The Titanic of Wanks continues...
Wank from VB beyond the grave--but not posted, no preciousss, sent to the attorney general's office:

In a March 5, 2004, email to DOJ investigator Fiona Harpster, Stone and Wood wrote, "We are very concerned to hear about the formalization of these accusations which had been previously maintained--where we feel they belong--only in the world of Internet rumor and gossip."

In the email to Harpster, Stone and Wood provided an account of some of Bit of Earth's finances but said they could not access many of their records due to computer problems. They prefaced the account with a disclaimer: "Most importantly, BitofEarth.net was not originally intended to be a charity organization."

Ass. Hats. You cannot TELL me that anything in HP tops this.

Read it all, see the art, at www.wweek.com

Well, HP wank changes - while LOTR is always the same. One wank to rule them all. Makes sense.

Is part of the online version of the story missing? Because there seems to be a hell of a jump here:

"Tolkien fandom is uniquely complex," says Amy Sturgis, an instructor at Nashville's Belmont University who has written extensively about fan culture. "There are purists who have never seen the movies and never want to. There are people who come to Tolkien through the movies and don't know the books. And there are people who bridge the gap."

Astle and Renne both now allow that fan enthusiasm overrode common sense in their dealings with Bit of Earth.

And then it goes straight into the saga without ever identifying who everyone is!

The sidebar covers some of the missing details but yeah, a chunk of text is missing. Either bad coding or bad editting.

the link doesn't, for some reason, go to the start of the article. i clicked, as i normally do on newspaper sites, on the 'print it' button to get a less cluttered version, and got the full article.

"Most importantly, BitofEarth.net was not originally intended to be a charity organization."

Well, I'm sure that comes as a big surprise to Sean Astin, and the tens, hundreds, thousands of fans that supported BitofEarth.net. Having read Turi's LJ, I know there are emails out there from these two indicating (but lying) that they had submitted BoE for tax-free charitable status.

So, what was it intended to be? Oh, that's right! Amy and Abby's income!

*sheesh*

Oh, man, I was more offended by the concept that this was never intended to go beyond the world of internet rumor and gossip. PUH-FUCKING-LEASE!!!!! If you want wank and wank alone, DON'T STEAL MONEY AND TERRORIZE CELEBRITIES!

Exactly! People sent us all those donations because they LIKED us! They, really, really LIKED us!

Wow. All I can say is, that intellicock must have come with some big brass ones. Although, I'm sure the first unimpeachably true thing she's said in a while is that BoE was never intended to be a charity.

Hmmm..

Now I know I haven't been following the wank very closely but did anyone else think the article was more about what interesting and wonderful people Abby and Amy are then it was about how they ripped off many, many, people and caused both legal and financial issues that are still not settled?

Maybe it's just me....

Perhaps it's just me, but I found the overall tone of the article to be very condescending to those who actually were defrauded by the duo.

Sort of like, "you are supposedly intelligent people with careers requiring an intellect greater than your average supermarket cashier, you saw all the warning/wanking signs, and yet you were so enamoured by both your fannish pursuit and the OMFG.it's.a.celebrity!!!111 that you couldn't see an obvious con."

You have got to be kidding me. They were caught red handed and still are professing their innocence? Cause, like, it was all shits and giggles?

Ugh, you have my deepest sympathies in dealing with these scary dumbfucks; and my best wishes in getting them thrown either into the clink or a nice sanitarium.

Well crap, it was posted here already. ^.^;; Better go delete my post, don't need two posts of the same thing.

And yes, the day that anything in HP tops this is the day the fandom just implodes on itself... mainly because I don't think the HP fandom could handle anything as big as this.
