How Not to Become a Well Loved BNF, lesson #1
I'm sure a few of you are aware of an anime called Full Metal Alchemist. It's a trifling little drama about alchemy, and had gathered a small little fandom of its own, despite being so, well, microscopic.

A little while back, [info]scimitarsmile opened up an archive for Full Metal Alchemist fanfiction. Probably to her surprise, interest was unusually high, and she found herself hosting many stories (some by notably excellent writers). Even above the pit of voles Fanfiction.net, this site gained notoriety as THE place to archive FMA fiction.

How does something like this happen? How does one humble webmistress become exalted above all the rest? Part of it is skill, of course: the site has a clean look and is easy to navigate. But the rest is clearly serendipity; there was a vortex of bad fanfiction out there, and clearly this miniscule, chibi, hardly-to-be-accounted for shrimpy fandom needed a decent outlet.

Well, [info]scimitarsmile gave us one. And in return for this, what does she acquire? A Giant Fucking Prima Donna Complex, aka, her "Story Archiving Policies." At issue is the following bullet point:

1. The primary requirement is that all completed FmA stories by any hosted author are archived here. It's an all-or-nothing agreement.*

EDIT: As has been pointed out, I can and do make exceptions. They're rare, and entirely at my discretion.

...

As is often the case, the best wank can be found in the replies, as incredulous hangers on boggle over how any writer could possible find exception to a policy that wrests online publishing control of fics from an author, although [info]scimitarsmile's wounded ego is amusing to witness as well.

6.11.04 EDIT: [info]scimitarsmile has locked the thread. Yes, THAT [info]scimitarsmile, the one who said "I'd lock this thread but I have such a strong streak against censorship." Um, psyche?

Please, both of you, stop. I appreciate the discussion but I'm not enjoying being crucified after time I've spent telling other sites and people in other fandoms about the magnficient authors and artists. It's a little depressing.

and

Yes, I'm feeling a bit back-stabbed.

*sigh*

and

I'll refrain from lauding over excellent writers in the future.

Hee. People aren't usually that UP FRONT about their raging martyr complexes, you know? She's so honest!

Full fanfic publishing rights? DAMN YOU, INTERNET LAWERS!

Huh. When I write fanfic, there's usually two or three I write before I like one well enough to publish. That's because the other three suck.

I'm now really tempted to write FMA fanfic, put up the decent one, then put up the 32 chapter epic wherein they're surprised Al has navel fuzz.

Sorry, but if this chick has the time to do all this coding that's apparently hundreds of hours of backbreaking labor that makes her FINGERS BLEED OMG AND YOU PEOPLE ARE SO NOT GRATEFUL, she has time to drop the author an email and make sure it's okay to archive the fic.

Being archived in place like SS is an honor. It's a stamp of esteem for you as an author, not just for a specific fic but for your work in general, and it does give you a lot of advantages as an author.

This made me crack up so badly - jeebus, it's fanfiction, people, lighten up on the melodrama.

Minion A: *gasp* "How dare you spit on this honor, this HONOR of being... HOSTED!"

Some choice bits from my personal favorite response by flamesword:

Are people just that insecure that they don't want their work exposed to a larger audience?

So, disagreeing with an archiving policy and backing it up by requesting that one's stories be removed = insecure. Gotcha

Being archived in place like SS is an honor. It's a stamp of esteem for you as an author

So you, the author, must demonstrate this boon of "esteem" by kissing the archivists' ass.

I find it hard to believe[...] that having been given that kind of respect you're choosing to throw it away. It IS your choice, of course, certainly; but considering the time and money Sol puts into this archive[...].

Because, after all, putting time and money into something automatically means that someone can't possibly be wrong....

In any case...I have trouble seeing how people can view this as a control issue in the first place. It's an honor [...] seems to me that apparently you have control or paranoia issues to misconstrue her motivations and actions in such a way.

So, those ungrateful authors having a say in whether or not they choose to be part of an archive isn't a control issue. And it's all the author's fault for not understanding the depths of the archivist's generosity and benevolence in exalting their works to the lofty heights of the One True Archive.

Well. That clears that up.

*is confused*
(Anonymous)
2004-06-11 10:38 am UTC (link)
Now, bear with me just a moment, because I am very confused. Unless this archivist is a hacker, she had to get these stories from somewhere besides the files on these people's computers, presumably blogs and the like. That makes sense.

Here's the part that confuses me: If these people don't want their stuff published, why did they publish it? There are ways to send fics to the specific people you want to see them, without making them available to the general public. And since they are available to the general public, why not put them where they can be seen?

"All-or-nothing" archiving is a common policy in many fandoms, and generally people don't have a problem with it. Should somebody jump down the throat of someone who requests to be removed? No, absolutely not. But by the same token, neither should people be rude about the way the webmistress chooses to run her archive, especially when it is a common and accepted method.

Point being, if there is something that was posted on an archive that the author didn't want there, how hard is it to ask that it be removed? From what I've read, these requests are filled, no harm done. If harm is done, why was it posted somewhere that the archivist or anyone else who wanted to could find it in the first place?

~Amanda~

Maybe I'm missing it here, but it didn't seem to me like Scimitar Smile was being too bad. And from what I'm to understand, anytime someone has asked her for a story to be removed, she has done it. That, to me, seems to be a means of creator control. Plus, she doesn't archive WIPs and drafts, anyhow, so that's not a problem.

I gotta say, there was wank here, but I didn't see it coming from Scimitar Smile. Plus, if those are the rules of the archive, and she *invites* you to join, wouldn't you at least go to the site and peruse the rules or information section, at least once? If you don't like the rules of an archive, you can always, you know, not join in the first place.

And I'm not even in the FMA fandom! O_o *scratches head*

I think the general point being missed is that it shouldn't matter why an author doesn't want a particular piece archived. The fact is, it is the writer who should always have complete control over their own fanfics, no-one else. Who cares if the reasons are silly or results in less adoration? That should be up to the writer and the writer only.

And, please. An archive might expose a brilliant writer to the fandom, but in the end it is still the writer who made that story so fucking fabulous in the first place.

I'm not saying I agree with SS's policy, but it is her right to have the policy and run her website the way she sees fit.

What's with all the bashing? It seems she's been pretty upfront with what she's asking, and she's not hurting anyone. If an author doesn't agree with what she does on her site, then the author doesn't have to agree to have their stories archived. End of discussion.

Continuation of these types of bashing will only lead to more heated words, fandom - and cross fandom - riffs. My understanding is, SS's all or nothing policy isn't a new thing. It's been done across fandoms and websites for years prior to SS becoming involved in FMA.

This flash in the pan outrage will die out, but the wound it leaves behind with the discouraging words will continue to linger.

Before more fuel is thrown, please think about what you're so incised about. The webmistress isn't stepping on your rights. You have the right to have her archive your stuff, or not. You have the right to set up your own website and institute your own policies as you see fit. I've seen nothing to indicate a prima dona attitude, but one who is trying to throw reason into an increasingly mob mentality.

And lest I forget, you do have the right to complain and bitch, but does that really mean you should? Is stomping your foot and demanding your way the right thing to do? From what I've read, this act has only pulled the FMA fandom down to levels seen in other fandoms, and the outcomes are never pretty.

Merith

And, as is the case for most communities/journals of this kind, the material most worthy of wank! is that which is printed here, in all its ignorant glory.

If you don't understand the discussion, don't comment on it. Misinterpreting the policies, taking comments out of context and fueling the fire with unfounded commentary that shows you clearly didn't understand the thread doesn't exactly reflect well on you. Bigger wank! communities are presently eyeing *you* and your reasoning.

Fanfiction is unlike original fiction in the sense that the readership doesn't have to be coaxed over-it has a readership ready to gobble down whatever is printed. However, finding good stories is like wading through a sea of manure, which is why we have 'elitist' archives. Fanfiction is a far more social genre than original fiction- the stories are written to be shared with like-minded persons, which is what fandom is all about. I believe some fanfiction to be art, but the genre doesn't exist without an audience.

Okay dearies, if you haven't any confidence in your work don't waste space on the internet with it at all. I'm sorry- writers *can't* control their audience- you can't control who reads your writing, nor can you control what they take from it. It is the writers' curse, and it plagues both amateur and professional. You'll need to come to terms with that someday.

This "Prima Donna" Complex, of which you speak is far more applicable to the writers who have thrown virtual, artistic temper tantrums than the archivist who is wasting her time promoting fic that doesn't seem wanting-or deserving- of any advertising.
That isn't commentary on the quality of the fiction, but of the perception I now have of said fics after reading the authors' responses.

Of course, this is a thread based on principle, not on reasoning. People don't like to be given ultimatums thus they act according to whatever principle suits them, which is fine. But principles should be well-founded- don't develop them on art forms whose elements you clearly don't understand.

So the archivist was upset and her defense mechanism is to rev up ye olde messiah-complex- whatever. People are libeling her- I'd feel maligned too. She has put countless hours into coding fics for people only to have them renege on the agreement they initially made (and based on the policy she's always implemented). People complain that she posted unfinished works by accident, and you know why? Because she's trying to keep on top of everything- because both writers and readers complain when webmasters are behind in their updating. Those of you who are masochistic enough to archive will understand, and those of you who aren't should erect a monument to your proper webmaster/mistress because you're taking them for granted.

Because I'm a'feelin' the wanky spirit rise (halleluia! testify!) and I don't want this comment eaten into a link...

Babe, sit down, shut your mouth, and listen up. I've RUN major archives. You know what's going on here? Sheer sloppy greed. She doesn't want to actually bother to READ the stories she's archiving. Maybe she intended quality at first, but now she's going for volume to keep her BNF status. She finds one good story by an author, she wants to be lazily able to just assume that the rest are good too without actually LOOKING at them. I know this urge. I've fought it myself. And I (usually) won. Obviously, she hasn't.

And as a prolific author, you're damn right I'd slap her grasping little hand and tell her to keep the fuck away from my fanfic. Some of my fic is public but it's NOT for archival elsewhere. Some are exclusive only to my site, and some are gifts for friends with personal meaning, and some are not very good but I keep them around for nostalgia. I wrote it. It's mine. If she can't politely ask, even just for blanket permission, she can't damn well have.

Not even professional publishers can keep an author in a "all your future works belong to us!" contract.

The fanfiction belongs to the writer, not the archivist. Even the archivist in question admits this. So WTF is up with the anonymice saying a writer has no say, period?

And as someone else pointed out, apparently some of the better-known writers are bowing out of [info]scimitarsmile's archive. Completely predictible, and completely deserved.

Dumbass.
