They use big words! Somebody help!
It appears to have started in Glossing</>'s journal as a discussion about the lj community cracktrailer and then spread out in locked and unlocked posts such as this all over my friendslist and beyond with cryptic polysyllabic discussions and race and academia and - there's bound to be a Nazi somewhere in there.

Could someone please tell the rest of us wtf they're on about?

I've seen some of it. First there was the Better Buffy Fics kerfluffle regarding slash and fetish. Then it seems it moved on to cracktrailer and Othering, and now it's about racism.

The hows and whyfores beat me. But it looks serious. Nothing I wanna point and laugh at. I can collect some links if anyone wants to read more about it.

5) "comprador" incident, or the racism debate

I can only guess from the bits and pieces I gathered that [info]glossing changed her user info to include the term "comprador" (look it up) in a way. I don’t know when that happened because I was asleep. It’s gone now, though. This is connected to [info]ros_fod somehow, I guess.

People took offence and argued in locked posts that it was a derogatory term, and in turn accused Glossing of being a racist. At least that’s what I think happened.

In comments to the below post people tell Glossing to think before she throws around words like that, and that she should stop whining and accept the consequences of her action. Or something.
It’s all very strange, and complicated, and my head hurts now.

I'm wondering if there's a historical or sociological context - in the way that someone being a Republican in America is a totally different meaning from being a Republican in Northern Ireland, for instance.

Short summary: Buffy fandom is on the rag this week. Long summary: the PMS has been building for a while, it's happening on several semi-related and a few unrelated fronts, the links above are a good tip of the iceberg summary but half of it is buried in friendslocked posts, shifting fannish alliances, and mountains of shit that would bore you silly before you got to the parts that would make sense.

I think they're saying that if you write slash about trailer trash, then you need to be careful, since the trailer trash aren't on the internet to write their own slash, and therefore might get misrepresented.

I don't think it's the big words that makes it not make sense.

You know, what I find funny is the liberal rich white academic crusader-for-truth-and-Howard-Dean notion that the trailer trash can't defend themselves. It's just as much a form of paternalism/othering/disempowerment as everything they rail about. Maybe more so.

Guys, everyone has internet access and enough free time to write fanfic these days, pretty much. You know, all that stuff about Wal*Mart being the biggest PC retailer in the country? The rise of the $200 internet-ready PC? The near saturation of computers and net access even in rural areas? (Okay, near saturation for computers, and 'getting there' for net access.)

But, you know, anyone whose field of study is such that they can write about 'priviledge' with a straight face is pretty much contractually obligated to be out of touch with on-the-ground reality. Except economists, who mostly don't bother, and come to think of it aren't that down with the hard facts either.

Oh, I guess this is just the fault of the calculus ONCE AGAIN. Damn you, Newton and/or Leibniz!
