I'm not homophobic; I'm just homophobic towards Harry Potter.
FictionAlley gets trolled by an anti-slasher, and everyone is riled up. Harry Potter is one of the wankiest fandoms, after all...

"Unregestered" (who later turns into psu199), makes a post, about how "any level of homosexuality from the main characters would be sufficantly traumatic for a child that one might want to consider rating all of those fictions R." Everyone disagrees very, very vehemently, obviously. Didn't read the whole thing OMG SO FUCKING BORING, just skimmed. Can't link to particular posts in the thread, so here...

Some quotes I liked from the opposing side.

"you should probably go live in a cave somewhere."

"Shame on you!"

"I think what disgusts me most about a suggestion like this is that, like aerynalexander mentioned, it reminds me of the policy of segregation."

"I am thirteen years of age. Contrary to popular opinion, I am an educated, open-minded young woman."

There's the ironic anti-het post.

"Hi, xcuse me, can we plz make a section on F.A. for heter0 fic, bcos i find it offensive & i think we'd all feel better+safer if it was put somewhere else! plus dont u know all that girlboy kissing+touching is GROSS? i wish u'd put warnings on these yuck things so us who dont want 2 read badly ritten porn can avoid it!

kthxbai"

"I'm shaking my head at you."

"Fandom is like rehab for homophobes."

"I honestly don't see how my PG Harry/Draco fic is more traumatic than someone else's PG Harry/Ginny fic"

"I learned about sex from my parents when I was 9."

"You really shouldn't be pushing your prejudiced subjects like that around here. This site is about Harry Potter, and Harry Potter is about acceptance of all people." I think not, what about the racism against muggles?

"(could you ever discuss sex with a parent as a teen?)"

"I want to let you know that slash - both writings and discussions - have opened my eyes."

"warning labels are an insult."

"Did you ever stop to think that a child unsure of their sexual feelings might be relieved to read about a gay character"

"I hope that one day we will all co-exist peacefully in the wonderful Harry Potter Universe J.K. Rowling has given us."

"FA does not contain pornography." Just lots of graphic sex smut scenes.

"I don't like slash, and I'm proud to admit it!" ...someone doesn't know how to oppose vehemently very well.

"*wishing some people would put het warnings on fics*"

Then, some stuff from psu199

"I was trying to write my suggestion in an open minded way"

"I do say "Eww Gross" when I see Draco kissing Harry, I say the exact same thing when it's Draco kissing Hermione, or Ginny. Maybe we need a new section for Slytherin on Gryffindor romance?"

"Alrighty, after reading everyones comments, I'll make one more post, and shut up." And yet, s/h/it doesn't. But I mean, when do they ever?

"(A side note, if any Slashers want to make a story with Percy being gay with some previously unknown character, have at it. He's always been a little fruity in my book.)"

"I am obviously a racist, homophobic biggot. I have zero legitimate points" Oh you biggot, you.

"Am I homophobic in regards to the Harry Potter universe, maybe, but at least I can admit it."

"Heterosexuality is the norm in our society."

"Bob kisses Bill. Bob kisses Jane." I don't know why I like this quote, I just really, really do. One of the replies to this was "Bob can kiss whoever he darn well likes." I'm sure Bob will be glad to hear that.

"I don't know where I'm going with this."

"Whats so wrong with a hat?"

"some bizarre group of people who take some perverted pleasure in 'gaying up'"

"I do include myself in the category of the enlightened"

"So, there you have it. My attempt to be totally serious and address every concern people have raised"

"To clarify, it's not a "yuck a boy kissing a boy" yuck, it's a "yuck Ron kissing Harry" yuck."

***

It does turn rather boring at the end, and actually, it's not totally edge-of-your-seat type wank, but it's rather amusing in places.

I couldn't finish reading the quotes. I got there and died. And I think will continue dying for a good, long time.

Isn't that the equivalent to the Miss America speech?

"I want World Peace and love for all mankind."

I tell you what, they'll be selling ice scrapers in hell the day HP fandom co-exists peacefully.

Okay, I tried to read that thread (currently on page 3, I think my eyes may fall out) and the troll? Not that great. He doesn't even come off incredibly trollish to me, actually. A little bit clueless, but not THAT trollish.

The responses, however, are AMAZING. I'm about this close to starting up a drinking game for this...poster compares moving slash away from other fics to the segregation of blacks, one sip. Poster shows no apparent grasp of the idea that there's a difference between fictional GBLT people and real GBLT people, or the presence/absence of slash and gay rights, one sip.

They're all so up in arms and so VERY VERY SERIOUS about this. It's amazing.

Well, I don't entirely blame them - but it really isn't worth getting worked up over. FA is not going to change its hosting policies to segregate slash.

Even if you consider your fic to be PG, with just a bit of kissing or whatever, I think that any level of homosexuality from the main characters would be sufficantly traumatic for a child that one might want to consider rating all of those fictions R.

You know, with the exception of that, what the person was asking was necessarily a bad idea. Putting slash into a section would not only allow people to visit the side without running into slash, but it would also let those who did want to find slash to have it all in one place, easily located.

Though, you know, there doesn't seem to be any gay characters in Harry Potter. Then again, Ms. Rowling has some cross-breeding in book four (Half-giants, part veelas) and heavily implied incest in book five (the pureblooded families), so perhaps we only have to wait a book or two.

I would imagine there are a significant number of readers who would love to be able to browse the slash (if I'm using that term correctly) fics exclusively. It could be just as helpful to them as it would be to the few people who may agree with me in my homophobia in regards to the Harry Potter universe.

Huh. It's very rare to see someone use the word homophobia self-referentially. But I guess if he can admit he's afraid of slash, more power to him.

I remember that way back when (internet time) most everyone who wrote slash on ff.n and some other archives I went to in the fandoms I read did rate all their slash stories NC-17, no matter how tame the actual fic was, to keep from getting flamed. Well, maybe not all, but it's much easier to remember all the times that I was terribly disappointed after clicking on a link expecting smut only to be disappointed when barely even kissed, if that, then it is to remember ones that were correctly rated.

It's a terrible time when I girl needs to dig through G-rated fics just to find her daily allowance of written porn. Let us all be glad we need never return to those days, no matter what certain people may want.

any level of homosexuality from the main characters would be sufficantly traumatic for a child that one might want to consider rating all of those fictions R

I was eleven when I started reading hardcore yaoi, and it certainly wasn't traumatic for me. Of course, I was seven or so when I first watched porn, six when I first read a smutty scene in one of my mom's books, and at most four the first time I snuck into my dad's drawer of porno magazines, so maybe I was just already so "traumatised" that I didn't even realise that more was being heaped on.

I think it would be a lot more traumatizing if Harry Potter fanficcers portrayed the characters as hating the kiddies' favorite bands.

"Britney Spears? She's such an ugly slut," Harry said, glaring at Draco. "And her clothes are gross."
