Venus Envy wankage (not the Rita Mae Brown book)
Venus Envy, a webcomic whose central character is a MTF transsexual high school student, has had a dark arc. Erin Lindsey did warn that the story was going to take on a darker tone, oh... months back? and has been doing thus here and there.

The plot just exploded and people on the message board (beware, it's an EZboard) start out rather humorous but some are up in arms. How dare you! How could you! Give me teh funney back! First it starts out kind of mild but then there's...

"Really, I can't help feeling that after all the stuff of the past few months, it might be nice if something pleasant happened to Zoe for a change...

and then there's chime ins of "I've gotten tired of the constant melodrama, heartache, and the plain cruelity of the story surrounding the main characters."

which garners a reply of
"That's life for you, isn't it? Life is full of heartache and cruelty. It shouldn't be that way, but it just is at this time in history.

Erin deserves kudos more for going down this line than not."

Feanix states:
"Okay, before you all scream "melodrama" realise that some people lives arent very happy. Some people seem to go bad and get a little bit better, and just when you're thinking "hey, maybe life's not so bad after all" wham!! Everything falls apart.

Also, no one forced you to read it and you have no right to creative control. I think that was really nasty of all you people who said "we're sick of this". "

But AnimeLizzy or whatever says:
"There's just one thing - How FAR down the line is too far? Aparently, too far is when people start complaining about it."

Yeah, I chimed in as well with the "don't read it" nostrum. The wank seems to have mopped itself up since I went out and did laundry and came back but who knows...

Everybody's got triggers but if every author/artist/screenwriter/etc. worried about what would traumatize or anger people, there would be nothing to build fandoms around.

(edited for linkage feckup and because I always have another thing to say)

Meh, I know nothing of the storyline but I can relate to this.

One of the reason I stopped reading Strangers in Paradise was because I was burned out the by the constant, never ending angst.

Sorry but I think way to many authors seem to equate angst with good story telling, assuming that the more a character suffers, no matter how ridiculous it is, the better the story is.

And to that I just have to say Bitch, PLEASE.

You should read the comic. It's quite good.

Word. I'm considering giving up on Queen of Wands for the same reason. It's always had occasional angsty plot arcs, but they were easier to stomach when I was reading the archive all at once. Also, the older ones didn't sound like the plot was lifted from a bad afterschool special-- the most recent one, however, was an overwrought, humorless flashback involving teen pregnancies, meddling parents, breakups, forbidden love, and suicide attempts. And now it seems like even the humorous strips are going to revolve around the pregnancy of one of the less interesting characters, which isn't a topic that interests me no matter how well it's handled.

Oh well. At least I've still got Something Positive; I'm pretty sure Milholland will never go all sappy-angsty on us.

I read it too and I hope not. Then again, I have no faith in humanity.

Word to that and WORD to what Icz said about Strangers in Paradise. I knew a baby was a huge shark jump and I stopped reading SiP after the plane crash.

Generally VE is angst and humor thrown together, sometimes it veers more to the dark humor, other times it's not funny. I like angsty stuff as long as there's some resolution and, well, I'm just waiting to see what happens next.

Hey, I follow this! Alright, a comic that I actually read :)

Yeah, it's getting darker. And yeah, she warned us about this months ago. Maybe even last year? So why is everyone up in arms about it?

...oh, wait. This is fandom. Silly me.

I need to catch up on Venus Envy.

Not to mention Alex has more justified angst then most.

What's cool about VE is that after a few strips, you can forget that Alex was born a guy.

And just when you do, Erin throws you a reminder of that fact that you just can't miss.

The funny is good too. One of my favs:
"Is anyone at this table straight?"
"Um, we think I am . . ."

I love Zoe to bits.

Heh.. the paper comic had "Ali? Aly? Aley?" which made me think "out are in free" was to follow.

Nope, still goin'. Then again VE and Loxie and Zoot are the only web comics I read (with the exception of a non fandom friend's one which has a lot of insider jokes that I don't get).

If I have to be honest I agree with "Anime Girl Lizzy". It's her right to stop reading if she doesn't like it, and it's also her right to express that thought. That's not blackmail, because if the artist succumbs to that, that's the artist's choice.

But on the other hand, my favorite part of the little VE I've read were the stick figures, so obviously I'm not taking this thing seeeeeeeriously enough to actually care about the wank.

I went there for the wank, but got caught up in the story instead (oops!) Can I just say, I loved it when the therapist sat back and let the Evol Little Brother fix himself!

As for the kerfluffle itself, I am firmly in the "Don't Like, Don't Read" camp and always will be...but if everyone did that, then F_W might dry up for lack of wank, so maybe it's better that things continue as they are....

It was wank that led me there as well and I got sucked in.

Heee... Richie and the therapist was one of those gold moments.

Hee heee....I know! It's a truly beautiful thing:

"I'm not going to pity that jerk. I know I'm the one who needs help."
"So, how can I help you?"
"ME??! I don't need help!"
"But didn't you say..."
"Don't put words in my mouth!"
His own words, of course, and he put them there, but try and tell HIM that!

Don't we all know at least one person like that...and many of them well over the age of 13, alas....

Still not as angsty as Lean On Me was. Ergo I keep reading.

Yelling about unpalatable plot changes = k.
Yelling about unpalatable plot changes you were warned about .. not so k.

Another case of 'came for the wank, stayed for the story', here. Coolness.
