was more important.

I wonder what will happen when movie four is out and Ron *GASP* acts like a jerk to both Harry and Hermione!

Then again, if the original cast is replaced for the 5th movie, that will be total armageddon.

Ron standing up, broken leg and all, to protect Harry is kind of important. Picture Samwise standing up for Frodo at any point being taken out of LOTR, and instead he whines in the corner while Arwen kicks serious ass.

They are just turning him into a sidekick which is not fair to Ron's character or to the spirit of the books.

Sometimes I wonder if there isn't more than one version of the Potter books out there, because some of these fangirls seem to have read slightly skewed, bizarro parallel universe editions in which things are eerily familar, and yet, at the same time, spine-chillingly strange. Like if you got up in the morning and daisies were green and the ocean rocked the other way, and Ron was suddenly not Harry's sidekick. Because in my versions, Ron is more sidekick than Robin is. He screams sidekick. He has a badge that says "sidekick". He even has moody little "I don't wanna be your sidekick" sidekick tantrums, like all good sidekicks do.

Ron is more sidekick than Robin is.

All this did was make me picture Ron in the original Robin suit, with the short shorts and the little elf-boots.

No one will ever persuade me that Bats didn't have an ulterior motive in designing that suit.

No wonder most of the fans who only got into it via the movies are Ron-haters - they only see the comic relief boy and not the loyal, strong Ron of the series.

What about those Ron-haters who came to this conclusion after reading the books? I know, it must be some manic, enraged Ron-hating editor who gave all the good lines to Hermione. Or maybe even JKR herself! The bitch, she doesn't even know the 'true Ron.'

Canon Rape for the masses
[info]wankprophet
2004-05-31 02:34 am UTC (link)
Those of you who have been paying attention to fandoms lately may have noticed a certain pervasive dynamic known as "canon rape." Forget squeeing fangirl sex dreams and provocative essays on the symbolism of Spock's pointy ears -- canon rape is the latest and hottest new thing among BNF's and the hipsters in virtually every fandom around. Those who don't hop on the bandwagon will be left behind in the dust of screencaps and unsatisfactory masturbation fantasies.

"But," you may ask, "how do I latch onto that star, Mr Prophet?"

I'm glad you asked, because today I'm giving a free, no-strings-attached lesson on how to perform good canon rape. Be the envy of your mailing list and the lustbunny of the most discerning BNFs as you leave Captain Kirk whimpering for Tribble cock and Buffy the Vampire Slayer giving birth to Spike after being impregnated by Willow. Pay attention, though, cause I'm only gonna do this once.

How to Rape Canon Without Even Trying

Tactic #1: Change the physical characteristics of everyone's favorite heroes and villians

We all have our own ideas about what the characters look like, whether from the descriptions in the books or the physiology of the actors. If you want to rape canon, you need to fuck with the popular and/or verifiable images. Notice, for instance, how both Tolkien and Peter Jackson raped canon with Gandalf. In "Fellowship of the Ring," Gandalf had hair and robes approximately the colour of old dishwater. He is even referred to as "Gandalf the Grey." Not "Gandalf the Nonspecific Tint" or "Gandalf, Walking Advertisement for L'oreal." Yet in "The Two Towers," Gandalf comes back with pure white hair and clothes. Keep in mind, relatively little time has passed, so it's unlikely to be a natural change. Not does the specific medieval-ish milieu of the Middle-Earth seem hospitable to such innovations as Chlorox and hydrogen peroxide. This is clear canon rape, and an example of the power of tinkering with canon characters' appearances. Or one could tinker with age. Angel and Spike, from the Buffyverse, are supposedly immortal, eternally young vampires. Yet if one looks closely, one notices that after 7 years or so, both are clearly growing older in a way that even the three feet of pancake make-up can't completely disguise. Ditto Mr. Spock, who supposedly, as a Vulcan, has a much longer life-span than humans, yet in the space of a few short years from the original series to the latest movies, has aged like ferret with Methuselah syndrome. And the beautiful thing about it is that Nobody. Else. On. The. Ship. Seems. To. Notice. The same goes for the humans surrounding Angel and Spike. This is canon rape on a level that leaves one befuddled with reverential awe. Pulling off tricks like these is the ultimate canon rape, and something we all should aspire to.

So have at it. If everyone else thinks Draco has a pointy rat-like face just because J.K. Rowling says so in the books, give him a romanesque nose and full, voluptuous lips. Don't let the fact that he's 14 or so deter you -- give him a dick the size of an irradiated cucumber. Make Harry's hair brown, a public service canon rape to honour the millions of brunettes who love the series. Remember, Snape could very well be descended from your favorite anime character, so screw with those eyes, and make a statement. If you aren't satisfied with Fred's cup size, make her buxom...if she was real, she might even thank you for raping her canon. If you think Scully is a tad curvy, give her long, muscular legs. Ford Prefect, being a native of a planet near Belelgeuse, must be white...so canon rape him and make him black. The screams of horror will be sweet music to your ears. And there can be no excuse for not canon-raping every single American Idol contestant...after all, subconscious canon rape is how Clay got thousands of women wanting to sleep with him.

In particular the "wears jeans" part.

Um, wankiness aside, I think you would have to be blind not to see that Ron has been severely watered down in the films to be the goofy comic relief, while Hermione has turned into superwoman and Harry's equal in every way. *Pause to vomit*

Someone above said that the broken leg was a sideline, um...no. Ron, broken leg and all, stands up and says to Sirius that in order to kill Harry he will have to "KILL ALL THREE OF US". Kind of an important character moment ya know?

That said, petitions are stupid, and it's just a movie adaptation. It's not going to change the course of Ron's character in the upcoming books.

Eh, they are sort of right. Well, someone needs to sit them down and gently explain to them that yes, Ron is a sidekick, we're sure he's a nice sidekick, dear, but still a sidekick.
But the films do consistently give Ron's stuff to Hermione to fulfil the format of Hero, Cool Chick, and Extras.
