Hard Artist... he's like Mother Teresa, in a way...
A bit of a background to the wank. On Comixpedia, Matt T reviewed Hard's comic Sexy Losers. (Review found here.) To be fair, it's not the greatest review. So Hard complains about it in his LJ.

That would be fine if he left it at that, but then he had to break out with the whining about how webcomics should never be reviewed because they are FREE.

If you complain about something that is free, you're being ungratuitous. If you critize people who are essentially doing unpaid volunteer work, you're a jerk.

and later to a reply:

You're basically critiquing someone's charity or good will. If you have the bad manners to critique someone's good will, then you do not deserve to view that person's good will. The exception is when a critique is solicited by the creator.

Oh yes, because cartooning is right up there with hospital volunteering and cleaning up the environment and doing something positive for your community and... OH WAIT IT ISN'T! How about that...

*sigh* If you share your work with the public, the public is free to criticize it.

It's bad enough hearing this shit from fanfic writers, but I'd expect a webcomic artist to be more professional. Even if he's not getting paid now, it's the kind of thing that could become a paying gig somewhere down the road. And reviews, both good and bad, are stops on that road.

It's not even that bad of a review. I understand that it's hard when someone doesn't like your work, but the review made me curious to read this comic, in spite of the problems cited. Reviews can expose your work to a larger audience. Although, the more people that read it, the more likely it is that someone won't like it. Maybe it's better if this guy just keeps a small circle of devoted admirers, since he doesn't seem mature enough to deal with anything more.

I used to volunteer at the local Children's Zoo. If I missed half of the poop in the enclosure, or accidentlly mixed up the tree kangaroo and lemur diets, my supervisors would tell me. I'm sure the same thing is done at hospitals and soup kitchens. sometimes a job half done is worse than a job not done at all, because the supervisor not only has to take time to show how to do it correctly, but he/she might also have to do damage control.

Besides, I like comic reviews. I'm part of two art exchanges, so I read a lot of webcomics. And, trust me, if there was a way to tell if one was good or not, irt would save everyone a lot of time. And, hey, the reviewer isn't always right -- look at movie reviews.

I've always thought that people who want to get popular in a chosen field but don't have the skills to become popular in that field will become critics instead.

Why waste so many precious words on it? What's wrong with the good old traditional "u r jealous"?

Brb. There's a whiny charity artist with a goodwill comic at the door again.

I dunno if I agree with the reviewer or not. I do think that Sexy Losers is meaner and sicker than it used to be, though. Hard is an egotistical jerk and a misogynist (IMO), and yet I keep going back and laughing my ass off at this fucked up strip. WHY GOD WHY?

Oh, right, because I love evil humor.

Yes, because Hard doesn't request donations or anything. All charity work! Gives all money he gets to the chilluns! (The porn-industry chilluns.) Jesus. A review of something created for entartainment is just that - checking if it's entertaining.

I personally disagree with the review and love Sexy Losers, but christ Hard is like a fountain of splooge in every sense.

Don't know why he's writing, 'cause reviews are free too. Critiquers aren't being paid to review your work - hell, they weren't even asked too. They're doing it out of the goodness of their fucking hearts - just like the volunteers and convicts highway trash collectors - so you really shouldn't whine!

In all seriousness, tho, I honestly do see critiquers as doing the webcomic artists a favor. The only way a publisher's gonna notice you is if the reviews fawn over your shit. Otherwise, it's just that - shit. Only with a limited following of fecalphilliacs.

Okay... someone write this guy a reality check. Just because you do something for free doesn't automatically exempt you from criticism. If you put anything out in a public forum whether it be a piece of writing, or a drawing, it's going to be open to criticism both positive and negative and it's just something you have to deal with. Stop the whining already!

While I have to agree with the people who say that Comixpedia's writing has a tendency to be sub-par...

I actually thought that when I friended the update journal on the comic drawn by the man who've spend both Sexy Losers and Sunday Morning Coffee time to make fun about people who whine for their following on blogs, I'd be spared the long, complaining, personal entries.

Hard Artist seems confused here. He seems to think the review was done for his benefit. Wrong. Reviews are for the readers. They can decide whether they have merit or not. What is the point of being offended just because someone didn't like his jokes? Anyway, the review will probably lead to more people checking out his strip, and they can decide for themselves.

Of course, if the reviewer does hate the genre, it does make little sense for the magazine to have given that assignment to him/her.

It can't be said enough; love the comic, doesn't change the fact he's an asshole.

Plus got upset over one review that didn't even entirely bash his comic and didn't even mention art. So the review in itself was lacking...

He needs to get over himself.

I've exchanged emails with hard (as he calls himself now) a couple of times. I read SL back when it was The Thin H Line and enjoyed it for the most part. I haven't read it in the better part of a year because I didn't like the turn it was taking, but I figured, what the hell, people's interests change. He's a really great artist, and a lot of his jokes are pretty clever.

However, he takes criticism about as well as a twelve-and-a-half-year-old LOTR!Movie fanficcer who's gone off her Ritalin.

I didn't think the review was even all that harsh. Hell, I didn't think it was all that GOOD. I could have done better.

As for not having free stuff critiqued? That's pure, utter bullshit. I've been doing free art and writing for half my life and I live for feedback--good OR bad. Sure, I like praise as much as anybody creative, but how am I supposed to improve, as a writer or an artist, if people don't tell me what I'm doing wrong? Even if I don't agree with what they're telling me, I'd at least like to hear it.

I've written dozens of fanfics, produced scores of fanart images, tons of cartoon dolls and Palace avatars, and over 100 KiSS sets. Did I like every negative review I got? No. Did I hate it when people told me my stuff sucked? You bet I did. (Let's not even mention the Mexican website review that said my personal photo made me look like a "scary truck driver". I don't even know where that came from.) But there is a difference between "OMGWTFUSUX0RZBBQ!!!!111one" and "Your KiSS sets are great, but you really should use snap-to code on the smaller pieces."

So, basically, hard needs to get over himself. Or get back on his medication. Or something.

I'm reading through the threads right now.

What is up with "ungratuitous?" Shouldn't it be "ungracious?"

And what about "personally provocated?" Shouldn't that be "provoked?"

He also seems to think that Comixpedia has a personal vendetta against him, for some reason. Is it too much to think that they just didn't like his comic?

(One may argue that TV reviews are similar. Well, you don't see a lot of TV reviews, and the people who make TV shows get paid for what they do. They get PAID to entertain you. Webcomic artists do NOT.)

All I can say to that is I would have like to have been paid for (all of) the television work I have done... Although maybe he's talking about writer/directors/producers (rather than actors), since they are more likely to be paid.

Aside from that there's a hell of a lot of theatre where the people involved get no money and it still gets reviewed (sometimes by people that are paid to review it... where's the justice?)

But free or not there's nothing wrong with a review... and you'll always get some bad reviews. Who was it that said "Any publicity is better than no publicity"?

As a teacher, I know that criticism isn't called for, one gets better results out of pointing out the good points of one's endevors...

...Please tell me he's joking about being a teacher. Unless it's kindergarden or something, teachers are supposed to point out what you're doing wrong.

If you're in first grade and keep getting "5" for the answer of "2+2=", the teacher's supposed to point out that you're wrong, not that you're writing with a very pretty pencil or some such bullshit.

Reviews exist so that people gather opinions about something before they buy a ticket, or buy a product.

Oh I see, so just don't post negative reviews or else the other people won't buy your "product".

Opinions are like assholes, we all have one and just because someone doesn't like something, doesn't mean I'm going to automatically hate it.

Heck a lot of critics gave the new Harry Potter movie good reviews and I didn't like it. :\
