OMG LITTLE KIDS WILL GET INTO MY SHOW!!!!111
4Kids (the company best known for unleashing Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh! on American audiences) announced today that they have the rights to One Piece.

Wank, predictably, enuses.

Posters at AnimeonDVD and Anime News Network threaten bodily harm to 4Kids representatives, fear the loss of fansubs, and talk of buying bootlegs.

Over on LJ, the one_piece comm really brings the splooge, with some of the best reactions yet.

Funimation is the devil! (Despite their efforts to improve and release both flavors of Dragonball Z.)

My favorite, "I don't want all those little kids getting posessive over it." Because, y'know, it's a kids show, and God forbid children should watch and get into it.

"Won't someone think of the fanfiction?!?!"

"p433r teh legions of idiots who will join our c0mm!!11"

*waits for 4Kids to announce they have the rights to Naruto*

Oh no they di'int just dis Funimation! *clutches FB DVDs tightly to bosom*

Actually, given 4Kids's history of mangling anime beyond recognition (Shaman King much?), I understand the fans' concern, even though I can take or leave One Piece. I just wish they'd stop being so wanky about it.

To be fair, both 4Kids and FOX suck copious amounts of ass at dubbing and editing, respectively.

Personally? I'm just waiting for the influx of Mary Sues. Not that it probably wasn't happening before, but you know.

As long as they handle both it (and eventually Nurato) like they did Card Captors Saukra,(as in release the full unedited version in both English and original Japanese on DVD) I think I'll live.

Even if they don't *shrugs*

I mean it is just a kid’s show.

I admit, I do share their sentiment considering 4Kids' track record (Hollywood Mew Mew, anyone?). But there's a difference between being reasonably pissed off and taking it to the point of wank. *sigh* And the OP comm is usually so sane....

I think the reason people are so uppity is that 4Kids has a rather annoying habit of butchering the series and not releasing uncut DVDs. Fortunately, FUNimation has announced they're doing just that with others of 4Kids' titles (SATAN SABAN RUINED THE DBZ DUB, YOU RETARDS!).

But yeah, I figured t was only a matter of time once the news got out. *sits back with clean popcorn and a SpoogeGuard umbrella*

I weep for my fandom.

Y'know, I used to be worried about the kiddies and brainless fan teenies getting into my non-licensed anime of choice when it became licensed too, and feared the flood of bad fanfics...

...However, it started getting flooded with bad yaoi and Mary Sues before it actually got licensed - and it hasn't been released in English yet (well, the manga's up to vol. 3), and it's getting worse and worse. It's definitely not the fault of licensing. The fanpoodles and kiddies will find these shows eventually, even if they stay only in Japan.

And as a side note, I recall when the licensing announcement for my show of choice was posted in my comm, it was largely the annoying fangirls who were the ones squealing "Nooooo, it'll attract annoying fangirls now!" Uhm.

Well, I guess I can understand what the splooge is being ever so fruitlessly wasted on, as... well, let's be honest. When translating something directly from Japanese to English, you'd lose a lot anyway, and some companies just couldn't be arsed to keep it faithful, you know?

I'm not saying this dub of One Piece will turn out like that. I mean, for all I know, it could end up better than the original - which isn't something I'm banking on, mind. But since people were also acting like this when Full Metal Alchemist was announced for an English translation... you'd think English was the language of the Devil and Japanese is OSOPUREOMG.

I've rambled. Having not seen One Piece, I'm going to save my splooge until some company decides to release Jungle Wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu in English.

Well, here's hoping they're starting to give into consumer pressure and will edit/rename/rewrite/badly dub this less than previous series. More likely, I'll avoid it like the plague as I did with Shaman King.

At least I'll have the fun of telling my little brothers about this. "Hey, you know how you were bitching about having to read subtitles?"
"Yeah?"
"Well, no more! It's liscensed and will be on TV!"
"Aw shit! Now everyone will watch it!"
"Not only that, you don't get any more new eps for years! HAHAHAAHAHA!!"
"EVIL!"

Yes, by getting them into anime early, I've turned them into mini cliche wankers.

Dude, I saw this and went "I wonder if this is on FW?" Bingo.

I do think the licensing rather sucks, though, seeing as 4Kids has never displayed any kind of respect (er) towards the original version of the series they've licensed. It's one thing when you can go "oh, I can watch the Japanese track with subtitles on the DVD", no problem there. But 4Kids has NEVER offered that option. That really has to suck for the fandom.

Licensing isn't bad, but it kind of brings an "ooh, ouch" reaction when the license goes to a company like that. *finishes wanking*

When did 4Kids and Funimation become synonymous? I thought 4Kids was owned by Saban or something. And, I thought Funi lost the rights to One Piece.

Ah, well, anyway. I don't watch Shaman King and I probably won't watch One Piece, but I do read the manga. It does kinda suck that 4Kids got OP, but whatever.

I actually don't think 4Kids'll get Naruto, even though that makes sense. There's too much weird shit going down in that show. Orochimaru, anyone? Or, for that matter, Curse-Seal Sasuke?

If they do, though, they'll make Haku a GIRL! *gigglefit*

The very minute I read about this getting licensed on Animesuki.com, I ran to the One Piece LJ Community, my crystalline tears of wank-anticipatory joy flowing behind me and mingling with the cherry blossoms. The wankers that whined about Funimation getting their hands on One Piece last year must be kicking themselves right now. Sanji style.

That said, I think we all agree that 4Kids does a pretty crappy job with their dubs, but now that they seem to have started sub-licensing the Japanese versions to companies that want them, it seems that they might finally be getting a clue. Besides, at least on TV it'll be free, and there's nothing cheaper than that.

*waits for 4Kids to announce they have the rights to Naruto*

I've said this so many times before, but... Oh, that will be a fantastic day indeed. There may even be killings within the fandom over it!

Why does this happen every time something gets licenced? And do fanpoodles in other countries wank when, say, Static Shock gets licenced there?

"OMG teh'll change Ritchie's name to Hiroshi!!11"

(although actually, it would be interesting to know what the name "Virgil Hawkins" was changed to--and I'm assuming it would be changed, because a name like "Virgil" would be awfully hard for a Japanese 6-year-old to pronounce)

That said, in my view, 4Kids has two sides to them. The crappy side that edits things, and the good side that gets decent voice actors who do quality work.

So really anything by them will get cut but be nice to listen to.

Well, having seen a few eps, I must say that I'm not particularly enamoured with the series. If anything, the voices are just wrong for a good number of the roles. Hopefully, the dub will sound better. But then, that requires a decent translation, which may or may not happen.

As long as it doesn't turn into another Witch Hunter Robin, which even I could tell was a bad translation without having seen anything in the original Japaneese, things shall be okay.

I wouldn't say that One Piece is a kids show. Neither was Yu-Gi-Oh. Both were aimed at young teenage males. And yes, the dub of Yu-Gi-Oh is aimed at a younger audience. And yes, this did result in the direction that the dubbing took. And yes, the dub of Yu-Gi-Oh is shit and that's why 4kids doesn't have a good reputation.

'Sides, haven't studies proved that wanking regularly is perfectly normal? ;)

And besides, Funi has recently announced uncut subbed versions of most of the 4Kids properties, so maybe they're finally starting to realize that it's not such a good thing to alienate the fanbase that's already there *g*

I agree with them. When you have licenced DVDs on the market it means that everyone can watch it, and that isn't right. People with 56k modems, or can't use BitTorrent or IRC on their computer are obviously going to be inferior fans. Why? Because if they actually cared about watching the show, they'd get broadband and/or buy a new computer. If they only get it when it's licenced, they're just copying us!

We need to keep these people out of our fandoms!!
