i made a lord of the rings movie first, and then peter jackson copied me!
(link/quote cross-posted to my lj.)

ralph bakshi, the big fanboy, wanks on the whole idea-stealing thing.

"I wasn't contacted, I wasn't asked for the rights to do it, let's just put it that way. I wasn't asked for the rights to do it, no one's ever spoken to me about it. I'm kind of stunned that they are doing it."...

He also believes that his visualizations of the Tolkien characters are a part of the public consciousness, but that he doesn't get the credit that he feels he deserves. "Understand that I'm not bitching here, this is very important to me. But when you look at (the new film's) Ringwraiths flying through the forests, it's like a scene out of my movie."

apparently he's miffed because of all the hard work he put into his worse-than-mediocre cartoon, like talking to tolkien's children, and taking a walk where tolkien lived. and imagine, he had to rip off image-concepts created by the world-renowned tolkien artists who jackson hired (although unfortunately not enough of them to make the thing look very good) without the artists' assistance! that took called for talent!

If I didn't ALREADY think Bakshi blows...OH GEE WAIT, he didn't even DO the entire trilogy, he just ripped off Rankin & Bass who themselves also blow, except maybe for Thundercats. Better and better.

Gasp! Don't knock Rankin Bass! They're the ones who came up with that cool song "Where there's a whip...waKOW!...there's a way!"

And their Gollum gave me nightmares.

It's almost like a scene out of the original source material that you all worked from!

And, he adds, "I'm anxiously waiting to see what these guys do with my movie! Ha ha ha ha ! Quote me! Do me a favour and quote me on that."

Did anyone else think Dr Robotnic-style evil laughing there?

Okay, I looked at Bakshi's imdb.com page to figure out which animated version he did and came across this quote from someone reviewing the film-it's long but it's worth it.

But while Bakshi was and remains guiltless, Jackson has blood on his hands. He has murdered Tolkein's book. Bakshi left open the possibility that the book was a great work of literature (which it is). Jackson has convinced people that if you read the books you'll get, in literary form, the kind of thing he's served up on screen - and he's even convinced people who had already read the books and ought to have known better, which means he's made it much harder for I don't know how many millions of people to appreciate the books for what they are. As a film, Bakshi's effort is mediocre, but it won't prevent you from understanding Tolkein's novel: a fable about absolute power corrupting absolutely, a solidly grounded adventure story, a valuable and moving reminder of the beauty of the natural world, a meditation on loss and death. Bakshi's mediocre film gets little of this across but at least he doesn't rule any of it out.

What the fuck? If you like Peter Jackson's movie, I guess you can't like the books too. Okay.

how does pj's version fail to convey that absolute power corrupts absolutely, to remind of the beauty of nature, or to meditate on loss and death? and when did it become something other than an adventure story? i'm not saying it's PERFECT or that a criticism is invalid, but geez, wouldn't it be a little hard to miss any of those things?

Two things:

One, I don't believe that was a part of his master plan so no, I don't buy that.

And two, anyone on this earth who has EVER seen a movie adaptation of a book and expected that they would be the same --- deserves to be hit with a wet noodle.

Jesus this guy is still alive? I thought he died ten years ago!

It's nice to see he's not bitter about the fact that PJ LotR kicked ass and his sucks donkey balls.

I had no idea the Ralph Baskshi was Tolkien reincarnated, nor did I have any idea that things that HAPPENED IN THE BOOK were his idea as well.

Are Frodo, Sam and Legolas his characters as well?

Bakshi is a time lord. He wrote the book, produced all the film versions and personally orchestrated the Domlijah phenomenon.

He currently denies having anything to do with the Nimoy monstrosity, but we have our doubts...

Back in the day, my brother and I were absolutely friggin' traumatized by that movie. Gollum scared him (he called him "that froggy thing") and I was completely freaked out by the hobbits' hairy, scary feet.

I almost skipped the PJ version due to the horror of the hobbits' feet.

It's a bloody good thing PJ didn't ask him for advice, or Sam would have been played by some Cockney relative of Peter Lorre and Merry and Pippin by the Doublemint twins.
