WARNING: Gaia wank ahead.

Okay, so it starts when one Mr Smigs posts the following in the writer's forum:

1. Stop the Madness... stop writing fanfics... if the creator of the story wanted that to happen in their world, it would have...
be origional, make your own stories in your own worlds...

2. If you're going to try to lable me... at least get it right... I'm Pompous more than pretentious...

and those who try to discredit me do little more then prove they are nothing but sheep... bleeting their empty praises to the masses while providing nothing useful to society but what people can take by shearing them...

Not wanky enough on its own, but it gets better when he later says he hates fanfiction because:

see the problem is that for the 1 in a ba-jillion fanfics that is even worth reading, all those others are people who think they might have some chance at being like that 1....
therein lies the problem
while fanfics exist, wannabes will exist

I don't know how bad fanfic writer = wannabe in Smigs' mind but it does.

To be honest, his whining over being labeled and his firm belief that he is a unique and special snowflake in a mass of sheep coupled with his obnoxious overuse of elipses makes me want to hit him more than his stance on fanfiction. And he claims he isn't pretentious.

The whole she-bang is here. It's small now, but it's likely to grow, what with that Hemp Fandango chick getting her knickers in a twist.

Edit because it's getting better: Smigs returns.

first up... hate fanfics 'cause they're from wanabees who write crap, think it's good, and take offence at criticism...

second... the "fanfics" that people do see (dracula, myths whatnot)... have at least been published... doesn't mean they're great... but does mean that someone thinks they were good enough to publish... or remember in the case of myths... that says alot for them... internet released fics don't have that going for them... thus it's like a plague of rats spreading their bile across my screen...

proper grammar, spelling i don't need. I'm an engeneer... i'd speak withcode, but i doubt even the 1337 would get that...
and i think to fast to double check anyways...

I wish I were an "engeneer" then I wouldn't have to bother with that whole spelling and grammar nonsense. I somehow doubt "thinking too fast" is your problem, sweets.

I hate to pick on a spelling mistake, but "bleeting" is one of the most hilarious ones I've seen. It's like one of those words you substitute for profanity. :D

I really want to say that the OP is just upset because his fanfics didn't get the mountains of "OMG PLZ RITE MORE!!11" reviews that several others get, but that would be just tactless of me.

That said, if he feels that way about fanfic, which mostly isn't written for profit, I'm kind of left to wonder what his stance is on games that take, say, either someone else's creative work or a certain portion of history and rape it to such an extent it becomes something of an alternate universe fanfic, which would be made for money. (I'm looking at you, Koei.) *shrugs* It was just a thought.

Meh, I can understand and agree to an extent. I mean..I do sometimes feel like saying, "Wow, you're a good writer...PLS COME UP WITH YOUR OWN STORIES NOW K THX". But I don't think they're totally uncreative in and of themselves. It just seems like fanfic is more of an excercise in writing...an enjoyable way to work off some fantasies and experiment with things. I'm probably going to be beaten with stones for saying this...but I never really considered fanfic as legitimate writing.

I know I'm going to be wanked for that statement...

I originally started writing fanfic to get better with my original fic. And I've got a great orig. fic plotbunny, so I haven't been writing as much fanfic lately. And I've received the OMG U R LETTING FANZ DOWN U SUK AND ORIGINAL FIC SUX U HAT FANDOM emails.

What...the...shit?

I like writing fanfic, but if it comes to fanfic vs. orig. fic, I'm always going with the orig. stuff. Sorry, that's just how I am. And these emails? Were because I hadn't posted any new fanfic in ten days.

Fandom. Sometimes (ok, most of the time) it's scary.

I never really considered fanfic as legitimate writing.

I can't quite put my finger on the ethical difference between something like the Draco Trilogy and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead--I can feel it, but I can't quite articulate it or justify it. I mean, how do you say one is "more serious" than the other? I'm sure a lot of people write fanfic epics in complete artistic seriousness. And of course there are a lot of people who'll tell you that they don't really give a damn if it's "legitimate" because that's not why they're writing anyway.

What I'm trying to say, in an extremely delicate way, is that I totally see what you're saying. I don't write fanfic, unless you consider movie parodies to be fanfic (which you might)--I've always written original fiction. I definitely feel you on the "Wow, you're a good writer...PLS COME UP WITH YOUR OWN STORIES NOW K THX" part--that's the kind of thing I'd like to read, and I'd rather create original characters and settings where I'm in complete control and not having to consider someone else's canon.

I don't think that there's anything wrong with using fanfic as a way to improve your basic skills in preparation for professional writing. But I don't think that you absolutely need to do that, either. If someone's happy just writing fanfic, then that's what they should write. Some people may be content with just writing for fun, without getting into all the pressure and drama of the publishing world. (Especially considering that, no matter how good you are, the odds of being published are pretty much infintesimal. In fanfic, you may be a big fish in a small pond, but in the Real World, there are a million people just as talented as you, and every one of them is trying to sell their novel.)

And maybe I'm just selfish, but I don't want anyone kicked out of fandom the second they start writing well. Good fic is rare enough as it is.

PLS COME UP WITH YOUR OWN STORIES NOW K THX

I only write fanfic now, except for the rare inspiration elsewhere for original fic or poetry. However, I don't consider myself a "serious writer" either, so I don't take offense to your statement. I'm an English major, I'd rather READ literature than WRITE it.

However, I have to say, that in my various fandoms, I've run into some seriously, seriously talented fanfic writers who manage to get characterization, description, plot, etc all down perfectly, to the point where I honestly don't think a professional outside of the originater of the work could have done it better. The difference between you and me is that when I see those people, I don't encourage them to write their own stuff. Call me selfish if you'd like, but I think what a person wants to write about it his or her own business, and if it both comes out well and benefits my need for good fanfic, then I see no problem with that whatsoever. If that same person decides to pursue original fic, then good luck to 'em, but that's their own look out.

But maybe they don't WANT to? This is rather like telling someone who is an excellent dressmaker to "stop using purchased patterns and make your own designs." I dislike the idea that only a certain kind of art is art, or a certain kind of writing is writing. Fanficcers are pushed to write original fic, and original fic writers are pushed to write for publication. Published writers are pushed to stop writing "genre crap." And on and on it goes until a very narrow pinnacle of literary fiction is reached, at which there are probably people who don't think your stuff is worth a damn unless you've won a prize. Writing shouldn't be a burden, writers (gosh, especially hobbyist writers, for pete's sake why HAVE a hobby if you don't enjoy it?) should write what they like to write and what they're good at writing.

And I've said probably a hundred times in discussions like this that I find fanfic tougher, having written both, but then, I do a lot of worldbuilding in fanfic. I like to take the familiar parts of the author's world and extrapolate beyond it, since it's the world that interests me as a writer, and not the characters as much.

::just DIES laughing:: I just spent 2 hours fighting with FORTRAN because of an error mesage my mentor eventually traced to me forgetting four characetrs in a prgram that probably has somewhere like 150-200 lines of code. Programmers and engineers and scientists have to be exact and double-check, because while most readers will overlook a misplaced semi-colon, a computer won't. And then it will get pisser than a Pottersues Minion in a Mary Sue Writer convention and start filling your screen with whiny error messages.

Bitch, please.
