Congratulations, it's a boy!
This is a mini wank, almost not a wank at all, but I thought it was very cuddly all the same. Gave me a giggle, I thought I'd share.

Right. The Leaky Cauldron points to an update of the HPL, where Steve says that the Portugese HP translation team asked JKR about Blaise Zabini's gender, and she herself has just confirmed that he is a boy.

Pretty straightforward so far, but then baby wank erupts in the LC comments.

Anon: now won't all the fanfic authors who have written blaise as a girl feel stupid now? hehehehe

Randy: Can we maybe stop it with the insinuation that all people who thought Blaise was a girl were idiots?

AlbertM Ah. The Portuguese translation team has confirmed it? I reckon that settles it, then. Look! I am rolling my eyes! ;)

So in other words, we have no confirmation. I think Blaise is a wizard. But until Rowling states otherwise by writing "him/her" or having Blaise drop trou then I guess it should remain a mystery, should it not? But if the exalted Portuguese Translation Team says so....

Bridget: Eh. I was actually sort of hoping that it'd be a mystery for ever...one of those things we all love to discuss but will never know the answer to. Meh.

Erica: I agree with Bridget, some mysteries are better left unsolved. The whole thing may have been a minor (some might say stupid)aspect of the HP fandom, but it was one of those little things that made it so fun...And now it's gone. :-(

Okay, probably not that wanky. But funny all the same.

You have the right to your opinion but...Blaise has been a favourite male name of mine for a very long time, and I'm thoroughly sick of the whole question which I always found stupid.

You know, before I stumbled into the HP fandom and saw the issue being discussed, I hadn't realised that Blaise could even be a girl's name. Even once I learned it could be female too, I was always sure he'd be a boy. Girl!Blaise sounds a bit too Starlight-Unique-Chastity-Moonbeam-Leguinivanastasia-von-Einhorn in my opinion. :)

Every time I see "HP" I think of "HPL", as in "H.P. Lovecraft", and now there's actually a Harry Potter related thingy that's "HPL"? Huh.

Last time I checked the Pit of Voles, there was only one Lovecraftian/Cthulhu type Harry Potter fic, and that one was humor. I mean, jeez, there's like three or four Lovecraftian Ranma 1/2 fics, and Ranma is a freaking comedy! I'd think that the Potter fandom, what with the series being more of a drama, and having a partly non-human Evil Overlord, would have at least a couple Lovecraftian horror stories. Hell, G.I. Joe even had a Lovecraftian episode once.

*ahem* Sorry to wander off topic.

I've been ducking and covering ever since I read this post on TLC. Still waiting for somebody to drop the Big Wank and blow us all to hell.

This amused me...the comments about Blaise spark a discussion about sexually ambiguous character names in HP, resulting in this exchange:

"I thought Professor Sinistra's gender didn't need confirmation because she is seen dancing at the Yule ball with imposter!Moody. I mean, they wouldn't exactly dance together if Professor Sinistra were a guy. No openly gay characters in Harry Potter yet, are there?"

That's the problem, unless we know his/her gender, we just don't know if there are openly gay characters.

Hee. Personally, I think if Mad-Eye Moody was seen dancing with a guy, Harry would be all, "MOODY???!!!SINISTRA???!!!WTF, MATE???"

Personally, I'm breaking out cigars if anyone wants to celebrate the confirmation of Boy!(Thankfuck)Blaise.

Randy: Can we maybe stop it with the insinuation that all people who thought Blaise was a girl were idiots

Azazello to Randy: Erm, no. Because if I remember rightly most of the people who wrote Girl!Blaise were idiots. And here is why...

JKR is an English writer, try as some of the fandom might to make it otherwise, so English rules apply to the names. In English, Blaise is a boys name, world without end, ever shall be, amen. It's not some Californian equivalent to Paige or Brooke.

Original provenance for purposes magic, is in all probability from Le Morte D'Arthur, the Arthurian Legends, Master Blaise of Northumberland converted Merlin to Christianity. This would fit in with JKR's occasional references to English Folklore/Legend [/Folklore-nerd]

So please, can we now just accept that Girl!Blaise, aside from providing fanon with one of the worst Mary Sue's in the history of the fandom, is just over.

Party on!

The Blaise Zabini thing (I will never understand the fascination...NEVER) is something that has boggled me for YEARS. Before my computer crashed, I was keeping a running tally at FictionAlley to see how many fics had him as a girl and how many as a guy. The tally was, unfortunately, lost when my harddrive kicked the bucket, but at last count, the guys did outnumber the girls by more then half. Thus, I find the splooge especially amusing and this little tidbit of info even more interesting.

Have I proven I'm pathetic enough?
