F_W. We mock. That's it.
Over the last day or so, as I've watched all this, the same thought has kept occuring to me.

"Hey, guys. You DO realise that if all this fallout was going on over a HP message board, we'd be sitting there and mocking and telling the people involved to get a life. Right?"

Because that's what F_W's about. We mock people who are too involved in their fandom, right?

And, sure, it went down. But it's been down before and we trucked on. Within hours, we had a backup comm. Within a few more, we had F_W proper back. But you'd still think that the world had ended in the meantime, or that this was the most important thing in the world. If you need more proof that people are taking all of this too seriously, there you go.

I think it was more the fact that it seemed petty and for awhile some of us though it been hacked. And eh I don't find it funny when it happens on other boards (ie someone taking over shuting out other mods and such), becuase having run a board before I've had it happen to me.

Not to many people were saying omg we're going to die, it was more like the fact that everyone was going WTF aren't we supposed to be above this crap?

Just a thought.

I spent most of yesterday obsessively checking JF to see what new wacky shit had come up in this debate, and then resisting the urge to write up a giant entry for FW where I got all the links and was like, "OMG, teh wankiness!" Because laze always wins, folks.

One problem here is that self-moderation doesn't work when a large majority doesn't grok (or care to understand) what the community's supposed to be.

TOS'ings always brought about self-examination-- questioning the purpose of the community, and why it was worth following from server to server.

I think the accusations of elitism on FW are kind of missing the point. For a community to work, there has to be a group elan that each member wants to be a part of. That means respecting and admiring other people in the group, particularly those who tune in best to the spirit of the community.

I'm not talking about the chummy in-groups or sekrit elitist comms. I'm just talking about wankas who make the comm what it is. Lawd knows I have had conflicts with [info]sagralisse, but to a certain degree that just doesn't matter when it comes to FW, because she is one of the people who has consistently set the tone for what this community is. When we had the FW Deathmatch, it was a big joke, sure, but I was really proud that [info]phosfate won, because I see her as a constellation here at FW-- someone you can look to, to get your bearings. She's always funny, she always seems to be here to have a good time and share the humor with other wankas, and as part of FW, you can aspire to be that consistently funny, snarky, and bitchy yet good-natured.

Surely just the concept of mocking fandom wouldn't be so compelling if you didn't look at the collective energy of FW and see things that distinguish the community-- the whole Fandom is Fucking Funny thing, snark, self-admissions of wank whenever members engage in wankery of their own, taking nothing very seriously, pointing and laughing, prizing a sense of humor above everything else-- those things are created by other members of the comm, and why would you be here unless you want to be a part of those things? But in the past few months we've had a whole lot of pointing and not so much with the laughing. And lately there's barely been any pointing. Frequently, a topic doesn't get wanked and mocked, it just gets brought to the table here so that people can discuss it and/or wank over it themselves.

If that's what the majority of you guys all want to do, then that's where the community is heading, and fine; a community becomes what its active members make it. That's natural and inevitable. But I think some consciousness of the changes, and some questioning of the direction, is a good thing.

I had my own ideas about attempting to make this point about the direction of FW, and the FW mods had theirs. But let's not lose sight of the point, because it's just about all we can salvage now.

So, I've spend a lot of time defending the purpose and direction of fw at various times. Defending its usefulness and that it does have a place in the community. Saying that it wasn't run by some sort of cabal, that all could come and play.

Guess that I was a deluded ass, then. The secret cabal didn't like the n00bs coming to play, and therefore exercised their mighty power.

IMO, the wankers in this situation weren't the people, like me for instance, who were sitting around and saying Whaaaaaaaa?! and Ah, I'll miss that weird old place, it was a fun way to kill time and laugh! Can't wait to see where it starts up again! (and I don't think those people, by the way, were really trying to jump out windows because OMG! nO reezon 2 LiVe!!1) I think the wank came from the people who deleted the community, with no warning, to "teach us a lesson!" about, apparently, how much we all suck and how much the community has sucked in the last few months.

Would it have killed them to write up an explanation about WHY they wanted to delete the comm BEFORE they deleted it? And I do mean a POLITE explanation, not the insult they posted on fandom_rant.

It all would've been so different with a polite message saying something along the lines of 'hey, we think things are heating up in this place, let's cool off for a week and see what happens then.'

Really, was that SO difficult? All they ever did was re-stir the wank. I mean...really! Come on! A polite explanation, that's all that it would've taken.

But no. You had to turn it into a power-trip.

Worse, it's not about Fandom Wank at all.

For a long time I believed FW had no fandom politics. But suddenly, these BNW started bringing it front-and-center and I said "What? Where did THIS come from?" And even then I really couldn't give a damn.

But now I'm forced to give a damn, and not by choice. To me, this is about a bunch of elitists in their clubhouse that suddenly found themselves overwhelmed by new people and went in a mad bid to regain 'power'.

It's not about the 'quality of the wank'. I saw no difference before and after Crystalwank, but for some reason, this people started claiming that it was all going to hell. Bullshit. You just felt threatened by the new guys. People whom you didn't know. People that overwhelmed the old skool and thus were declared the eval.

I heard cries of the eval meta, but dude... YOU PEOPLE were the ones to bring the meta into the house. NOBODY gave a damn about fandom politics until YOU PEOPLE started to bring it up. There were no cries of bad quality until YOU PEOPLE started to whine about it. Like a witch-hunt, suddenly EVERYONE was a n00b.

It's not about n00bs. This is about elitits feeling threatened and holding on to the throne like a lifesaver.

So WTF, mate?

FW mods and sekrit tribe memebers: You. Screwed. Up. Just stop trying to rationalize it and admit it. You just wanted revenge for imaginary crimes and you dropped the ball. If you had been polite about it, none of this would've happened. But no. You had to go all 007 on FW. Fine. Now you have to deal with it. You've become the new uberwankers of FW. Congrats. Sweet mother of god, are we done yet pointing fingers and going "you are taking this too seriously!!" "No YOU are taking this too seriously!!" and pointing at the mods, the noobs, the regs, people of the street, the internet itself, WHATEVER.

Can we just admit that this self-proclaimed "experiment" went HORRIBLY WRONG and try to just learn something from the experience and move on?? Because this trying to prove the mods had a plan/point/did nothing wrong is getting entirely too tiresome. It's a big community, there are a lot of mods, mistakes happen! There are about ten different explanations of why the community was deleted and most blatantly contradict each other so let's just FORGET IT!

First thing first, try to understand that whatever I'm going to say now is just something that is honest and free of snark/malice/smileys or anything at might annoy you. This is not an attack. It is merely an observation and I hope that we would actually have a decent conversation going because there are certain points in your post that I felt needed to be addressed and questioned for me to gain a better understanding of the situation at hand and perhaps, if you wish, for you to understand my POV.

I'm sorry, but this statement seemed to be thoroughly in contradiction to what I've seen in the past couple of days. First of all, the former sentence seem to imply that it is necessary to affiliate yourself with any one "group" in an attempt to gain their friendship in order to be accepted in f_w. I do not agree with this idea of "wanting to
be a part of a group" for the better of the community because there is nothing worse than to see only one opinion dictated by one particular group who would then proceed to ridicule anyone else who happens to differ in opinion.

The "true essense" of f_w in my opinion (and I hope I am entitled to one since I have been with this community since November last year, as a lurker then and as a member in January this year) is the ability to take things with a pinch of salt. To laugh at everything and to not take snarks to heart and to move on. I haven't seen this of late.

(Please bear with me, I'm not as good an English speaker as I'd like to be.)

First off, my paranoid-o-graph assures me I am one of the n00bs who sucked cock and made F_W bad and, in general, pissed everyone off. I got my code while in the middle of Crystalwank, so, around the time all the n00bs did. Also, I am not friends with anyone here, and so I don't know the sekrit rules, I have had to figure them out from reading/reactions/etc.

I found F_W around the time Not-Bob appeared (December/January?). I lurked, read everything, when I had a few hours to kill I read through the calendar. I knew a lot of the inside jokes, and I also knew the source of them. Beaded pony, "Okay!", you make the baby Jesus cry, the mean girls in high school, won't somebody think of ___, they think of you naked!, etc. I was content just lurking. But when Crystalwank I got a code because I wanted to have an account. I wasn't sure what for, but hey, at least I didn't have to check every community, and I could store my bitchiest icons somewhere.

I haven't been blessed with the gift of the funny and I'll admit it right now. Also, I can be pretty awkward if I feel inadequate (and I do because I have had so much fun here that I don't want my presence to take away from the funny). When I posted my first wank, I replied to about every comment. I found out yesterday reading [info]cleolinda's JF that that is a faux pas here. I also made jokes that were not funny, etc. x_x

So, really, what I want to say is that I'm probably one of those n00bs, but that doesn't mean we don't know or respect the old-time wankers. That doesn't mean I haven't noticed how lately F_W is not the same. With the phoenix incident, I was not only bored, but pissed, because this troll not only wasn't funny, but consistently took away from the funny jokes people managed to make. I didn't like we_wank (and I have nothing against [info]llama_treats because I hadn't noticed him/her in a good or bad way up until the creation), but I didn't say anything because I didn't think I could crack a good joke out of it. About [info]mockitymock I say what I said then, if I could just watch the funny mocking while I stood quiet in the corner, I would do so because that's what I came here for. I don't wank to take sides, because I don't have any reason to do so. As I've said, I'm not friends with anyone here, so it's easier to keep a cold head about everything that goes on.

I didn't know anything about the deletion and while I didn't find it funny, I think I might have further down the road, with some more clues "lyke leaked onto teh press OMG". I was worried because for some reason no one had access to the account validated for the [info]brad account (that seriously made me go WTF and back, I mean, I've managed LJ communities and all my mods have had their email addresses validated for the mod account so if something happens, they can kiss it good again), and I thought that the archives would be lost forever. And since I had noticed the increasing wankiness of F_W, I didn't want to lose the archives where all the good mocking was!! :P

I respect and understand the decision of the mods. I also see ZR's point, if she wasn't properly informed I can see why she would undelete F_W, especially if everyone was acting as if it was the action of a rogue mod. And I don't think the situation is comparable to Brad undeleting a random community in LJ. For one, ZR is constantly defending F_W against each and every TOS complaint. Besides all the other points she's brought up elsewhere.

I think some good might have come out of the whoke joke if we'd have gone through with it, everyone was properly informed, and if by the end, everyone would have known it was a joke. Because, otherwise, it's pretty shitty to manipulate and lie to people like that. Even if they're clueless.

I hope F_W becomes funny again and I come here and laugh instead of froth at the mouth because of all the fucking politics. I know I haven't made much sense and that this is more of a rant than anything else... HEY!! Something is going on at Nocturne Alley! *wanders off*
