Screw 'uncut', gimme the machete
So evidently, FUNimation is seeking fan input on a possible anime channel, that would focus on "Uncut, English dubbed anime"

People talk about it for a bit, with differing views of the company

But then Rinoa desu! posts with And isn't "uncut dubbing" usually an oxymoron? :/, and Nekoi agrees with her.

Arronius points out that all dubbing is is replacing the audio track, which is, like, basic knowledge.

Rinoa Desu!: Not. True. Don't make me force Nekoi to tell you the oh-so-lovely Shaman King story @___@

And if you people want original anime without having to read subs, learn Japanese! >_@ Ganbatte~

Arronius: the term cut comes from editing when they cut parts out to make it conform to a time frame with corresponding commercial breaks or when they remove parts such as exceptionaly violence

Uncut is frame for frame exactly how it should look, audio tracks are a seperate matter

Rinoa Desu!: I know~~~~ what the term means, I'm not supid (despite what you all might think). The entire storyline can be changed by a tweak of the dialouge. I'm not going to argue with you people about what is and isn't cutting anymore, because no one will see my point.

And when Arronius posts again, pointing out that the 'literal meaning' of uncut that RD! and Nekoi were using is incorrect, RD! screams RAWR! *flails* Just give it up, you don't get it >_@

Yes, nothing says "Listen to me, I have valid points" quite like gratutious funny faces, does it?

Yeah, it's so much harder for them to type out "It's okay, I can see their parachutes!" than to say it. That's why subtitle translations are more literal than dub translations, not because they know the people watching subs want a more literal translation. It's not as though they'd know that fans watching an anime channel would also demand a more accurate translation.

Also, how much do I want that channel? SO much.

Dear God, YES. We don't even have I-Channel in my area though so my hopes are faint at best.

I would love to get that channel too. And there might be a good chance they'll show the un-cut versions of Shaman King, ONE PIECE, and Yu-Gi-Oh.

I'd settle for AMV's channel, but nooooo, the closest thing to an anime channel we get in Colorado is Cartoon Network.

I'm not going to learn a second language to read/watch anything, I don't care if it's anime, manga, or the fucking Bible.

I do plan to learn Spanish someday, but that's because A) I can earn more money, B) I can use it in my daily life, and I don't mean the part where I talk with other fangirls, C) it kind of makes sense when you're learning it, and D) it's sexy.

Seriously. And serious Japanese students thank you. I hate rabid otaku fangirls so. They consituted about half of my Japanese class last year and I wanted to stab them.

This is why I don't watch anime anymore except for one series and know better than to talk to "TEH REAL FANZ"

Sadly, I used to be one of them.

Ah yes, here we go yet again with sub purists complaining about even the SLIGHTEST most comparatively miniscule alteration made to a line of dialouge in the process of dubbing an anime in order to conform to timing of the lip flaps. Sub elitists won't be satisfied with even the most extremely well done, well translated dubs that are near-identical to the original Japanese version they were adapted from. OMG!!! He said "that's impressive" instead of the much more eloquently put "that's cool". Or he remarked "that woman is bad luck" whereas in the PERFECT 100% accurate sub he actually phrased it "that woman causes a great deal of misfortune to us all". BLASPHEMY, I tells yahs!! DEATH TO ALL LIME DUUHBS !111!! (and yes, I have in fact heard people call them "lime duhhbs". I wish I was capable of exaggeration in this case, but alas).

I'd really like to point to some of these sub-worshippers the fact that many dubs that have been coming out more recently have actually, dare I say it, started IMPROVING upon the original Japanese dialog. For a perfect example look no further than Cowboy Bebop.

Boring Ed in the sub:
"Gotta wear socks, for going out."

Truly radical Edward in the dub:
"High socks are cool, gotta wear 'em outside!" *proceeds to tumble over after putting on the socks and decides to give up*

Now tell me, which one sounds more like Jet Black to you people?

Sub:
(boring robotic tone) "He may do as he pleases".

Dub:
"He can do whatever the HELL he wants!"

Not to mention those lines of dialog that sound just plain awkward in the original Japanese...

Scientist guy (in session 2) subbed: "If you want, punch him a dozen times."

Scientist guy (in session 2) dubbed: "Give him the once over, in fact do it twice!"

This amuses me to no end. It really does. *holds close precious Bebop DVDs to her busom*

I would LOVE that channel; however, I would love it more if they also had a subbed block. (I use it to practice my Japanese. Really.)

I don't really care if it's subbed or dubbed myself. I DID learn Japanese in part because I am an anime fan (also because it's the hardest language for an English speaker to learn), BUT I like to compare the Japanese version to the English dub to see what translator's changes were made, and what cultural references were changed to be more fitting to an American audience. I find this process fascinating...especially in translating Japanese accents to equivalent English ones.

And besides, the subtitles are far from perfect. And very few people can learn Japanese without driving themselves insane. (My first-year class had 13 people in it out of a total campus population of 400; by second year it was down to 4.)

But hey, I'm a stupid linguist who isn't OMG TEH TRU FAN!!!11!. Never mind I'm teaching myself German partially so I can listen to Rammstein...>3
