Wanky or just me?
From the MediaWest*Con website:

We hope members will respect our right to control the use of the MediaWest*Con name.  We have not authorized any online discussion groups/lists.  The MediaWest*Con name (or abbreviations) should not be used in the title of any such group/lists.

Well now, I suppose that means we should disband or rename this group right quick. What should we call ourselves then, Fen-Going-To-That-Con-In-Lansing-That-Cannot-Be-Named?

I'm sure you're fine, because you didn't use the all important "*" in your groups title. I mean, that's *Important!*

I decided that last year was my last year they were getting my money. I was going since 1998 and every year it just changed more and more and I enjoyed it less and less.

It's the (or abbreviations) part that gets me. I mean, how far does that go? *Con = violation?

I'd vote tentatively for wanky -- it's not as if they can copyright every possible permutation of their name. And it's not as if the PTBs of most fannish enterprises bother to try banning names like "HarryPotterfans," much less "HPfans."

The only legit reason for concern that I can think of is if they're afraid people might think a discussion group is officially run by the con itself (and therefore mod notices might mistakenly be taken as official word from Con staff, etc.) But that's easily taken care by a notice that a group is unofficial and not sanctioned by the con staff.

My guess would be that this stems from the occasional problem of people who start their own 'urban legends' about how the con is run instead of taking whatever questions or comments they have to the con com. (One of my pet peeves in any case are folks who go around making up their own versions of something instead of just finding out from the source. I have to deal with that at work as it is.)

Personally the worst problems I have seen at MWC were caused by the total lack of common sense at the old hotel it was held at--the new hotel is more than accomodating.
As soon as the holidays are over, I start looking forward to it. It's the only time all year I get to hang out with some of my long-distance friends.

(And no I am not on the con staff, just a long time attendee.)
