Who needs popularity?
I think [info]resmiranda tagged this thread the right way. It does have that amusing self-masturbation feel to it.

On a quasi-related note, why do people post their stories to FAP if they don't care about popularity? Why do they link their stories in their sigs? Why do they mention them?

[eta] Hmmm, I don't think my questions come off the right way. I'm not suggesting that fic writers set out with the express goal of becoming popular. I guess I'm asking the questions in relation to those that do go on about not wanting popularity and *gasp* plebes reading their fics.

Heh, yeah, FAP...is something else entirely. I can't even begin to classify it. There is this whole dichotomy between "I want to be a BNF!" and "Well, I write for me, dammit! It's not necessary to become popular! Though it would be nice..."

They have a whole thread where you can recommend other fics, and hilariously, pimp your own.

Actually, it's not just a thread. It's a whole damn forum. Gotta love it.

It all depends on whtehr you actually believe people when they say they don't want to be popular, really. I don't, as a general rule. Considering the last time Rochelle (it *was* her) had her wank reported - she sure seemed to care that she'd lost her self-proclaimed popularity back then...

I always suspect these threads are more about wanting people to reassure them that they're a fantastic writer and more popular than they think. But then, I'm a cynical bitch.

And the people who were asking for the link on the last thread, no can do, because a) it was reported (by me) back on blurty, if I recall and b) the thread mysteriously vanished from FAP soon after. Not that I have any idea why something like that might happen.

Oh, right there with you.

Well, that didn't take very long now, did it?

I think we have to stop calling the Harry Potter fans "Plagiarizing Pedophiles" and just start calling them "Old Faithful." Because they always bring the wank, and it's always good.

Several times daily with astonishing regularity . . . spurting, steaming geysers of wank.

O.O

Yes, I'm going to have such nice lovely disturbing dreams now.

Heh, that thread is quite amusing. I think I've seen it before. I know that Adux, who posted there, actually meant it when she said she didn't care. She likes to write some really f***ed up stuff, and she does write it for herself. She doesn't advertise everywhere, so you can't accuse her of that. Beyond that, the rest of them... yeah, I wholeheartedly agree. You can ask them their review counts on their Schnoogle fics, and they always have an up-to-the-minute count, because they're counting their reviews obsessively. All 17 of them. Some had to buy sandals so they could keep track.

I have another thread you might find funny. Take a gander at this:
http://www.fictionalley.org/fictionalleypark/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=51959
I'm sure you can find the Wank in this one.
The one who whined: "Oh... might I ask you what is special about the number of reviews you receive? Generally I judge a fic on its quality rather than the number of reviews it gets. Just a thought." She only had about 6 reviews on over 4 chapters of her Schnoogle fic at the time of that post.

There's another thread there now:
http://www.fictionalley.org/fictionalleypark/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=56647
"How many reviews is enough?" is the topic. Proof yet again that everyone needs validation, even when they deny it like mad.

I never bothered to make a pretense at not caring. I knew what I wanted, and said from the start, I wanted people to know my pen name and my fic, and it's starting to happen. It pisses me off that 99% of people on FAP plug, plug, and plug some more, but feel the need to defend themselves when nobody likes their writing, saying that they really don't care. I hang out on FAP, but I'll agree, a lot of it is pretty laughable.
