Current mood:Holier-than-thou

I can't believe this hasn't been posted already.
For those who haven't been following, fanfic_hate is back with a vengeance, and the anime thread is chock full o' wank. (I still haven't seen my name there, but I live in hope!) Of course, this is old news. Hate communities beget wank. Right?

Well, someone thinks there's just not enough.

The new moderator, [info]sock_it_up, has instituted a policy of freezing threads that get too abusive-- either of the comm itself, or of specific authors or fans. An anon with the sock journal [info]fandomsux takes exception to this policy, and creates fandom_hate, where, and I quote, "YOU CAN TALK ABOUT WHATEVER YOU WANT WITHOUT POSTS BEING FROZEN." People, too.

So far, the anonymice are not impressed:

lol loooooozzzzeeeerrrrrr. There's nothing more pathetic than making another journal imitating another just because you don't get your way.

People too, eh? Hope you don't mind if we start with YOU, then.

"Waaah! I didn't get my way, so I'm going to make another community where I can attack not just fics, but the people who write them! I want to anonymously talk about how terrible and snooty they are, while ignoring my own cowardice and hypocrisy because I'm not only doing worse than what I accuse them of doing, I'm doing it behind the shield of anonymity because I don't want people to get mad at meeeeeeeeeeee! Waaaaaaah!"

Yep, this community is off to a great start. Byeeeeee!

And as an added bonus, fandom_wank's name is taken in vain yet again.

ETA: Comments are now turned off at fandom_hate (though, to be fair, the threads weren't frozen! JUST DELETED.), and an anonymouse takes exception to my mood. *sniff* It's all so beautiful!

This is in response to Panthea's 'Holier than thou' comments about the fanfic_hate group and its threads. Y'know, I've spent a few days going back and forth between this community and fanfic_hate and I have to shake my head at the comments at this communtiy. What is it about that group that makes you deride it so much? Because people want to post anonymously? SO WHAT! Like I had mentioned previously in another thread, the fanfic_hate serves a purpose for people who CAN'T post with their names because of the backlash. Just because you post your name with every comment doesn't make you any better than them. Now, people have come over to fanfic hate (not neccesarily from this community) and tried to 'talk sense' into them, but they are ignored and their replies are frozen. Still, I've roflmao at some of the comments made at fanfic_hate over some of the fics, too.
Guess what? Despite the derision from this community, fanfic_hate is going strong! There will always be very bad fanfic out there. There will always be someone out there who wants to use their freedom of speech to comment. I for one am glad I found such a place. I'm waiting for the mod to start up a thread for a genre I've read so I can slam some piss-poor writing that everybody else thinks is so great! Let me say this, though. I believe in slamming the fic, not the author.
So I'm called an anonymouse.
So what?

Dude, I love fanfic_hate. I'm there practically every day.

Of course, I actually post under my lj (mayatawi), but that's because I can't be arsed to do otherwise.

But this kneejerk defensiveness? Cute. Very cute.

Oh, good for you! Keep fighting the good fight. Y'know, as long as someone else says it's okay first.

Well, what I meant was that the mod has been intoducing new threads every so often. I did ask if I could just jump in to bash a fic, but someone replied to ask the mod to start a new thread. It would seem....rude?....to me, anyway, to start on a fic of a different genre while people are posting about something else. I can wait... ;)

I don't like fanfic hate. do I think it should be deleted, banned, whatever? Not hardly; not the least being that some people would love to do the same with F_W.

OTOH, if people are going to bash stories - and writers, writer-bashing goes on there too - I personally think the basher should have the cojones to put a name on their comments. What's the problem with using a consistent pseud? Certainly I don't use [info]user in MY home fandom. But it's my name here, the one I'm known by. And you know? I think if I'm going to say something nasty, I should have the guts to stand by my words.

But that's just me. Certainly there are a lot of anonymice over at fanfic hate that are relishing their anonyminity. (Personally, I think they're jealous writers or wanna-be-writers, but that's My Very Own Opinion too).

Hmm I can understand wanting to declare your hatred for a fic anonymously. I remember years ago my friends and I ranting about this one fic writer who wrote truly horrendous stories. But no matter what you really thought of the fics you didn't dare say anything negative(no matter how polite or contructive) to her. If you did you would get swarmed by her fangirls with shouts of "OMG!!! How can you be so MEAN!!!!111" and it would all disolved into a huge flaming wankfest on the mailing list. It got annoying because you would kill-file the author, but she would change her email address often, and it still didn't stop you from seeing all the praise she got. Being about to rant about it offline, or just with a friend helped, but it didn't help her get any better.

As far as the writer bashing goes I think some readers have the same problem some writers have. They can't seperate the work from the person, and so if they hate the fic, they must hate the person. Yeah, they are idiotic wankers, although it probably doesn't matter if they hate the fic first or the person. Once they start bashing the writer, it makes it really hard to see whatever point they had about the fic as valid.

You know, I don't know what's worse.

Scene 1:

Author: OMG, U LIEK BASH MI FIC! MEANIE! *Runs away in shame*

Scene 2:

Random shmoe: OMG, I BASH TEH FIC CAUSE I HATE IT! I GOT FIRST AMENDMANT! U CAN'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO! *Rebels*

For scene 1, the author shouldn't make such a fuss because when you post something public, someone is going to hate it, no matter how well you might write it.

For scene 2, just because you have 'Freedom of Speech' doesn't mean you can be an asshat about it. A lot of it is petty jealously or embarassing someone due to a personal grudge, not because they really write bad fic, although I've seen a few. Because I've seen some god awful fanfic, but none of it is being named due to that they're not huge names in fandoms or they don't write slash. And there's tons upon tons of bad het fic and I think I've seen perhaps 1. And of course, yuri gets neglected too.

I mean, if you're going to say something nasty about someone, at least have the balls to say it to their face. Afraid of backlash? Then don't say nasty things about people in the first place. I thought they taught this in like pre-school?

I agree with that statement, Starza. I also think people who do bash fics are those fans of whatever genre who feel they must 'defend' their hero or whoever from such writings.
In a way, I can understand that. I don't like reading about my fave character being put through something or doing something that I feel he/she shouldn't be doing.

Anyway, the reason I posted on this thread in the first place is that it seemed to me that, when I first found it, there was little but fan_fic hate bashing going on here. I was wondering if that was all that was done in this community. So that's why I put my three cents in.
The reason I'm an 'anonymouse' is that I don't have a LiveJournal account. I wouldn't have much time to devote to it anyway. I don't visit online communities too often and I just happened to find this one. This community led me to fan_fic hate and you people know the rest. ;)
BTW, who's yuri?
Thanks everyone for your comments.

Yuri = female/female. It's the reverse of yaoi, it's fem slash.
