Wank-A-Minute Review:

slytherinlinzi: Plagiarist!
wickedwitch81: Yes, I admit it and I'm very remorseful, which I'll prove to you by trying to shift blame to my mom.
sillybridget: Fanfiction and plagiarism are the same thing.

Actually I think this thread is goldmine of wank.

[Warning rehash of the old 'fanfic is illegal argument.]

Yeah, that's the sillybridget referenced in the original post. The thread I linked to has a link to it.

I think it'd be better to put both links in the post, linking to comments in another entry can be a little confusing.

As someone attempting to separate the "fanfic is illegal" argument from the "wickedwitch81 stole from and deceived people" argument, I would just like to ceremonially bang my head against a solid object. Gah!

Condolences, dude. It would be a very valid and thought-provoking topic of discussion if people would pull their heads out of their asses long enough to read what you wrote.

I'm just wondering how the two are related.

Last I checked fanfiction and plagiarism aren't the same thing, hell they aren't even remotely related.

sillybridget appears to be operating in a world where plagiarism and copyright infringement are the same thing. Since they're both illegal, they must be the same!

If I weren't too lazy to do it, I'd look up the interviews where JK Rowling has said she's OK with fanfic and point them out to sillybridget in reply to the posts where she's complaining that Rowling wouldn't like it, no sirree.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

But...

PLAGIARIST!!! That's deliberate theft!

Yeah. I think her argument goes that plagiarism is stealing from an author, and when you write fanfic you're stealing the characters and setting, so you're plagiarizing. The concept that plagiarizing is stealing the *words* is, apparently, beyond her.

Believe it or not, the wank has grown... an announcement that WickedWitch has been caught plagiarising in another fic (http://www.livejournal.com/users/campy_capybara/62087.html). And the drama bounces back and forth as [info]campy_capybara (the same announcer as above) tells us to go easy on her and that 'this too shall pass' (http://www.livejournal.com/users/campy_capybara/62209.html). But [info]cherii_emrei, who's taken a lot of flack for opposing WW says this is not a Wicked - witch hunt, we have proof (http://www.livejournal.com/users/cherii_emrei/146846.html).

And, joy of all joys, the fanfiction = plagiarism has evolved into a rather civilized debate on my livejournal, including the elusive [info]sillybridget. But we've at least established that we're arguing about copyright infringement and fair use (http://www.livejournal.com/users/nqdonne/59083.html).

Basically, this whole thing has split into two camps: those who have made it all about Wicked, and want to forgive her because of all she's done for the community and those who see plagiarism as plagiarism, especially now that this is an established pattern of behavior on the part of the "author." And on the latter side, we have the fanfiction = plagiarism issue, that is being argued almost independent of discussion WW.

I'm glad you made a post on this. It's something really sad that's going on in this branch of HP fandom... but you just can't ignore a good wank.

She claims to know that, and that we are missing her point: that being illegal = illegal.

This distinction doesn't make me want to beat her with a dictionary any less.

Isn't there some jurisimprudence law that makes a statement like 'I'm published so I know better than you what we're talking about here!' void?

If there isn't, there should be.

It should have a corrolary allowing even more shame and derision to be heaped on the speaker if the "publishing" is through a vanity press or other not-actually-published medium.

I'd also like to add that the post was made after she spoke to someone asking what they'd like her to do.

The apology after she got caught the second time:

Lately the topic of plagiarism has been discussed quite a lot in the D/Hr fandom. And recently, there have been accusations made saying that I have been plagiarising a certain book in the 4th chapter of my fic 'In The Darkness'.

However,I must say a few words in my defense. Yes, it is true that I was inspired by and have used passages from the book and posted an earlier copy of the chapter on my LJ.However it was the unedited version and after realising my mistake, I made the necessary amendments to it before posting it on aff.net.

But to be fair,I've taken down most of my fics from aff.net due to them being the target of flamers and kept the post about chapter 4 on my livejournal in private mode.

I admit,I was foolish for not confessing about this in my earlier post. I realised that I have made many mistakes and I apologize greatly for them all.

I'm afraid that this might be the last you'll hear from me.I've already tainted the D/Hr fandom enough with my actions.

Farewell. :)

Though on a related note, [info]sillybridget did make comparisons to Cassie Claire in some of her posts, then deleted many once she realized she was featured in the wank.

I hate it when they delete their posts, it makes me cry. Sort of.
