Highlander wank
Mean BNF's drove me out of the fandom wank.

You should just pitch a tent at Fanfic_Hate, because the wank is everywhere!

And Highlander is not immune. It is that fandom's turn on the wheel and what do we get? Intrigue, backstabbing, arguing and major BNF's being mean to other BNF's.

The thread started here. Anonymouse said:

I know this is people based hate, but I want to nominate lanning's Sacred Trust as perhaps the most under-rated fics in the fandom, and hate on the hateful BNFs who ran her out of Highlander for providing an original, but wholly plausible, take on Duncan and Methos. Guess her Duncan and Methos didn't jive with the fanon gospel and god help you if you dared to like it anyway. Fucking bitches.

Then people start naming names of who ran Lanning out of Highlander and links are posted to Lanning's "statement" on the mess. (Which was made months ago, but is interesting for the sheer volume of wank inside the journal post).

But, the *best* part of this wank is the banner, MacGeorge has on her web site, apparently dedicated to Lanning and her OOC Duncan and Methos which started this war.

http://wordsmiths.net/MacGeorge/banner.jpg

It seems the Smallville masses are in the HL thread defending Lanning from the HL BNF's who made Lanning's life miserable while she was writing in Highlander.

It's a relatively small wank now, but it could grow.

ETA: Thanks to an anonymouse, I found out it wasn't the banner that set off this feud between MacGeorge and Lanning (and their friends & lovers) that is now on fanfic_hate.

No, it was when Lanning posted an excerpt from her then newly published HL novel, Sacred Trust on the Critical Edge list and MacGeorge took offense at it, feeling it did not depict Duncan MacLeod the way she viewed Duncan MacLeod or some such nonsense. MacGeorge told the whole world her views on this topic in many public forums and based on that one excerpt Lanning's novel was vilified in the fandom. The banner was posted on Critical Edge list after the excerpt to show that MacGeorge liked her characters three dimensional, not two dimensional.

Now, mind you this was years ago! This fandom hold grudges much?

Thanks to anonymouse for the history lesson.

Mine too, I'm tempted to post my own thoughts about Fanfic_hate, but I'm afraid it would set off a mountain of wank.

Awww. She's one of the few Clex authors in SV whose work I still read, so I agree with the person who said "Highlander's loss was Smallville's gain."

And that banner is unbelievably bitchy.

Okay, it's time to start the Bible-fic hate thread! I'll go first....

I think Obadiah is an asshole whose fics were blatant trolling of the Bible fic archive. Case in point:

2 "See, I will make you small among the nations;
you will be utterly despised.

8 "In that day," declares the LORD ,
"will I not destroy the wise men of Edom,
men of understanding in the mountains of Esau?

Now everyone fucking knows this isn't canon -- the wise men of Edom were Jewish (Edom was in what is now southern Isreal), and Obadiah does the same damned thing that Isiah did, which is violate canon by claiming that a Jewish god ruling over Jewish people in Judah would just destroy His chosen people. Yeah, and Draco will wind up as a Girl Scout Den Mother because he "wants to help raise moral, responsible youg girls." Personally, I despise Obadiah because he's just sucking up to the screaming teenie Babylon fangirls. What next -- Roman rulers in Jerusalem?!? These sorts of fanfic writers make me sick with their blatant disregard of the author's intentions. When Jehovah wrote Genesis, I sincerely doubt he meant for some piss-ant BNF to come along and start dissing Abraham's descendants.

I must also talk about Song of Solomon here. Solomon, as the Bible makes perfectly clear, is a wise and noble ruler of Isreal He wasn't a bastard like his dad David, who went around sending his subjects off to get killed so he could screw their wives. Yet the author of the Song of Solomon has made a nice,.moral upstanding character into a total horndog. For instance:

2 Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth-
for your love is more delightful than wine.
3 Pleasing is the fragrance of your perfumes;
your name is like perfume poured out.
No wonder the maidens love you!
4 Take me away with you-let us hurry!
Let the king bring me into his chambers.

16 How handsome you are, my lover!
Oh, how charming!
And our bed is verdant.

Get a room, jackass, and stop projecting your slash fantasies on Solomon. And the metaphors...oh, they burnz, they burnz! Here:

7 Tell me, you whom I love, where you graze your flock
and where you rest your sheep at midday.

Er...that's the worst metaphor for oral sex I've ever heard. Yeah, barnyard animals always get me in the mood, uh-huh. And yet the beastiality images just keep on fucking coming:

From Chapter 4:

1 How beautiful you are, my darling!
Oh, how beautiful!
Your eyes behind your veil are doves.
Your hair is like a flock of goats
descending from Mount Gilead.
2 Your teeth are like a flock of sheep just shorn,
coming up from the washing.
Each has its twin;
not one of them is alone.

From Chapter 5:

12 His eyes are like doves
by the water streams,
washed in milk,
mounted like jewels.

Same damned image. If it doesn't work the first time, it ain't gonna work the second. Jeezus! Notice also that the author can't even remember if Solomon is screwing some hot slave-boy or a girl. Check this out:

10 I am a wall,
and my breasts are like towers.

So Solomon undergoes a sex change? And turns into an ugly girl with tits that stick out like fucking missiles or something? Some internal consistency would be nice, you know? What a fucking loser.

Basically, the author of Song of Solomon violates everything we know about the canon, and turns Solomon into some omnisexual bestiality-lovin' depraved sex fiend. And you just know he has all the fangirlz and fanboyz stroking his ego (and his "dick like a rabid antelope") and telling him how sensitive and what a BNF he is. He's one of those people where you have to be careful not to tell him the truth about his writing because that would be flaming him.

I could go on and on...but I think I've made my point. So what other Bible fanfic writers do y'all hate?

Dude, he had 6000 wives and concubines. Sure, the horndogging isn't explicitly stated, but you have to have one hella an appetite to make them all happy.

Me, I just want to talk about this motherfucking Marty Sam named Jesus here. Walks on water my fat ass.

Oh, please. I hate to be cliched, but it's clear you're just jealous. Song of Solomon was, in my not-so-humble opinion, a brilliant exploration of an otherwise two-dimensional character. Solomon's good and wise and just in canon, yadda yadda yadda. So what? For cripe's sake, let the man get laid.

And it's not our fault you can't appreciate a good metaphor when you see one. Some of us like our oral sex to be poetic.

Now if you want crap fanfic, what the hell is up with Revelation? Talk about an author hyped up on his own importance. And yet you have legions of mindless fanboys and fangirls singing its praises to high heaven. It. Has. No. Plot. Talk about self-congratulatory crap.

HL fans are crazy. I run a fandom glossary sort of mini-site, and that;s the one fandom I won't touch with a ten-foot pole when it comes to their internal slang about pairings and such. If you list SOME but not ALL, the wrath descends. I just link to one of their own pages about the subject and run like hell.

I'm not sure why HL is so...well the way it is. I'd say it was the size but I've been in other small fandoms that were nothing like this. Maybe it's just the violence in the show itself.

I thought the HL fandom had been too quiet. From what I've experienced, there aren't a lot of what I would call 'bad fics' in the fandom, but that never stops the fandom from finding things to bitch and flame about.

You know, I spent some time yesterday rereading the CritEdge thread on Sacred Trust, because the way I've heard it told never rang true for me. I gather that another list, CarsonKearns or somesuch, also discussed it, but I've either unsubbed or the list has been deleted, so I can't check how that went down.

Anyway, I'd sure like to know if other lists went up in flames over this, because I thought the CritEdge discussion was pretty damn polite. Lanning mentioned private mail, but I can't very well judge that.

CritEdge is an open archive mailing list, by the way. You don't have to join to read it. The zine is announced and then later, MacG's first mention of the zine is four sentences in this message. People talk, and you can judge for yourself if you want, but I, at least, really don't see the vilification. Basically, people don't feel the story excerpt makes them want to buy the zine. The banner is something of a joke, but I can see how Lanning may have been hurt by it. Someone comes in a few days later, saying the list can't judge the story by the excerpt. List goes, "We didn't. We judged the excerpt and whether or not it made us want to read the story". That goes on for a bit. A few of the messages have been deleted, but they're quoted by others.

Next time Sacred Trust shows up on list, people are reviewing the story, and rather favourably, too.

So unless, as I've said, something went down elsewhere, or MacG, Laura JV et al flamed Lanning in private, what did I miss?

A lot of the worst flames were on the Carson Kearns list and a lot of the more vicious things were sent privately to Lanning. Ask her, I am sure she'd tell you.

I have no desire to get into this again, once was enough. But since I was around at the time and on mosts of the HL lists (although a lurker), I do remember what happened. But, MacGeorge's post of the banner did cause very bad feelings to occur. (She posted it at the wrong time, IMHO and it looked like she was posting as a direct result of Lanning's excerpt. Maybe it wasn't meant to look that way, but it did.)

As for what did you miss, again, I suggest you ask Lanning. She could tell you in great detail what you missed, because with people deleting posts, selective memories, I am sure you are not getting the full story. Because as you know, there are two sides to every story.

Anonymouse, who is staying out the the fray
