"Unpopular Fannish Opinions"
Jenny O has 10 unpopular fannish opinions that are apparently an ulterior motive to smack Elektra around about her Draco/Narcissa fiction. Friends shouldn't flame friends, and Jenny O only did it because she's a BNF, according to Girlflesh, who risks her very life talking contrariwise to Jenny O. Meanwhile, Pandarus addresses the actual issues, discovering only at the last that she stepped in wank totally by accident.

Like I said over in girlflesh's LJ, fanFICTION is an outlet for your own personal fantasies, and no-one has the right to tell you that what you write about is 'wrong'. If you enjoy it, then it's right for you. You're not hurting anyone, so no-one has the right to bitch about it.

*sporfle*! Mary Sue? Is that you?

Sexual "deviancy" without some measure of basic thought about gender and sexuality makes the baby jesus cry.

But doesn't ALL sexual deviancy make him cry? Not just the poorly thought out type?

he's REALLY not going to fuck a Weasley, because in his eyes? Canonically? They're nigger-lovers and race-traitors; they're worse than the Muggle-niggers.

Wow....was gonna say something about all this besides I am floored, but I ain't going near the N-word with a 10 foot pole.....seriously, I think she has issues.......

The incest is creeping me, and you just don't have enough justification to make it work.

So, if it creeps you, no one should write it? Got it!

As someone who loves dark and deviant and sexual, people, let's just stop now with how deep and meaningful and better than silly fluff your dark fic is. I ain't dogging your vision, but it's the equivalent of 10,000 13 year old goth girls writing poetry about death, quoting Poe, and talking about how deep it is that she understands that all love is death, and that the sight of blood on her hand makes her think.

ALL HAIL THE QUEEN OF WHAT WE SHOULD AND SHOULDN'T WRITE AND HOW WE WRITE IT! What is she? Number 5,984,947 in line?

I'd kill for a humor-fic renaissance, where people are funny and comedic without it being badfic, because writing comedy is hard. So much harder than superfluous gore, death, and BDSM.

But the superfluous gore, death, and BDSM are the fun stuff.....

Saw this on my flist this morning and wondered how long it would take to show up here.

I love Jennyo's rants. And am quite amused that something that comes right out and claims to be an "unpopular opinion" can cause so much whimpering, painful, "OMG u r so MEEN and RONG and I am GUD, u dirty h0r!" reaction among the fangirls. I mean, she didn't headline it "10 Unpopular Fandom Facts", did she?

Eeeeeeeeeeh... I hate to admit this cuz this woman's hoity-toityness isn't exactly to my taste... but I really have to agree with this one point of hers:

........STFU about there being A) no women characters you can identify with/write (because you're identifying with a 200-yr-old plus vampire from Ireland? Because he shares so much of your experience?), B) no good/hot femslash, and C) hating women characters because they are both too goody-goody, or they do something wrong. Ever. It's still the double standard even if you have breasts, people. [ie, when Spike or Sark does it, it's hot and sexy cuz he's a bad boy. When Lilah or Lauren does it, you hate that bitch, cuz she's unequivocally evil. This is my middle finger, and I'm doing it as hard as I can.]

I HATE HATE HATE it when female fans of anything automatically hate the women characters because: 1)they're idiotically jealous said characters will steal the men-folk from their Mary Sues; 2)they can't seperate loving slash from being misogynist; and 3)They see all other women, no matter how fictional, as The Competition. And the flack femme-slash gets is just... geh.

So... there you go. Props to the Queen Bee for having at least this good point in her rantage.

5. Esoteric academic stuff has a place in fandom and I'm not necessarily responsible for translating it for you unless I'm aiming at the wider reading audience. I mean, yes. I would love to have the long discussion of performing sexuality on LJ and how there's a curious tension between the (female heterosexual) author and the queered text that she's producing, and in the queered interaction she produces as a performing subject where affective response is inscribed as a virtual sexual interaction, but if there are four people who understood what the hell I just blathered above, I'm cool with that. And telling me I'm just being esoteric to be superior or to flaunt my insecurities makes me want to beat you with a stick.

Ok, that made me snicker.

But otherwise? Bitch, please. Apparently bitching out a friend and making it seem like a high-handed dismissal of a bunch of fen you don't know and don't care to know is really fucking low. Unimpressed.

Fandom is fucking weird.

Also, if that chick is a BNF I'll eat my hat. I don't know who the fuck she is. 8-|

It cracks me up every time the BNFs do this. JennyO has perhaps got *the* biggest ego in all BtVS fandom and is in seriously danger of disappearing up her own ass. Still, there's no one I'd rather see take the fangirls down a peg or two. Who cares that she's not a major player in HP fandom? Some of the points she raised are sadly universal.

Ha! In the comments to Elektra's post:

So what is she doesn't think Draco is more than one-dimensional--neither does JKR--but there's so much we don't see of him in canon. That's one aspect I love about fanfic--that you can take a character and change it, make it better (or worse). If you do it slowly, over time, you can redeem anyone. I should know. I redeemed Angelus over five years. *g*

1. If the author thinks a character is one-dimensional? Then he IS. That's the definition of canon.
2. Best. Claim. Ever.

There's a good lass. Jenny O can't ever get her rant on without mentioning Lilah at least once--even if she has to jump a fandom or two to do it.

I am currently wetting myself with laughter over the people who posted "OMG!!1! But you wrote this! You're a h0r!"

Because, obviously, people only write characters they like.

Wankprophet's Ten Unpopular Dr. Seuss Opinions

(Disclaimer: Do not let your kids read this until they're 21. I mean it.)

I) The fish in The Cat in the Hat was not a well-rounded individual. Twenty couplets of mommy issues do not a three-dimensional character make. So the next time I hear about how the fish isn't really evil and your interpretation of him is as valid as mine and that having the fish stab the Cat in the Hat to death in his sleep is canonically-plausible, I'm gonna flame you like Richard Simmons meeting a Backstreet Boy. In fact, I wish all you fanfic writers would stop trying give depth to characters that, in general, are as profound as Ronald McDonald Horton hears a fucking "who", not a "who will relieve me of my agony, allow my dark sperm to burst forth in an ecstasy of subverted desire?" So if you find yourself writing drabble about Horton's necro-political longings, stop right there and beat your hands with a ruler until they're willing to quit writing that stuff. The Hortons in "Horton Hears a Who" and "Horton Lays an Egg" are the same damned obsessive-compulsive elephant with gender-identity issues. There's no character development whatsoever. Capisce?

II) Stop making such a big deal about incest...cause, let's face it, almost every human in the Suess canon looks exactly alike. Wanna know why? Cause they're the exact same person!!!!eleventy-one11!! Jeesuz. So when Zookeeper McGrew screws you know who (with the bad hair-do) anew in the loo, there's a word for it, a word most of you Suess-fic writers should be intimately familiar with: masturbation.

III) When a Whoop-dee-la-coo humps a Neener in his third mouth, you've crossed the line. Neener's are canonically incompatible with Whoop-dee-la-coos (I mean, their mouths are the wrong fucking shape!) The same goes for Malakumps and Creechee-nobs -- the fact that a Creechy-nob has three dicks and a Malakump only has one orifice should clue you in. So when writing sexually deviant Seuss pairings, show a little common sense. I don't care what Suessical the Musical depicted, there's nothing canon about a Derrywheezer doing the Horizontal Moonwalk with all the Whos of Whoville...cause, scale? that's definitely an issue. Broadway can screw up canon all it wants, but those reviewers raving about the "raw animal sexuality" obviously never read the books.

IV) Once and for all, just because you don't think there are any interesting Who characters doesn't mean you're right. Especially if you're identifying with the fucking Grinch just because he has the same dental work as you. It's a double standard...when Cindy Lou Who carves the Roast Beast, she's a bitch trying to take over the ceremony. When the Grinch carves it, he's being assertive and showing the depths of his redemption.

V) Making up words has a place in Suess fic. Even Suess did it. So stop complaining that when I use the word "comfuckuleate" or "nastyrorious," that these aren't real words and you don't know what they mean. After all, do you really know what Barthelomew's "oobleck" was? I mean, it was like green sperm or something. Falling from the sky. Try to explain that, if you will.

elektra:
Yeah, good thing you're so anti-nice, 'cause your darling Jennyo? Mocks you behind your back. Just FYI.

*sporfle*

Ok, that is possible THE bitchiest thing I have ever seen. Seriously. Man. Talk about random, left-field non sequiturs. Ouch.

I don't know whether to be impressed by JennyO's refusal to throw down in the comments and instead move to email, or to feel robbed of lovely, lovely spooge. I'm all conflicted.

Anybody who uses racial slurs for shock value/to make herself seem like more of a hardass is lame, lame, lame. I love how her toadying little friends are laughing about how "Omg, people who like DRACO are getting offended because you used a repulsive racial pejorative!" Because everyone who likes Draco is actually racist and just loves reading that kind of bullshit. Shut the fuck up.

Can we look forward to this boring pretentious bitch moving into the HP fandom full time? Because we'd better get ourselves ready for whatever she has to pull out of her ass in order to prove that HP is, indeed, all ABOUT LILAH.

I think it's amusing to see her come down on anyone about their preferences or twisting of canon. You know, all things considered.
