And what really boggles me is, why hermaphrodites? Has she just not listened to the first two albums? If casual sex and hermaphrodites offend her, she's gonna be in for a shock the first time she listens to Heirate Mich. Or Spiel Mit Mir. Or... virtually anything that's not on Mutter.

Actually, the lyrics are really, excruciatingly badly translated - the translation of Du hast really had me rolling my eyes. And some of them feel like the person started and couldn't be bothered to finish because OMG I don't know that word!!!11111!11! So I doubt a professional translator had anything to do with the translations, they look really amateur to me.

Still, those songs are pretty lame in comparison with some of the others, like Spiel mit mir. Some of the comments (about Rammstein making fun of hermaphrodites or the comment about their hearts not beating left) in the thread show a complete lack of understanding of the band and of the German cultural context - unsurprising, though, considering the language barrier and the bad translations.

Even with the crappy translations, even when I was a little teenygoth who didn't speak a word of German, even though I frequently miss nonliteral meanings... the point of songs like "Rein Raus" and "Zwitter" was always perfectly clear to me. You don't really need a professional translation or German cultural context to understand the lyrics, you just need a brain, and perhaps more than a cursory glance at the lyrics. No idea where the hell she's getting this egocentrism she keeps blabbering about.

And you're mostly right about the translations. Jeremy, the eternally wanky webmaster of Herzeleid.com, was just doing them for shits and giggles when he made the site, but now he's been hired by Rammstein's management to run the official site. God help us.

I didn't mean the ones at Herzeleid.com. I haven't seen those and I have no problems with fan translations, more power too him. I meant the ones on the CDs *themselves*, that someone ostensibly paid for. Those are atrocious, especially since whoever did them tried to be "poetic" and didn't bring across what was actually being said in some of the songs.

And it's true, with most of the songs you get the general gist. The translation of Du hast on the CD really gets on my nerves.

*open mouth, insert two cents* I don't actually think those ones suck.. too literal, sometimes, but they're at least thorough.

As for our OP: I particularly love how she took that line about the elephant in the eye of the needle as egotism, not.. yanno.. a metaphor. Because there aren't any other metaphors in that song, not at all.

	Oh, god, those. headdesk I thought you were referring to the general clunkiness of Jeremy's translations, but the 'poetic' versions are so much worse. Granted, the English version of Engel has some decent lines, but they're not translations. I think I've blocked the English version of 'Du Hast' from my memory to spare myself the trauma.
