Singer Darren Hayes, best known as singer for Savage Garden and just about to release his second solo album, has a fanclub.  This fanclub is very clear in their no-tolerance attitude towards mp3 sharing (no surprises there) and his label Sony has sued fans in the past amd shut down websites hosting mp3s (again, no surprises there)

What is surprising is when the fanclub decides to a) do the label's dirty work and b) get it totally wrong. 

harebell_jones posted this emotional apology. She also took down the lyrics she had posted from songs on a not-yet-released upcoming album.  She was under the impression she was being threatened with court action for posting these lyrics @_@

Then Darren's fanclub messageboard had a message from one of the head people, i'll post it here since you have to be a paying member to access the bbs:

Hello All,
I just wanted to let you know how disappointed that some fans are hosting illegal files on there online diaries. I just want to say that this is illegal and we have referred them to our legal teams. I just wanted to state once again that hosting, downloading these files and sharing them is illegal and definetly not COOL!
You know I realise that this is a very small minority in the fanbase that do this and that the vast majority of you would never do this. To those fans, we are truly greatful!

harebell_jones had only been posting lyrics to unreleased (as of yet) songs and somehow word got to the fanclub that she was hosting mp3's.  For some reason, either they didn't bother to investigate that claim or they just plain can't read because they went ahead and issued her a threatening email

Now i don't know about you but while posting lyrics or any other materials copyrighted to someone else without permission is technically illegal, i don't think text versions of the lyrics and the "audio files" refered to by the email could possibly be considered the same thing @_@ 

So basically the fanclub was threatening to sue one of their own fans (and member of their fanclub too!) over something they were NOT guilty of.  My mind boggles LOL

Outrage was seen over at the ol' Savage Garden BBS when harebell_jones explained her situation.
