The Wicked Wank of the West
Over on the [info]wicked_musical group, things get a mite heated in a discussion of one of the Broadway cast members.

The OP makes a post entitled Idina Menzel: The Wicked Bitch of Broadway?

And the crowd goes wild. Some highlights:

No, Kristin Chenoweth's the one who's nasty! Southern Baptists are TEH EVOL OMG!!!1

When I said she was a bitch, I didn't mean a BITCH bitch!

She's not bad, she's just drawn that way!

What if you threw a stalker party and the stalkee didn't come?

I go to a Catholic school and we had many discussions about homosexuality in Religion class and my friends and I would always win the debate because my religion teacher and most of the guys were against homosexuality.

Yes, because everyone knows that it's your position that counts in a debate, not the way you discuss it.

I think I lost a few braincells reading that "Southern Baptist" thread. And I'm not even going to touch that remark about the Amish- soooo many things wrong in just that little statement.

Well, duh! It's all about arguing a point so that years later, you can be all, "See, I'm not prejudiced! I argued in favor of teh gay. Go me!" Didn't they teach you anything in school? [/sarcasm]

it's wank like this that makes me wish i had a code...

*eyes water and lower lip quivers pathetically*

i don't care what anyone says, broadway can bring the wank with the best of 'em. hell, someone left a comment in my livejournal saying that wicked should have won best musical and avenue q didn't deserve it because "they're just puppets". if we're going on credibility of appearances one might bring up the fact that wicked features a goat teaching classes and a tiny blonde girl in a bubble...

The novel it's based on's pretty good. I'm reading it at present...

It's also incredibly different from the novel. Like Nessarose has arms, and she doesn't seem to be such a fekking psycho, from my CD. Jeebus, she's scary.

I read the book too. A LOT seems differed. And Nessarose was my favorite character in the book, actually...

...Yes, I'm very weird.

Oh my god, the Tony wank is huge. The broadway community has quite a few examples of this.

Yeah. Some Wicked community members had some kind of hate-on for Avenue Q, since they lost the Best Musical of the Year award. After the dozens of posts about how Avenue Q sucked, there were more posts how everyone should shut up. It filled up most of my friends page.

Haven't been able to hear the Wicked soundtrack yet, so I really can't judge. Will be fixing that as soon as I finish the novel.

I'm a serious fan of Avenue Q, though. Sent "The Internet Is For Porn" lyrics to every librarian I knew after I heard it at work....

*whispers to you* Go to codes, and they'll hook you up.

wicked features a goat teaching classes

You know, I can think of at least three classes I took as an undergrad that would have been improved by a goat teaching them.

thank you! *runs there*

i agree about the improvement of classes if they're taught by a goat. especially considering that the goat in wicked SINGS! i certainly wouldn't fall asleep during physics if a goat was singing me the formula for acceleration.

In all fairness, it was slightly disturbing to watch a puppet feel up Hugh Jackman... and yet, there was something about it that was so right.

Dude. I mean, I liked Eponine better than Cosette, but I wouldn't, you know, FIGHT with someone over it. That's just... well, let's just say it demonstrates a definite lack of priorities.

Re:

Trust me, Eponine vs. Cosette is like the Last Judgement, Battle for the World, etc. of Les Mis fandom. Generally the problem is that it doesn't stop at "I like Eponine better", it turns into "omg I am just liek Eponine!!1!!1one!1! Cosette iz jest a mean beeotch and she liek stole Marius from Eponine omg! Eponine and Marius wur meant 2 be!" And then I wank all the fuck over the place. It's sad really.

[info]smo

That is sad, because technically I agree with them, but... no, no wanking on the subject, please.

Re:

*cringe* I'll pretend you didn't say that so I don't get the urge to be wanky. ;-) But yeah, there's a serious problem of people demonising Cosette because without her Marius totally would have fallen for Eponine (um, wha? on what planet?). I mean yeah sure, you can not like Cosette all you want (I personally do, but she can be rather dull sometimes, I can understand why people wouldn't), but she didn't even know Eponine, it's not as if she woke up one morning and was like "hmm... how can I destroy some random urchin girl's life? oh I know, I'll contrive to randomly meet her boyfriend and then steal him!!" Of course these girls also refuse to admit that Eponine totally got romanticised by the musical and that novel canon is different and not as nice to her, and... yeah. Then not only is it a character war then, it's a novel canon vs. musical canon battle.

This is slightly off the subject, but Wicked wank isn't restricted to the musical. Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0060987103/qid=1086820874/sr=8-2/ref=pd_ka_2/102-6170223-0446527?v=glance&s=books&n=507846) has a couple of, erm, interesting reviews.

First, someone whines about how the book contains "overly gratuitous and revolting" sexual content. Uh-huh.

This one is, by far, my favorite:
"I heard this book was very in, it was even made into a certain musical comedy. I was expecting ointments on how to turn your skin green, be extra wicked, attach wings to small and fairly frightening monkeys ect. but all I got was a boring story about talking animals and a very in a popular girl... Rubbish. Don't buy this book. It is an out book. Therefore, it is NOT in! The part where she has an affair is kind of in though. After all, I'm having one."

No, I'm not sure that one wasn't a joke. But still.

*bounce* I was waiting for this to show up so I didn't have to report it myself!!

I hate the "so and so is a bitch at the stage door" wank that inevitably comes up in any Broadway fandom. Why in the fuck do you care if people are nice if you like their performance? You're paying to see the show, not to be buddy buddy with the cast. I mean yes, some people are /incredibly/ good to their fans and will spend a million years after the show talking to people, but I've seen people get stuck with psychos they can't get rid of as a result (Randal Keith from the Les Mis tour comes to mind). Yeesh, all y'all out of my fandom!
