The Saiyuki Wank Incident
I love my fandom dearly, but this needed to be wanked.

Sariyuki started a "38 Incidents" project to promote Sanzo x Hakkai: authors are writing toward a goal of 38 ficlets for an underrepresented pairing. It's been a hit so far--22 fics submitted in a little over a month. It's a nice idea, because the fandom is pretty much dominated by 58 (Gojyo x Hakkai) and 39 (Sanzo x Goku). Sure, it's not canon, but come on, THERE IS NO CANONICAL YAOI IN SAIYUKI. The beauty of the series is that you can pair up virtually any of the characters.

Non-38 fans start complaining. Why? Because of the contest's sudden popularity. Because it's supposedly increased the amount of crap on FF.net. Because 38 conflicts with their "canonical" OTP. Despite the fact that THERE IS NO CANONICAL YAOI IN SAIYUKI. 38 fans get called upon to justify their pairing. Someone even proposes a "39 Incidents" project, to combat the onslaught. 39 is possibly the most popular Saiyuki pairing out there, so holding a similar challenge for it would be moot, and contradicts why the "Incidents" project was created in the first place.

*clears throat* I'm both a 38 and 58 fan myself, so it really cheeses me to see that fans on both sides can't get along.

Sorry, this will be a dumb question, 'cause I'm not into Anime, but, er, why are the pairings numbered?

Oh, sorry. It's because the characters' names have Japanese numbers in them or are homophonous with Japanese numbers:

SANzo=3
GOjyo=5
HAkkai=8
goKU=9

And a few others, but those are the main ones. The numbers system is just a cute shorthand. The same thing happens in Gundam Wing fandom, where the characters also have number names (Heero=1, Duo=2, Trowa=3, etc.).

Well, Azumanga Daioh seems to do fine without them. And I doubt that there's any in My Neighbor Totoro. 'Course, that means there's much less wank on them to mock.

these kinds of battles always make me laugh, even though I know nothing about the fandom. I always feel how my mom must have felt when my friends and I would argue about Superman Vs Captain America, or if my half elven mage could totally pwn a bug-bear at 50 paces...

Oh, great! WTF happened to just WATCHING anime, ya know!??? Why there's got to be numbers, shippers and FF.Net? LOL! Honestly - Saiyuki is SHONEN and YES, there're NO CANON! Why people can't relize that whatever is going on behind the show and in Fandom is for the most parts imaginary stuff of the fangirls with different taste in guys? I like 53 myself, but it's just my preference, I will not rip someone's head off for that. Ugh! Get a life already...

Personally, I want Sanzo to have hot angry sex with Gojyo, smoke pot with Hakkai, get a bj from Goku and go to bed, so that Gojyo and Hakkai can have their best friend sex, and then Hakkai can spoon with Goku like in the secone ending, and then Goku can get molested by Homura, who it turn wanders off for a threesome with his guys whose names I can't remember, and Koukaiji will be left out and feel sorry for himself, until Homura molests him, too. And then everyone is happy.

I don't like the 'Incidents' thing, but it has nothing to do with Sanzo/Goku OTP!!!

I just wish they'd done '89 Incidents' instead, it's a helluva lot more rare and more fun besides.

I've been trying to get into Saiyuki lately since all my friends are suddenly OMGYAY over it, but they all warned me and each other to stay the hell away from the fandom.

I guess this is why.

First of all, I really appreciate this post. The first post I saw in this week that didn't slightly bash the 38 Incidents Project. Thank you.

I'd like to clarify a few things.

I did not start The 38 Incidents Project to promote 383. It was an entirely selfish motive on my part, which was to get more 383 fics. Nothing as noble as promoting 383 fandom as was often thought by those who are so afraid of getting run over by the sudden 383 outbreak. The origin and aim of this project are clearly stated in the main page (http://www.angelfire.com/stars4/desperateheart/SaiyukiObsession.html) of the 38 Incidents Project.

My suggestion to the people in that category I just mentioned is this: be patient, once 38 fics are gathered, it'll be over.

Oh, by the way, there's 23 fics now ^_~

Saiyuki fandom has big enough room for everyone, I believe. I wish people will stop getting defensive and start being sensible and tolerable towards the diversity in the fandom.

I am a 383 fan, as if you cannot tell. But I read 585 fics from time to time (even wrote 2 pieces of 58 fics) and enjoy reading 535 too because they're just so delicious together... And of course, let's not forget the wonderful threesome of Homura/Zenon/Shien :D

As you said, no pairing is canon in Saiyuki until Minekura Kazuya-sama tells us otherwise.

Lastly, this probably has nothing to do with the topic at hand but I really appreciate people not posting links to my journal.
