That's what Brian Boitano'd do!
Over on the Overclocked Remix forums, ArgonX decides to be an activist. Not just any activist, but an activist in the most worthy cause to get SquareEnix to make "Chrono Break", a supposed threequel to "Chrono Trigger" which never really existed outside of a stagnant copyright claim from back in 2001.

How does he plan on making this happen, you ask? Why, he's set up an online petition! It's worth noting that his online petition vehicle is not in fact PetitionOnline, but Live March.com, which basically creates a mailing list of sorts to spam the protestee of choice with phone calls, faxes, and e-mails. Because that's not obnoxious in the least.

Guess what his fellow forumites think? Come on, guess!

ArgonX: "This is not just a petition. Every person who decides that they wish to support the movement is to call Kyoko Yamashita, the Marketing Communications Manager of Square-Enix, and let her know that we want another installment of the Chrono series. If we have numerous amounts of people join the movement, we can get publicized in media outlets all over the United States and hopefully gain the attention of Square-Enix."

HamsterCorp: "I hope this person you're calling speaks English."
Tristor Trucido: "I hope they don't."

Edgecrusher: "Online petition you say? SURELY THAT WILL WORK!"

ArgonX: "If you read the my first post, it says everything you need to know. Check the site and find out more about it. It's not that hard. One phone call on one day, it's not hard is it?

You make one phone call on a certain day, at a certain time, to a certain place. Hundreds of people doing that is going to make a difference. You just have to get past skepticism and believe."

Pacotheparrot: "Unlike the other people that have comented in this thread I think we can do this. Power to the people man. Square is losing a truck full of money not making a quality Chrono Trigger Squeal. What the heck what have we got to lose by doing this. BTw you should make this into a chain email and post it on other boards."

Clydefrog: "Well, think of it this way.

In two years, you can look back and say, 'boy, I was young and full of foolish hopes.'"

Zergonaleash: " dunno what to think, but really would love another Chrono

But if i was to sign up for this i surely wouldn't tell anyone here, as i would get slaughtered with comments about me being stupid and childish"

And much more!

Personally, it doesn't really matter to me whether SquareEnix does anything about "Chrono Break". I just want them to explain what the hell was going on in "Chrono Cross" past the first hour or so.

*sheepish* I haven't gotten to FFX-2 yet. But I think you just gave me incentive to finish FFX.

Well, that was an image I really, really didn't need.

It's been a while ;)

Marle seemed like the squealing sort - she gets my vote.

Oh, how I hated her. Almost stopped playing the game 10 minutes in because I was quite happy she'd vanished into thin air and was not at all interested in rescuing her.

As a fan of both Chrono Cross and Chrono Trigger, I wouldn't mind seeing a third one. That said, pretty damn sure its never going to happen.

Sadly. Those were incredible games. Interesting concepts, good stories, and excellent replay value. Much as I love the Final Fantasy series, they certainly don't have the same replay level as Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross.

Now I want to play those games, and I don't have my PSX with me. Blah.

If you liked the Chrono series, try Lunar Silver Star. They released a revamped version for the Playstation that is just incredible. I remember playing the original on Sega CD, and the changes they've made in animation and such are just wonderful.

Ah! I've heard of Lunar. Never played any version of it, though. As soon as I can get my grubby little paws back on my PSX, I'll have to round up a copy. I'm always on the prowl for good games. I tend to stick to RPGs for the most part, and there are some serious stinkers out there.

Love rpg's myself (the only games I play, really), and I agree, there are some absolute horrid ones out there.

Lunar Silver Star: The Complete Story is the full title of it. You may have trouble finding it, as it was one of those games that was a special edition, and not many copies go up for resale, or are available brand new. I found mine used for $30 at the local Game Stop, but new copies were going for $70 last I knew. Its a 2 disc game, and it also includes a "Making of" disc and a soundtrak disc, so its not bad for the prices.

Another good one, and I am not sure if this was released on Playstation, is Shining Force.

I personally prefer the squel to Lunar, Lunar: Eternal Blue.

I felt it had a better storyline than the first Lunar.

Both are good games and worth looking into, but they may be hard to find.

[I remember having to wait for the stars to align properly so Working Designs could finally released Lunar:SSS...]

Eternal Blue was also awesome. Did they release it on the Playstation, or did it never make it off Sega CD?

It has a PS release but was never hyped to the degree that Lunar:SSS was.

Shining Force is very much alike in gameplay to Lunar and the earlier Final Fantasy games. Storyline is pretty decent from what I can remember, and it provides a decent amount of challenge for the jaded rpg gamer. You will only find it on the old Sega CD system, or on the Gameboy Advance.

I second the Lunar recommendation!

I don't think you can find the Limited Edition in stores anymore unless you're an extremely lucky secondhand store surfer or an eBay sniper, but the "Fan Edition" (complete with shitty fanart on the CDs) should still be kicking around.

There's actually an awesome used-game store in my hometown that just might have it. I've never had trouble getting a game through there. The store is a dream. It has better success getting games than most stores I've seen. Which is surprising, considering that my hometown is fairly small and in the middle of nowhere. I'll have to give the owner a call. All of the rave on this thread has got me intrigued.

Ah, this reminds me of the Sam and Max 2 cancellation frothing. Those guys knew how to get out the vote--in addition to the online petition, e-mail frenzy, and open weeping, they got an honest to god real life picket line going outside E3 with custom t-shirts and everything.

...and you know, still, nobody gave a shit. Funny that.

Ah, I remember that... I kind of wanted a sequel to Sam and Max too, but I'd rather have no game at all than a shitty game thrown together to appease fans because look what George Lucas did to Star Wars wankwankwank.

But they actually marched in the streets outside of E3? Dude, that's just... sad.

(First off, your post title rules.)

Good Fucking God. Does this person honestly think that Square-Enix doesn't realize how many rabid Chrono-series fans are out there? I mean, shit, it's not like the company has highly-paid marketing teams or anything, and they certainly don't know how to market a phenomenally successful game franchise.

Can I slam his head into a desk, Arcy?

[info]dawnswalker

NO!!!! Everyone knows that SquareEnix has a magical vault in which they keep all the games for which the fans have been begging for years! The PS2 remakes of the "old school" Final Fantasies, the N64 sequel to FFVI that was shown in demo form way back when the system was called Ultra 64, the English translation of Seiken Densetsu 3, the Dragon Quest game with 3D graphics and five hundred hours of voice acting, and Chrono Break! They're all there, and SquareEnix is refusing to give them to us!!!

... Anyway, you don't really need my permission to start slamming heads into desks, do you? Just go for it!

I think it's rather clear by my current icon set where my Squaresoft/SquareEnix loyalty lies. (Why yes, I have no taste, thanks for asking!) Therefore, I couldn't bring myself to care if they finally did make Chrono Break and release it on the PAL market.

That said... dood. After that, I'm almost hoping that SquareEnix does make Chrono Break, and it turns out to be an extremely bad game. Almost.
