Aren't newbies supposed to have a nice welcome when they join a community?
Apparently people like sweetest_savage don't think so

Head, meet desk.

Finally, some Guilty Gear wank! I'm all for Sol/Ky or Anji/Baiken art.

Although I-No/everyone isn't a bad prospect...

Ya know for someone who claims to have no issues with 'yaoi' or 'homosexuality' he sure seems to be hung up on the gay fanart doesn't he?

The people who are the most upset by it always seem to research it very carefully so they can say, in detail, exactly how horrified they are.

People who feel the need to insert into their comments 'I'm not homophobic' or 'I'm not racist' when *nobody has accused them of being homophobic or racist* just come off as being overly defensive. And annoying. I see it all the time..'I hate slash...but I'm not a homophobe!!!!' Did anybody say you were? Almost as annoying is the 'I know I'm going to get flamed for this, but...' Followed by a 'controversial' opinion usually shared by half the community they're posting to. I can't help but think they're just doing this to get a bunch of reassuring 'I feel the same way!' replies. Bleh.

yey! for unrelated rants by me. I need caffeine.

Yes, maybe, but the thing is, if you don't you'll get accused of it, anyway - people are so bloody politically correct these days that if you don't back up every statement you make, you're gonna get shit on.

I remember this girl on some forum who thought it was wrong to use the word 'gay' negatively because her gay cousin didn't appreciate it.
She also didn't appreciate me telling her that the world doesn't revolve around overy-sensitive, politically correct homosexuals and to kindly get a life.
... Guess what I got called?

Hmm... I bitch at people in real life who use "gay" negatively. Mostly because it's used by children who don't realize it's simply re-enforcing the mindset that homosexuality is wrong...

... or something like that...

Yeah, there are oversensitive dumbasses in every group. And the sort of person who's going to start throwing around the term 'homophobe' like that isn't going to think 'well, she said she wasn't one, so obviously I can't say she is!!' All it does is make the person look overly defensive.

I think using 'gay' to mean 'stupid' makes one sound about eight years old, though I wouldn't say it offends me.

some people take things too seriously...and other people throw around the term 'politically correct' as an insult so much that I'm starting to groan every time I see it used.

Is it bad that I partly agree with sweetest_savage? I have trouble looking at porny anime and pairing drawings as art. They're not inherently wrong or anything, I just don't see it as art. Hell, I have trouble seeing people who only draw fanart over and over as artists as much as artistically-abled fans.

...aw man I'm gonna get beaten by sticks so bad for that one.

I'm not at all offended by your observation, RJC, but I'm kinda curious as how you define art, now. :D;

'Course, I have trouble defining those GIANT RED OMGWTF SQUARE ON WHITE CANVAS paintings as 'art', so who am I to talk?

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]redjackcash
2004-07-26 07:34 pm UTC (link)

Meh, but I feel like art is meant to be used to express something. I have trouble seeing "OMG THESE CHARACTERS ARE SO HOT AND GAY AND I WILL MASTERBATE TO THEM NOW" as something artistically valid.

That doesn't mean all art has to be OMG DEEEEEEP. But someone who has so much talent and technical skill but just spends their life drawing other people's characters? They're not thinking or moving or leaving their little comfortable fantasy bubble at all. I don't see that as art, I see that as stagnancy.

I guess I just define art as THINKING while you create. Fanart is fun and can be somewhat technically difficult at times, but doesn't require that much brainpower.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]shiori

Me, at the very simplest, I tend to define art as anything that's designed to be aesthetically pleasing above all else (yes, I know, there's more). This is why I'm a low-brow slob. But I think you're ranging a bit too far on the other end, here.

If a picture of two fictional characters making out isn't art, what is it? Furniture?

Okay, that's still too facetious. Um. I recognize that not all art-as-a-substance is good or meaningful, and that the stuff that is really is in another class. (And I have trouble talking about art and only meaning visual art anyway.) The bigger question is, so what? Who ever said that fanart is supposed to be artistically valid? I don't think most fanartists exactly think of themselves in the terms of the Louvre.

While he may have a bit of point I don't see why he made it in some poor newbie's post.

I mean they weren't going 'I AM the *art*' they just pointed out that they do GG fanart and mentioned some of the [het] couples and characters they drew.

(Reply to this)(Parent)

[info]beccastareyes
2004-07-26 03:19 am UTC (link)
Well, it al depends on how you define art. And, as long as you don't expect everyone else to agree with you, and you recognize that some of those fanartists are damn talented at what they do (even if it isn't art in your opinion), most sane people will agree to disagree.

Of course, you are talking to someone who is willing to call a particularly elegant mathemtical proof art, so I have a bit of a broad deinition.

But that's what's even sadder. They're so talented...why don't they use it for something more than mild internet celebrity?

But, ah. This is an eternal thing, not living up to potential, with or without the internet. The Intarweb just helps even more, because those with an active fantasy life can easily invest themselves into the unreal world of the web and never leave.

But yeah, I don't expect everybody to OMG TAKE MY OPINION NOW. I just felt like being Devil's Advocate - sometimes it's interesting to present an unpopular point of view - especially about fandom, which so many people react to differently.

I mean, it is how I feel, but it's a lot more complicated than that...I've had to resort to sweeping generalizations for this discussions, which I dislike. It's not like I think all fanart is horrible and uninspired or anything. But for the sake of the discussion I've had to pare it down...

Ah, well.

[info]beccastareyes

Ah.. the talent question. Basically, I know a lot of people who stick to fanart and fanfic (as opposed to original art and fic) because they enjoy it. And some people DO do original stuff -- I know original writers who still write fanfic in their spare time or as a break, and original artists who both send off portfolios to companies looking for anime-style art and draw fanart in their spare time. It's like the old wanky, 'Why do peopel write fanfic when they are talented enough to try for publication?" Some people just see art or writing as a hobby... something they are good at but don't want to make a living out of. So, they might as well draw what they like.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]redjackcash
2004-07-26 09:29 pm UTC (link)
Yeah, but that doesn't mean I have to see it as art. I can understand that people want to do whatever they want for enjoyment - good for them. But then, that's what it is, a hobby, something they created on a whim...not necessarily art.

Of course, that doesn't mean that some of it can't be.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]beccastareyes
2004-07-26 09:43 pm UTC (link)
True... but why should hobbies and art be mutually exclusive? I don't know about you, but I take my hobbies pretty seriously... I put effort into them, and try to improve myself. Just because one is only doing something for the fun of it doesn't mean that it is less valuable than the same work produced to get paid.

But, as I said, I have loose standards for art -- and usually the talent of the artist isn't part of those standards, as long as the artist is thinking artistically/creativly.

Because they want to.

Really, it is kind of a waste, but it's their talent and they can do what they damn well please with it. Nobody is obligated to you or to anyone else to make "appropriate" use of their skills.

getting paid for it doesn't qualify it as art, either.
