Because this keeps getting more and more ripe.
[info]sorchar already posted about this on [info]otf_wank, but I totally say this is fandom.

Ahhhh, the [info]johnxjohn community. You had wank potential from day one.

But it's totally gotten out of control tonight.

First, the mod changes the user info to have a big huge THIS IS JUST PARODY message. Then, she makes a dramatic OMG I QUIT post, which is where the fun really kicks in. The use of proper capitalization is bickered over. The name of MsAllegra is invoked. And the mod proclaims that not only will her creation of the comm haunt her until her dying day, but SLASH IS EMBARASSING, then refines that to FANFIC IS EMBARASSING.

And now, there's a brand spankin' new community for people who want to enjoy the Kerry/Edwards slashiness minus the slash! And they'll moderate out the slash for you and everything!

*sits back, eats popcorn, watches, waits for more*

But we can't ship it! And fanfiction might be allowed in the community in the future, but only if it's parody fanfiction! Which brings about a really fun pondering of how one makes the distinction, since I've sure as hell read serious fic that SHOULD be parody. *brain explodes too*

And the people who actually like it as a slash pairing entirely gross me out and I want to get as far away from that as possible.

...like, in real life? Because I think most of the people in the community realized it wasn't actually true. And calling slash gross when you write about gay cartoon characters for fun is kind of hypocritical.

Is it very, very sad that the moment I finished reading the post, I ran over here hoping someone had reported it?

It is just waaaay too early in the morning for this. Part of me feels bad for her, because apparnetly she never meant it to actually be a real pairing, but mostly I just boggle that anyone who has spent more than five minutes on the internet could NOT realize that this would actually become a pairing *g*

I fail to see how she justifies "slash is disgusting so you should not congregate in communities with fellow disgusting people, you sick fucks" with "slash is not something I talk about at the dinner table."

I do understand that she's been totally overwhelmed, and never intended it to become this, but wow, I just don't get the idea of starting a very public slash community if you find slash embarassing.

And yeah, this is the internet. FAR more disturbing things than some polislash have become HUGE here.

...uh. Maybe it's just me, but I didn't see many people taking it seriously, if any at all. I mean I think most of the people who decided to join the community understood it was faux-tinhattery. And pretty funny faux-tinhattery, at that. Okay, yeah, there was the one guy who trolled, but again, that was mostly just funny.

Also, repeating the question above... how can you ship slashiness if you aren't allowed to have the slash in the first place? This does not compute and I am sad.

Yeah, I never really saw the tinhattery either. Now, granted, I did not read every single comment on every single post, but I wasn't seeing anything even resembling the sort of OMG IT'S A CONSPIRACY THAT THEY HAVE TO HAVE WIVES stuff we'd see with real tinhattery.

And look there's a new post up over there now, which includes someone theorizing that some intrepid reporter could find the community and "have a field day". To which I say: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAH

Well, what I see is someone really squicked by RPS (except when it's OMG Political Parody!!) freaked out because other people have taken over her little joke. Sorry, when it's on the Internet... you know the drill (you know, the one people keep saying to badficcers who cry foul on every bit of concrit). And from what I've seen, it was just a matter of time the tongue-in-cheek tinhattery started, she just happened to be the first to make the relevant community.

that community has concerned me from the get-go. not because i think people shouldn't be writing john/john, because, whatever, but because i think it could be a potentially dangerous political tool if someone from the bush campaign came across it. "oh my god, look at the faggoty whackos that are supporting kerry! do you really want to vote for him now?" yadda yadda. it could turn into a major smear campaign, because those sort of people will use anything and everything they can get their hands on. it's a very potentially embarassing thing for the kerry campaign, and i personally would feel a lot better if it became friends only.

Hi, one of the ke_daily mods here. I just wanted to point out that the reason we started the community was not because we are anti-slash, but because we knew there were a lot of people who felt weird about the vibe over at johnxjohn, but did like the picspam and articles. It is moderated because it was created during a pseudo-fannish schism and it seemed wiser to do that than to have to delete lots of entries and come off as "the bad guy."

While I don't think that the johnxjohn has quite the ability to become as dangerous as some people have suggested, I have noticed the trend to homoeroticize Kerry and Edwards in the public media, and I don't think it's necessarily a positive spin. It's a good way of making gay rights an issue even though the majority of voters consider gay marriage a non-issue at the moment.

With the proliferation of photomanipulations something like johnxjohn could provide that could, theoretically, wind up on wrong places on the internet, it does worry me a little, I'll be honest.

I also said to Sonatine, my fellow mod that in creating the new community we were probably gonna get wanked. I just didn't expect it this soon.

Wow, when the moderator posts an "I quit" message, then you know you should ready yourself for knee-deep wank. I'm suddenly even gladder I have this comm friended (johnxjohn, that is).

The truth is, if she hadn't started the comm, someone else would have sooner or later. Heck, I'd started noticing the Kerry X Edwards slashiness around the same time, and when I found out about the community I thought, "Hey, why didn't I think of that?". For about five seconds. Until I realized what a huge repsonsibility running a community like that would be. If you can't stand the heat, don't come into the kitchen in the first place.
