Over on CrystalWank2004, we've been alerted by almostnever that our fave photoshopper is up to her old tricks again.

It hasn't gotten wanky yet (still quite fresh), but we know where this is going to go. If anyone has a copy of the original picture this is photoshopped from, please post.

Would have added this to the old Crystal thread, but its reached its limit of comments allowed.

ETA: Here is the original the picture is based on. She actually links to it in her post (somehow missed that), but I've uploaded it to my own album in case it disappears from the post.

it doesn't have to go there, really. and while i'm with Ces in that i think she should be denounced and reported if she ever attemtps to sell something that isn't a genuine piece of art again, this pic seems to me like it could very well have been lightboxed only. which isn't the same as photoshopped. granted, i'm not an expert at all...

i'd have put this in the rant or lounge, myself. this place really *isn't* [Bad username: fandom_futurewank] nor [Bad username: fandom_crystalball] nor even [info]fw_preemptive...

But I highly doubt the lightbox theory as Crystal states she dragged the picture to the park with her to work on.

She posted the reference pic and, upon asking, said that it was not done freehand. Even outlined exactly how she did it. So, not so wanky imo.

During her "explanation":
- I needed a guideline for Dom's face, easy way to make one, photoshop., and
- This was the part of the picture was traced with the base. The rest of it was entirely freehand.

And later, once her techniques are brought to question (honest, nice question, I might add):
- Not a bit of this image is made in photoshop if that is what you are questioning.

...ow. I think my brain broke.

OH God no, I dont know if I have enough energy stored up for more of Crystal.

She has a big wave of little teenage minnions on her livejournal that praise her constantly for her "sketches" so that's why she wont stop making them. I dont know what's so special, I can make the same thing in 2.5 seconds.

Ahhhh, good old CrystalWank. I love how she implies that she did the drawing all on her own in her initial post by talking about the pencils and paper she used, and how she worked on it most of the day in the park....but when grilled about it, the majority of the work was pieced together from more than one Dom photo using Photoshop.

CrystalWank is like herpes - it flares up every now and then but never completely goes away......

I'm confused as to all the praise. You don't even have to be in double digits to do that. She seems to have art training exactly equivalent to my little brothers.

Granted, it IS past the "we thought it was a forest and it's an underwater scene" phase they were going through a couple years back. So. Uh. Kudos, Crystal.

Hi all,

I agree with you all that presenting a photoshopped pic as one actually drawn with pencils is worth the wank, but all of this leaves me with a question.

What I see very often in about all fandoms, is that a very big bunch of 'fan-artists' isn't capable of doing anything else than copying (parts of) movie-images or actor portraits and selling it off as 'art'. Some of them are even Praised Beyond All Praise for doing so, while it's soooo easy to copy something. Anyone with a scanner and a printer is capable of doing so! This sort of 'art' does not have any artistic value at all - it's just *copying an image that already exists*.

This said, I'd like to ask if it is really so important whether an 'artist' actually uses her pencils to meddle with an existing photograph, or computer-tools like Photoshop (we all here agree that all Crystal's 'artwork' is based on photo-copying, don't we?). I think it's basically the same thing.

The fact is that a lot of people *admire* copied artwork, actually thinking it's difficult to do so - which it isn't at all. Those struggling with their own original interpretations very often don't receive a fraction of the feedback copy-artists receive, and if so, very often of the "OMG U suxxx your Mery deosnt looOk like DoM ut aL"-kind. So, the temptation to resist to join the CopyCats is sometimes hard ... ;-)

Sorry for posting anonymously, but as I am being someone who tries to move away from CopyCat-art, I'd rather not have my inbox floaded with hatemail after posting this. Hope you understand - and looking forward to see your ideas on this subject!

So, reading, I came to a conclusion. She's just ... stupid. The head IS pastede on, and it IS photoshopped, so TECHNICALLY it's not her own art.

(Note that if I am getting ANY details wrong, it is because I have been lurking forever, but by the time I came upon CrystalWank, it was so long and complicated, and I am a lazy ass bitch.)

Well, yes, it's art in the sense of photo manipulation, but NO, it's not a sketch. And ... Yeah ... DUH.

It's the return of Crystal Wank! Oh, I'm so happy!

This is something I wanted to say on the Wank Thread of Doom, but never got around to. Well, I'm ranting saying it now omg.

Personally, I don't believe this female can draw at all. Why? Because I spent years doing what she professes to do - copying photographs and pictures in magazines that I happened to like. I would copy them as exactly as I could, drawing a line down the middle of the original picture and using a set-square, for fuck's sake, to measure up, down and across to every. tiny. bump. and. fold. The results were very close to the originals, but never exact. I could have just traced them, but omg never!

Several decades on, what this means, of course, is that while I can now draw you (points to a random poster) freehand and pretty damn exactly if you stood in front of me for a while, I would have a lot of trouble putting you in a setting and giving you, say, a fantasy background. Because I have virtually no experience of putting together pictures of my own. Anything I do try is always far less impressive than anything I've merely copied. The point of all my blathering is this: I could, if I wanted to, merely Photoshop (or in my case, Paint Shop Pro) a few pictures and put them up on the web as real sketches, simply to get some quick "oh my god, you're brilliant" praise. But I wouldn't dream of it, because that praise wouldn't fucking MEAN anything to me when compared with favourable comments over something that I'd actually drawn with my own hands and spent days or weeks over. It wouldn't be half so satisfying and frankly I'd feel like a sodding fraud.

So my personal opinion based on me is this: Everyone likes praise. Crystal is a praise whore. But Crystal pretended that Photoshopped photographs were real sketches done by her own fair hand. Therefore Crystal can't fucking draw. If she could, she would, and we would never have heard of her, and Crystal Wank wouldn't exist. *considers that. Noooomummy!*

I wish my ass face tits ass was pastede on yay. 'Cos then I could, like, resize it 'n stuff.
