Holy Crap! Dragonriders of Pern Wank!
I found this on one of my elsewhere fandom bboards, in their 'Pimp Your Website' section. I've included the text 'cause you can't get to the bboard directly unless you subscribe.

Morning Star Heights

On the planet Gaian, dragons have always held an awe for the people there. Though that awe died when the one thing that they were supposed to destroy forgot to show up: Spores. Spores are silver pods that fall from the sky, and will kill any organic thing. Only the fire breath of the dragons can kill it.

Its has been seven hundred years since the Spores were supposed to come. But the stars have righted their mistake, and are sending Spores Gaian's way again. People of the Heights recognize the coming threat, and with one fertile Empress to help produce dragons for the coming threat, Morning Star Heights is greatly undermanned.

They are looking for those brave souls that will dare to fly high upon their back to protect Gaian from the deadly Spores. They are looking in the Heights, Casltes, & Crafthalls alike.

Will you hear the dragons' call?

~ * Morning Star Heights * ~

Dragonriders of all colors need. As well as Crafters, at least 25 are Candidates, and Commonfolk.

A clutch is on the Sands! And what this?! Two surprises?!?!?!? We need at least 25 Candidates!

P.S. Its inspired by Pern, but takes place on a completely different planet & we have different dragon colors. Including the Purple dragon, it can be male or female.

'Inspired by'? Try snuck in, raped with a tent peg, and stole the stereo on the way out.

Wouldn't Anne McCaffrey be really upset about that? She bitched out the fanfic writers, what about the rpg?
And dude, "raped with a tent peg" - love it.

If you're gonna rip off an idea, at least have the grace to do it with SOME subtlety, that's all I've got to say. 'cause that thing is worse than a bad Hong Kong knock-off. (I happen to be rather fan of Hong Kong knock-offs, to be honest. They're funny and cheap.)

"rather fan?"

...Rather fond. Or a fan of.

I don't know which I was attempting. However, my brain felt they needed to be one, in a joyous union of nonsensical words. Whee and yay.

Heh. Anne McCaffrey is notoriously hard-handed against RPGs... you can't just randomly start one, they have to go through her approval and all kinds of rigmarole.

So it's understandable, really, even if this particular example really freaking lacks subtlety. >_>

That tent peg bit will *never* stop being funny. My little cousin was reading one of AM's books when she visited me last, and I just said, "she's nuts." Sadly, she's nuts in a way that is unsuitable for mixed company, so I wasn't able to back myself up--and she will continue to absorb the insanity.

I'm so totally going to create an original RPG about magical kids who go to a school in Scotland. On of them, a boy with a scar on his...cheek is responsible for vanquishing the...Dark Mage What's-His-Face, whos has recently risen from the dead. Now all characters have to pass their exams and defeat the Dark Mage again!

50,000 people have to join.

It's like Harry Potter, but we don't use wands; we use tree branches, and there's a House based on the Armadillo.

But do they really?

All the male riders have contraction honorifics, ie F'lar, F'lessan, etc.

And all the dragons have names that end in TH.

The purple dragon is mentioned as though it's some sort of huge draw. I know fuck-all about Pern, maybe purple dragons there have an orgasm breath weapon or something, but...purple is kind of a lame dragon color. I don't get it.

Pernese dragons have specific colors that do sort of matter. How shiny your dragon is determines many things such as: how much ass you can kick, how cool you are, how much political weight you carry, and how attractive you are to the gender of your choice. Of course, you kind of have to watch out for the fact that some dragons make you gay. Um...sort of. *cough*

So, they're kind of like car!penises, but....dragons.

Um...yeah...

Honestly I don't see a single drop of wank here. It might fit under 'fannish absurdity', but barely. All I see is a slightly silly AU rpg ad. Big deal.

All crazy-old-biddy wank aside, why on earth would you start an RPG that apparently just follows the storyline of a book?

I mean, why not just IM each other random passages of Dragonflight or something? It would take less time.

Maybe this is why I don't do RPGs...

I guess they want to be a part of the Dragonflight experience. However, whenever I've seen (or played in) that type of RPG, it doesn't quite work because nobody wants to play a hidebound old conservative; everyone wants to espouse the ideas that they know are right.

And I just recently decided to do a reread of the Pern books, which I probably hadn't read since I was fifteen. It's..interesting to read them now.
