slash sux! so sez msallegro It's been awhile, but there's finally some MsA wank worthy of FW. In which MsA rates slash and slash writers who aren't her, and finds them grossly wanting. That's right, MsA has a few complaints to make about the amateur fiction written by hobbyists and made available for free online: seems a lot of it just isn't that good, shockingly enough! Watch as she expounds upon the failings of badfic as though 1, she's the first person to notice this and 2, her remarks apply to ALL slash, because it all sucks, especially that pretentious crap that isn't hardcore NC-17. Some of her best generalizations: I stumbled on slash thinking I had finally found My People only to find that they weren't, in fact, a damned thing like me at all. They were just little girls who wanted to write about men acting like themselves because actual adult gay men scare the shit out of them. It's not written to be about actual males, it's written by inexperienced young girls for inexperienced young girls. What it is is people writing pretentious, overblown romance novels without characters with breasts If I want to read good stories without graphic sex scenes, I'll read actual novels by actual professional writers, not this schlocky romance novel crap written by 17 year olds. I just don't get why all these authors have to take it all So Seriously, especially when what they're writing is so incredibly bad. realize some of these authors really want to be professional writers, and I don't get why they're wasting their time writing, essentially, bad romance novels instead of taking actual writing classes and writing real fiction. Most slash writers are, quite simply, too young and inexperienced with men to be able to write them authentically. Lord, I wish headers for fics included the age of the author, so I could skip over anything that's written by anyone under 25. Actually, I wish headers were far more detailed in general. I usually avoid anything rated less than an R but even then I still have to sort through a lot of stuff which isn't fic but just some college kid trying to impress people with her use of present tense and a thesaurus. Extra points for her description of a LotR epic, widely known for scenes in which Merry and Pippin sobbingly declare their love for each other, as "a brilliant story... and one in which the characters behave realistically and honestly." And for her implication that the only reason her clearly superior slash was not worshipped was because everyone in fandom was too stupid and inexperienced to appreciate it. Other contradictions abound, too many to adequately sum up... go check it out! |
