Freedom of the PRESS!...Er, FF.net
Technobubblegum gets upset about FF.net's change of rules, and posts to the marysues comm about it for no apparent reason.

Most hysterical part:

NO. They don't have the right to say what style we can and cannot write in. Freedom of the press, people!

July 27th -- FanFiction.Net Content Guidelines have been updated to reduce the apparent confusion of two rules:
Chat and script format are the same. We have not allowed chat and script format for years.
Choose your adventure and second person/you based are interactive entries. We do not accept interactive stories.

NO. They don't have the right to say what style we can and cannot write in. Freedom of the press, people!
I'm leaving ff.net- for real this time.
If you know of a better fanfiction site for me to go to, TELL ME. Please.

(x-posted to my journal, ficdiscussion, and silver_oblivion)

Of course, this being the Mary Sue Report, the usual response runs along the lines of, "Great! Less You!Sues!"

The righteous indignation is just so cute. *pets it*

ETA: So now she's edited it to take out the "freedom of the press" part, but added this instead:

Edit: OK, so maybe I didn't make myself seem smart. And maybe my opinions differ from yours... but thank you for making me want to go find a corner to hide in.

You're welcome!

"I'm leaving ff.net- for real this time."

It's the "for real this time" that really sells it.

Is this comment (http://www.livejournal.com/community/marysues/1481871.html?thread=13509263#t13509263) for real?

I can't tell. It's just gotta be sarcastic... right?!

Oh, I wanted to smack her for that. >_< But, with me being the "nice" person I am and wanting to keep up my good appearance of always being "understanding" in that community, I gave her that archive option thing rather than flaming her. I had a nice flame for technobubblegum going, but didn't post it out of sheer...stupidity? Maybe I should have been more wank-esque? Hehe, at first I thought her comment was a joke, but knowing her, it most certainly wasn't. I <3 teh MarySue rant sessions, I really do.

NO. They don't have the right to say what style we can and cannot write in.

Except for the fact that they, you know, own the site.

It's not like there aren't any other fanfiction sites out there...

Actually yes they can and will. Suck it up or move to different site,or put your fics up in LJ, or just don't post crappy second person script fics.

It's not that hard folks.

Most of ff.n's suckiness has to do with the sort of fics posted there rather than any rules they have.

If all she writes are script-style, chat-style fics... shhhhhhh!. Don't tell her there are other options - let her think she has to keep her wonderful!creations in her desk drawer.

Until, of course, she grows enough of a brain to start doing a google search to find other archives ...

Why in the world would you contribute to a website that has specific rules about posting in certain formats and then turn around and scream "foul! freedom of the press!" because you can't post in those formats?

And if you don't like it, go form your own website where you can post in any damn format you want.

Teh stupid, it boggles the mind.

A beautiful example of well-done script format fic.

While I'm all for cracking down on bullshit and find Ms. Thang's little hissy-fit hilarious...christ, is script format really worth cracking down on? There are things that make my eyes bleed MUCH worse than script format.

Wank: And this has to do with Mary Sues, how?

Off zee wank: Um, since when are all 2nd person stories 'interactive fics'? I've written and seen some 2nd person PoV stories that aren't interactive fics (The 'you' being refered to is sometimes a specific character, not the reader) and now they're going to be removed because of their PoV???

Way to go, FF.net! Now I'll tell my friend to stop paying for my account when it expires soon!

Choose your adventure and second person/you based are interactive entries.

Er, they seem to be banning second-person perspective here, not Sues. It's the interactive perspective, referring to 'you'; and they're banning interactive entries. They're calling it 'second person/you based' to clarify for people who don't know what second person perspective is.

...

I am horrified.

Eh...I think she's overreacting a bit, but I can see her point. While it will get rid of a lot of badfic (which is good) some good stuff that doesn't deserve to be purged may get hit too. There are some very good humor fics I've found that are in script format, after all, and there is, I think, a difference between chat format and script format. Hell, someone may have just wanted to write something that looked like an actual TV or movie script and put a lot fo work into it, and this sort of thing just lumps that together with something that was done in ten minutes by some random lazy person.

Still, Xing owns the site and can ban what he wants. But I can't really blame people for getting annoyed when ff.net keeps changing what is and isn't allowed ever few months (frankly, I think bans like this should just encompass what's written after the rule was added which would cause much less whining, but, eh, whatever).

It's times like this when I'm forced to remember that not everyone writes NC17!smut, and that lots of people still post their fics on ff.net.

Obviously, the solution here is more porn.

If people would just write more smut, no one would be on ff.net anymore, and we wouldn't be subjected to all this whining about Xing and his policies.

Plus, you know, there'd be more porn. And that has to be a good thing.
