When your grammar is in doubt, blame elitism (yet again)
At fanfic symposium, Cynical Otter rambles about "Flogging Elitism in the Fanfiction World".

A shortened version:

blah blah blah snobby fan fiction writers blah blah insecurity and pretentiousness, served with a side order of the no-life syndrome blah fan faction is NOT as serious as say, human rights or war blah de blah they lack the basic brain function of enjoyment squeak whine their “inferior” counterparts could come up with better original characters then they could ever hope too whaaaaa whaaaa If you can write better then Anne Rice, where are your book deals blah blah sinister sect my personal favorite Take that typo and write the most patronizing review you can about the misplaced coma she's still rambling My problem rests solely with the dingdongs that decided that going to college and taking Women’s Lit. somehow gives you an advantage over 99% of the general population.

Comments on Cynical Otter's post are amassing here.

ETA: More commentary, thanks to an anon poster below.

ETA (again): FYI -- According to the GAFF thread (see link above), Cynical Otter and PM Flores (from this wank) are the same person.

ETA: It looks like we elitists have been given an apology...?

If you can write better then Anne Rice, where are your book deals?

That's what I'd like to know. *taps foot, glares expectantly at publishing companies*

Psssst...the money's all in screenplays, man. Screenplays that are titled after books that have nothing to do with them.

*places two fingers on side of nose*
*sidles away, inconspicuously*

other words, don’t EVER attempt to belittle their anger when they see a fan fiction that slashes Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy.

Since when does that anger people?

It doesn't anger you to see people wasting their time writing Harry/Draco when they could be wasting their time writing Harry/Snape, Harry/Black, Harry/Lupin or Harry/Neville?

No matter how good a story is, if it includes a “Mary Sue”, the elitists will automatically shoot the story to pieces.

Well *yeah*. Mary Sues are the bane of fanfiction! Althouth he probably meant 'original character', which *anyone* can tell you is not the same thing.

Uh, frankly?

I disagree with that assessment.

I think that bashfic and pervasive fanon are far worse "sins", myself.

Especially fanon - it muddies up the waters really badly.

Not quite. My take is that when you get down to 'Mary Sue' is just another term for 'bad characterization' which SHOULD be the bane of every writer.

But I had no idea that being unable to read fics where the dialog isn't broken up and there's Random, Nonsensical Capitalization made me an elitist asshat.

I thought it meant I had functioning brain.

A tea-fanfic analogy.
smirnoffmule
2004-07-23 03:34 am UTC (link)
I was immediately targeted the moment I decided to remind people that fan faction is NOT as serious as say, human rights or war. Apparently, fan fiction is a more serious topic then any issue that involves the state of our planet.

Basically, she went to a board that exists for the purpose of discussing fanfiction, and was surprised to find that the predominant topic of conversation was fanfiction.

This kind of sentence just makes me want to chew my fingers. I mean for crying out loud, Is everything you do in your day as important as war or human rights? And if not, do you therefore not give a fuck about it, and put your shirt on inside out and your pants on your head, because getting yourself dressed properly in the morning is not as important as war, or human rights?

I mean, for fuck’s sake, the cup of tea I just made isn’t as important as war or human rights, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to not bother to boil the kettle and then put the milk in all willy-nilly. Because I enjoy my cups of tea; they bring me simple pleasure, and so I try to make my tea how I like it, and when other people make me tea, I wrassle at them if they make it too weak. And if I’m making tea which I expect other people to drink, I’m going to try and do it to the best of my ability, because otherwise it’s just rude.

These are the people who created the terms “Mary Sue” and “fan girl”, the people who quickly label your story with them.

I'm sure the writer of the Trekfic in which "Mary Sue" was actually born would be interested to hear that GAFF created the term. At least what, 20 years later?
