Mmm. Virginwankage. Disclaimer, begging, and such.

Spacecast is the messageboard for Space, the Canadian Science Fiction TV network.

Angel ended, and there was a brief outpouring of grief.

All goes swimmingly, possibly a bit wordy, with occasional dissent as to whether or not the final episode was good or not.

The first salvo is fired on page nine. Da Bear complains about all the chatter, over what was, essentially, a TV show. A cute fight breaks out with spotthecat. Blah blah, two pages.

And now. The wahnkeh.

Zaphod B posts a report from an academic Buffy conference at the very bottom of page 12. Da Bear then pipes up on the next page "Did people actually pay money to sit and hear this stuff? Oh some people are so silly." Thus, in one swell foop, s/he offends every Jossademic in the universe.

Oh, and it just gets worse from there. A few perceptions are corrected, mostly politely.

This kind of conference just sounds absurd to me. A bunch of pseudo intellectuals pontificating their personal opinions, and questionable speculations just seems to me to be one of the highest forms of complete bullsh!t I can think of.

spotthecat gets really offended. CMOTDibbler starts insulting North Albertians. (Albertans?) Spooge for seven pages.

Warning: Messageboard is insanely messy with giant banners, and endless threaded quotes. In other words, watch your connection speed.

So, have we learned anything today, boys and girls?

As a disciple of Dr. Matthew Pateman, who is publishing a book about Buffy, I have no comment. :P

Academic Buffy conference?

Okay... fandom really does come in all shapes and bizarre sizes...

One of my professors (visiting PhD from England) this term gave an entire academic lecture on Buffy. It was quite good, actually. :)

And suddenly, the tiny little part of my brain that wants to write on castration mythology in Buffy goes "poingity!"

Well, there was a paper that came out of the Center for Strategic and International Studies called "Biological Warfare and the Buffy Paradigm." I'm serious. Written by Anthony H. Cordesman, it uses BtVS as a paradigm for how America should deal with potential biological terrorist attacks. It's available here about a third of a way down the page between "The New American Approach to Defense: The FY2003 Program" and "Iraq’s Military Capabilities: Fighting A Wounded, But Dangerous, Poisonous Snake".

I don't cite this source to start a political debate but as one of the potentially weirdest uses of Buffy that I've ever seen.

CMOTDibbler starts insulting North Albertians.

He's an imposter! The real C.M.O.T Dibbler would be wandering around the wank-fight, selling kleenex patented spooge wipers for $1 a piece.

"Spooge-wipers-inna-bun! Get your spoo- ... Wait, ewww, that's not what I meant."

Hee! And they wouldn't be GOOD spooge-wipers, either. "Hey! This tore right in half!"

"Spooge-wipers-inna-bun! Get your spoo- ... Wait, ewww, that's not what I meant."

Auuuugh images.

That makes me want to wander in with a Vimes SN and tell them they're all under arest. Or possibly at Vetinari, just to mock them.

Discworld rocks my socks like nothing else.

I'll admit it.

I'm from Northern Alberta. (Well, kinda.)

Don't worry spot, Bear comes from northern Alberta, he probably thinks that the only academic conferences worth attending are those that involve monster trucks and cowboy hats.

He forgot the beer. Without beer, there is no academic conference!

Damn straight. You go, you spend the day tearing each others' ideas apart and trying not to step on the gaggle of undergrads some professor brought (read; my professor brought), and then you go have a few cold ones afterwards and laugh it up.

Okay, or I would, if I was old enough to drink, and liked beer. But hey.

You know, replace that with wine, and it sounds just like every academic conference I've ever been to.
For that matter:
This kind of conference just sounds absurd to me. A bunch of pseudo intellectuals pontificating their personal opinions, and questionable speculations just seems to me to be one of the highest forms of complete bullsh!t I can think of.
Take out the "pseudo" part (in most cases), and that sounds a hell of a lot like every academic conference I've ever been to, as well.

Jossademic? The academic study of pop culture is fascinating but that's a preciously retarded nickname. Do they actually use it seriously?

Old Will didn't pack his plays with pop-culture references.

Bzuh? Have we been reading the same Shakespeare? I mean bitch, please. Shakespeare wrote for the guys in the cheap seats, that's about all there is to it.

spaceguy: They just decided to utilize their skills and deconstruct a wonderful richly layered, witty, and provocative television show.

Maybe a monkey could do the same. I guess the point is that this group took the time to do it first, instead of those monkeys.

HA! They beat you this time, monkeys! Buffy intellectuals: 1. Monkeys: 0.

Between this and another list I'm on, I've snorted Coke up my nose several times and now my poor old nose is burned out. ;) ;)

It's Albertans. But Albertians is friggin' hilarious and considering the way they behave, Albertians might just be more applicable because someimes I have to wonder if Alberta is indeed part of Canada.

On a board like Spacecast, I should think that Canadians would be better served to spend more of their time apologizing for the existence of "The Starlost" than arguiung about Buffy academia.
