I guess we like them big and stupid?
after reading--no, skimming-- over ONE single boybandslash fic, shell has discovered the real reason they read/write/like the stuff:

"I think it's that these are big, dumb boys. As in stupid and clueless."

nice to know that an entire fandom can be so neatly summed up and dismissed under the guise of "provoking discussion."

And you never said something you later realized was tactless? Which you then clarified, and invited discussion on?

I should clarify myself - I'm not shell, but I do respect her. She usually has good things to say, I think she just posted without thinking.

She says "big, dumb, clueless pretty boys" like it's a bad thing.

I read it like she was saying it was a good thing -- or not a thing at all. But I like her ideas and think they're valid.

Of course, I find no appeal whatsoever in the sparkly side of the force. I kind of like scruffy cowboys, myself. But eh, to each his own.

I'm lucky I didn't get wanked for the rant I posted on the sparkly ones. Hehehe - talk about offending. But then again, people do get offended a little easily when other people don't get their obsession.

As someone who soooo doesn't get the appeal of the boybands and finds them downright annoying and musically offensive, I guess I'm not a good one to talk on this subject.

*whispers* I actually liked what she had to say too, and I'm a boyband fan.

[Church Lady voice] Their gyrating buttocks, like the sinful bulbous orbs that they are, WILL hypnotize you! [/CLv]

I agree that they all suck except for N*Sync, who, when taken away from their craptastic musical arrangements and soul-sucking vapid pop songs, can really, really sing. I've heard them do entire segments in five part harmony a capella and they were absolutely flawless (see the Tarzan soundtrack put out by Disney, where they do an a capella doowop number, complete with scatting and jazz notes and everything. Very impressive.) But yes, they're certainly not on the top of the musical food chain.

It'd be fine if they were, or if she'd actually taken the time to look into the fandom instead of reading/skimming one story and coming up with conclusions from that alone.

We don't like them because of their dumbness, dammit! We like them because they somehow manage to look good in sequinned and bedazzled clothes and dodgy facial hair.

*cries*

why don't I have my "my fandom is not your fandom" icon uploaded over here?

Big? Since when? Has she ever seen them? The average height of boyband members is something like 5'8". The Irish ones are almost literally pocket-sized and I'm about the same size as two of the Backstreet Boys (and I'm not what anyone would consider big). I mean, I love them, but being nearly as tall as Eminem doesn't mean you're not short. Half of them are fucking midgets.

I was thinking the same thing. Howie is 5'6" for the love of Lance.

Mwa! That just made me snicker. He's so short that if any of them are actually shorter than he is I'd have to pity them .

Em is a tiny little man, and it shows, but you've got a lot of pitying to do. *g* He's supposed to be maybe 5'8", right? Because if he is, he's definitely taller than Howie, Brian and Stephen Gately and most likely Chris, Mikey Graham and Ronan Keating as well. (Ronan says he's 5'9" or 10". If he's 5'10" then I'm a seven foot tall transvestive from Wyoming with a very nice bridge I'd like to sell.) Lance and AJ might be a bit taller, but it wouldn't be much.

I blame some of this knowledge on photomanips - knowing that Lance and AJ are about the same height can be very handy. The rest is just because it heartily amuses me. The idea that people have actually contemplated Wade/Howie, for instance. Compared to Howie, Wade is geography.

Well now... I've heard some interesting things about boyband slash, but that's just bizarre.... ;)

The funny part is, given the to-boldly-go attitude to kinks in the fandom, someone's probably written it.

Or at least thought about it really hard. *g*

Meh, I think it's more foot-in-mouthy than wanky. She came up with a hypothesis too quickly and posted without thinking it through in regards to potential-to-offend. But she retracted it promptly once its resonances were pointed out to her.

Maybe she really meant to write:

I think it's that these are big, dumb boys. As in hot and horny, and she just got confused.

I've got to admit, I've never run across to many fics where brains figure highly in the story. And, you know, big could refer to one particular physical attribute.

Or maybe I'm just hanging out in the wrong section of Boyband fic....

Speaking as a woman who actually attended a New Kids On The Block concert as a teenager (*cringe*), I hereby strike a blow for all those who liked em' fairly petite and actively physical! And who didn't care one way or another if they had a brain in their head!

And yes, that was the last time I was anywhere close to boyband fandom, unless you count watching an episode or two of Building The Band out of morbid curiosity. So this is a really random comment by someone with next to no clue about sparkly fandoms. So there! Haha!

And I thought it was an interesting hypothesis, even if it was wild speculation, and in terms that might have been offensive. First impressions are often wrong, but they are interesting nonetheless.
