Never bring up two things in conversation: politics or Harry Potter.
The Leaky Cauldron makes a post about Bill Clinton being compared to Harry Potter in the media. I'm sure this causes many to react immediately with a bewildered cry of "What you talkin' 'bout, Willis?!" I expressed the same sentiment myself, in fact.

Turns out the comparison is primarily based upon the only thing that the two have in common: really impressive book sales. For those not in the know: Clinton's autobiography, My Life, has enjoyed a sales frenzy that rivals that of Order of the Phoenix. Any other similarities between the two are being declared by snarky reporters trying to stab at the public's easily pushed buttons. As far as I know, Clinton has never called himself the "Potter of presidents", as the tongue-in-cheek article linked to in TLC's post sarcastically nicknames him.

The way TLC presents the story, as if the comparison were being made seriously and not snarkily, creates a deluge of hybrid Potter/Political wank in the comments, most of them in the vein of "OMGWTF?!" and "How dare you besmirch the sacred name of the Virgin Harry!" Conservatives do battle with the twisted logic of the American Liberal, and arguments erupt over whether Clinton=Voldemort, Bush=Voldemort, or Cheney=Voldemort and Dubya=Wormtail.

Inevitably somebody says, "Great. I guess to you the flag is just a piece of fabric. God Bless the USA!" and it all goes to potterpolitiwank soapbox hell from there.

ETA: Changed the format, becuz paragrafs r goood.

If he's Harry, would that make Bob Dole Draco? Cause yeah, scary thought.

I think Dubya would be Draco: rich, prestigious family with a history in Slytherin the Republican Party, kind of a bully, huge Daddy Issues (George Bush I = Lucius!).

Dick Cheney = Voldemort
Laura Bush = Pansy
Condi = Millicent Bulstrode
Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz = Crabb and Goyle
Colin Powell = Snape (because no one really knows what his deal is.)

I think both sides can be equally illogical, but conservatives are more likely to bludgeon you to death with a flag on a pole while yelling,"LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT! GOD BLESS THE USA!", which is at least a good way out of having to win an argument.

Anyway, the thing that makes this poliwank enjoyable for me is possibility it brings for the creation of various White House/HP crossover fics.

Flag wank always cracks me up. Why don't people ever bitch about patriots with crappy flag etiquette--the ones who leave the flag up all the time, who don't fold it properly, or who let it touch the ground, or display it improperly on their cars--or who wear it on their clothing? And don't even get me started on those "patriotic" flag-patterned doggie chew toys I saw at Petco the other week. Apparently, nothing says "I love my country" like letting your dog drool on the flag.

The comparison of Clinton to O.J. Simpson is accurate, however, I would add one more: both are narcissistic sociopaths. The only difference is that O.J. killed two people violently in person. Clinton did his killing (Bosnian Serbs) as a Wag The Dog thing through others. Sad, really.

Ok, and as to the anonymous poster who made the comparisons, "Who did ... Bush!" Out of curiosity, where did you get the information you posted?? If it was from Michael Moore's new movie, I would take all of that with a very large block of salt. He is known to outright lie in his propaganda films, billed as "documentaries," so sift out the things you say if you are pulling from that source. If not, I am genuinely curious to hear where the information comes from.

How many Jurisimprudence laws is this breaking? First to guess the correct number wins a knife autographed by O.J. himself!
