Me? I've got no problem dissing Mary Sues. It's a fictional character, not the author, and honestly if a bunch of random people on teh intarweb are enough to make these people stop writing then they have worse problems than poor characterization.

The "OMG I am full of hate! Kill Mary Sue DIE DIE DIE!!!1BBQ!" comments are a bit OTT, though. Yeah, so Mary Sues are dumb. They're not worthy of the death sentence.

Besides, what would people mock if they didn't exist? ;)

Maybe it doesn't need to--but it's fun. Nothing wrong with a little verbal Half-Life.

On a more serious note? Criticism, even--maybe even especially--abrasive criticism is a pretty well-respected field. I read Television Without Pity and the Bad Movie Report, too. Are people actually mad about the things they see there or read in bad fic? The Mammoth Hunters_ certainly drives me to wish bloody death upon Jean Auel, and I want to throw Virginia Henley off a cliff. I don't see why fanfic is any different.
