Space Cases fen go wild
[info]rigelianculture. A small, quiet community on Livejournal where fans of the old Nickelodeon sci-fi show Space Cases hang out and share art, fanfiction, and discuss anything related to the show.

One day, [info]sad_alice comes along with hopes to publish a Space Cases manga through Tokyopop with Peter David's (the creator of Space Cases) permission. She posts entry after entry about this within a few weeks, including a supposed letter from Peter David. After this, she posts sketches that she submitted to Tokyopop. No one can actually tell if she wants constructive criticsm or not.

[info]ph34rthedr4gon comments providing a small criticsm on how [info]sad_alice drew Harlan, and it all goes downhill from there.

My favorite line (emphasis mine): That kinda made me feel like I was being lumped into all the Adult Swim-watching, House of Anime-invading yadda yadda catgirl genre OMG shiny big eyes and homogenized character sixteen year old artists, who will never get a job because they just cut and trace their favorite animes all the time and can't take crits without crying their eyes out even though they deserve it.

IRONY +5!

Space Cases wank? But that was like my first fandom ever. I loved that show.

[Sekritly hopes they bring it back one day.]

[sekritly agrees with you]

You have no idea how pleased I was when I first tuned into Firefly and Jewel Staite rolled out from under the cockpit. I actually clapped my hands and squealed, "EEE! It's Catalina!"

And then I looked around hoping no one saw me.

Wait a minute...so...sad_alice doesn't want to be judged as a Japanophile even though she has a distinctly general "anime-influenced" style and wants to make a "manga" (why? WHY? Why can't we just call them comics! We're American, we can use English words for these things! Fine, fuck it, I'm gonna make me a bande dessinee...).

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

That's really funny. She's drawing in what's considered a "manga" style and gets all pissy when people call it "anime art". Newsflash, 'tard, IT IS. At least they didn't call it "that Pokemon stuff".

And, no, I don't know why they don't just call it comics. Probably because that'd induce the largest tidal wave of wank we've ever seen. All because of the little childrens that wanna Super Cool Original and Not Normal. (So they doggedly follow trends. Irony, it's irony!)

btw, I'm totally giggling at your icon. Just thought I'd let you know. :3

Amazing how much this manga/comics thing is popping up for me lately.

All I have to say about manga is this: European comics have style differences from American comics too. You don't see us calling THOSE by their European names, do you?

Whoever noticed that she seems to have taken lessons from How to Draw Manga? Absolutely spot on. Dayum.

Hi, I drew caricatures at an amusement park. If you are translating actor's faces to a visual art medium like a comic, you are essentially drawing a caricature, exaggerating the features to suit the style while keep them recognizable. It is fully possible to caricature an actor (black, white, fat, thin, ugly, pretty, lumpy, wrinkly, what have you) in a style reminiscent of manga/anime (harder, though). It is fully possible to do this consistently without resorting to what is, honestly, a very cookie-cutter manga style. I don't care if she calls it "original;" it's not. And it's obvious.

And while her drawing shows a decent degree of technical competence, that reflects nothing of her writing, layout, and scene set-up skills, not to mention that her creativity must be non-existent for her to use what is essentially a good opportunity in the business to pitch a fan-comic. Girl, even I have more class. But then I would also venture that my art skills are far more advanced. Funny how good artists are, more often than not, highly observant and intelligent people.

... nnnnot seeing it here, sorry. < /pretentiousness >
