I'm in the same boat as you are. I know that both both Relena and Rinoa are widely loathed throughout their fandoms, and I don't even know why. (Well, okay, maybe I do know why-- their psychotic anti-fans seem to think they're the main reason there ain't no hot, gay lovin' in their respective canons.)

But... seriously... I don't think either Relena or Rinoa are as evil as they're commonly said to be. Relena started out as a superficial socialite twit... and gradually changed into a mature, daring heroine as the series went on. Rinoa started out as a superficial socialite twit (are you starting to spot a pattern here?) who gradually changed into a more-serious, self-assured heroine as the video game went on. It's almost as though almost every fan-girl in their fandom fixates on a first impression and just cannot let go of it.

Fandoms of the world*, take note: characters can actually evolve throughout a series. No matter how awful they are when they start out, they can and do mature into someone more loveable at the end of the series. And it's more than okay to note that change and embrace it-- since more likely than not, you will (or HAVE) experienced it yourself at some point.

*And a special shout-out goes out to the rabid fen of the HP kingdom who appear to think James Potter grew up to be a psychotic rapist/murderer/puppy-kicker. I... don't even know what to say to that one.

Anyway, as the whole "hated character" thing...I don't completely like Rinoa. I think Squall/Rinoa is sickeningly sweet (I admit, I cried at the end when she made Squall smile), but that doesn't mean I don't toss Screwbuddy Leonhart into everyone else's bed too. Save Selphie. Ugh.

As for Relena, well...I was one of those that was shouting "DO IT, HEERO!" when she was screaming for him to come back and kill her. Now that I think about Endless Waltz, though...she didn't seem so bad. She seems doomed to play the helpless hostage, but at least she still tried to talk some sense into Mariemeia (sp?). Doesn't mean I don't still dig on Noin and Une a helluva lot harder, though. OZ rocks! XD

See, I have character reasons for not liking the girls, not because they "get in the way of canon buttsex". That's just stupid.

I love some of the alternative captions people are coming up with here, ones that don't diss on Rinoa as a "twat" or "slut." It'd be nice if the pic were re-captioned and posted to the yaoi comm. Just to counteract the "original" (already a bastardization of the real artist's situation, tho') and show that female characters don't exist to get in the way of a guy/guy relationship -- show that they can ENABLE the relationship, even.

Personally I didn't hate Rinoa; I did hate the Squall/Rinoa relationship, not for its heterosexuality but for popping up practically out of nowhere at all 'round disc 3 or so; seriously, Squall's personality just did a complete 180 for no real reason, as I recall, which only further cemented my loathing for the way RPGs find it absolutely necessary to shove a trite romance subplot down our throats. (Hey, remember how FF3/6 was good? a spoonful of subtlety helps the subplots go down!) ... But whatever, it's been a very long time since I played it.

When Relena annoyed me it was for her role more than her personality or her vagina; you know, the politician preaching her willingness to fight and sacrifice and whatever for her ideal, when all she really does is give impassioned speeches while everyone else is out there doing the actual fighting for her. S'just the way the world works, though, and she was a fairly admirable woman. ... It's been years since I've seen GW, too. (For what it's worth, I approached GW without having touched the fandom at all. Trowa/Quatre were exquisitely gaygaygay, but that was pretty much the only yaoi pairing I saw in the entire thing. Afterward I was utterly boggled by the 1x2x1 thing, the frequent bizarre fanontastic characterisation, and abundant purple prose coming from DUO AND HEERO (just... dude.)

Bah, well, since Martina (tini!)and Zangulus both were OC to the anime only (am I right?), I suppose it was alright for the animatators to do whatever the hell they wanted to do with them. Though the shipping was kinda sudden (is there even a fandom for them?). I'm still disappointed that there wasn't more on the L/G side. Two years ago I bought the Japanese 8th graphic novel, and it looks like within another year or so, it'll be translated in English here.

Also, I still don't see the Z/A shipping, but then again, I'm fond of the "coldhearted swordsman" just being by himself kinda like Sasuke from Naruto...

DAMMIT! I just want to know what is going on besides the whole LON issue!
