slash sux! so sez msallegro
It's been awhile, but there's finally some MsA wank worthy of FW.

In which MsA rates slash and slash writers who aren't her, and finds them grossly wanting.

That's right, MsA has a few complaints to make about the amateur fiction written by hobbyists and made available for free online: seems a lot of it just isn't that good, shockingly enough! Watch as she expounds upon the failings of badfic as though 1, she's the first person to notice this and 2, her remarks apply to ALL slash, because it all sucks, especially that pretentious crap that isn't hardcore NC-17.

Some of her best generalizations:

I stumbled on slash thinking I had finally found My People only to find that they weren't, in fact, a damned thing like me at all. They were just little girls who wanted to write about men acting like themselves because actual adult gay men scare the shit out of them.

It's not written to be about actual males, it's written by inexperienced young girls for inexperienced young girls.

What it is is people writing pretentious, overblown romance novels without characters with breasts

If I want to read good stories without graphic sex scenes, I'll read actual novels by actual professional writers, not this schlocky romance novel crap written by 17 year olds. I just don't get why all these authors have to take it all So Seriously, especially when what they're writing is so incredibly bad.

realize some of these authors really want to be professional writers, and I don't get why they're wasting their time writing, essentially, bad romance novels instead of taking actual writing classes and writing real fiction.

Most slash writers are, quite simply, too young and inexperienced with men to be able to write them authentically. Lord, I wish headers for fics included the age of the author, so I could skip over anything that's written by anyone under 25. Actually, I wish headers were far more detailed in general. I usually avoid anything rated less than an R but even then I still have to sort through a lot of stuff which isn't fic but just some college kid trying to impress people with her use of present tense and a thesaurus.

Extra points for her description of a LotR epic, widely known for scenes in which Merry and Pippin sobbingly declare their love for each other, as "a brilliant story... and one in which the characters behave realistically and honestly." And for her implication that the only reason her clearly superior slash was not worshipped was because everyone in fandom was too stupid and inexperienced to appreciate it.

Other contradictions abound, too many to adequately sum up... go check it out!

I was hanging around with "adult gay men" when I was fifteen. Many of them were fucking my also-fifteen-year-old best friend. Despite what she likes to believe, MsA is not the ONLY SLASH RITER EVAR!! to actually know gay men.

This is wanky is so very many ways!

Some of the best fanfic I've read is by astonishingly young women. Kaydeefalls and andrealyn and jubilancy and kate and gabbyhope and calico for goodness sakes. How can she she be so, um, ageist?

There's fabulous fanfic in all ratings, from non-sexual to incredibly hot NC17 sex scenes. It's not the format that matters, it's the writer and their inspiration. Every time I think I'm getting bored, something new comes that wows me.

Many of the guys I know angst like mad, though of course not like teenage girls. But when they stop being stoic, oh my, they're whiney.

Has she ever read published gay male porn? Most of it is truly awful, much worse than the average fanfic.

Fanfic may not be to her taste, (not that she ever defines what that is), but that doesn't make it bad. Fanfic, slash and RPS are not monolithic, they are widely varied in all ways from tone to language to approach.

Some stories would be considered art and erotica in other contexts, others would be binned as awkward amateur fiction. I don't know why she thinks the choices are 'art' or 'porn' -- I like stories myself, with interesting characters in interesting situations. Never thought I'd find them in fanfic, but here I am, and I'm not leaving.

Oh, and one thing about RPS? At least we writers and readers know the difference between fiction and life.

also, this might be the first in a series of wanky comments, just because there's so. much. stupid. to have at. *glee!*

"Every now and then I run across a fic where someone writes Elijah as an actual intelligent 23 year old man, capable of making his own decisions and-- gasp-- TOPPING and I want to send that author my firstborn because it's so rare to see him written respectfully like that"

Mmm. You could still argue my own [info]elijah is a total girl - he would agree with you and bemoan his 'modern sensitivity', really, he would. With a grin. You could argue that I don't write him respectfully, although as it happens, I do.

I'll be waiting for that firstborn... *sharpens knives*

Maybe she needs to go and read Feminism, Psychoanalysis, and the Study of Popular Cultere by Constance Penley or any of the several articles by Henry Jenkins about fanfiction. Or look at Kate Bolin's research at dymphna.net

Or just, you know, actually get off her soapbox long enough to examine the fandom and not make generalisations.

I'm loving the whole 'men don't angst--men suck it up and deal with it!' thing. Yeah, because we all know that only women are whiny babies, and men are stoic and never show emotions.

I sort of see the point, that a lot of the time the character doesn't feel authentic for whatever reason, but guys do whine and complain too.

I don't know much abotu this MsA person, but she seems incredibly condescending. '*I* want to read MATURE stories; not the crap that doesn't even have detailed sex in it. And since it's not what I want, it sucks.' Phbt to that. Why does slash have to be all about the porn/sex? That's pretty insulting, actually...if a story is based around a same-sex relationship, it has to be NC-17 or its worthless?

Gee, someone's a little bitter.

Let's face it, you can't dictate art. It's art. It's one of those strange nebulous concepts like beauty. It's in the eye of the beholder. One man's trash is another's treasure and any other cute cliche you can think up. It's one thing to sit there and rant about other people's taste in art, but there's really nothing you can do about it is there? Stick to what you like and stay away from what you don't.

As far as fanfiction goes, the way I see it is this. Writing is a creative process and creativity equals art. Not all of it's original, or even very good, but it is art, on the most basic level. Of course, there's always going to be those people that try too hard, or don't try hard enough. You're always going to have some who are more talented than others. There's always going to be a wide variety, and that's a good thing. You might have to wade through a lot of junk, but at least you know what not to write don't you? Remember what they say about variety.

And to her reasonings on fanfiction and reading novels goes. Newsflash! People read fanfiction because they enjoy reading about familiar characters, which means they've probably read al of the original materials on said characters and are now exploring other fans' perspectives and ideas. Why? Because it's fun and a hell of a lot cheaper than buying paperbacks.

There's just so much to snipe at in that little rant. I could touch the porn subject, but I don't feel like getting that sticky. I really don't feel like wasting my energy. I think some Paxil and a cold beer might do that girl good, either that or a hammer applied liberally to the back of her skull.

Those of us who want mature, graphic stories are pretty much SOL unless we write it ourselves

Let's take a look at her "mature, graphic stories," shall we?

These are a few quotes from MsA's New Roles Dom/Elijah series, gathered by Ces and I when this wanked on [info]dl_anon:

He chanced a glimpse over at Elijah, leaning up against a tree just behind the camera crew. Tears were streaming down his face, puddling his makeup up in cloudy little drips down to his chin... Elijah looked up at him with wet eyes, the fading sunlight making them glitter. He was quiet. And then he nodded, and buried his face in Dom’s shoulder and broke out into heavy sobs.

*

More than once, Dom found himself yet again a soft shoulder for Elijah to cry on, and, though he wished for someone he could do that with as well, he supported the boy as best he could.

*

Elijah’s head popped up and he looked Dom straight in the eye for one bewildered moment before bursting into manaical giggles. He threw an arm around his friend and kissed him solidly on the cheek. “You’re good for me sometimes, you know that?”

Dom blushed. “Well, I try. You deserve being good for, after all.”

*

Dom smiled again. “Well, I guess I’ll have to give it a go then, eh?” he chuckled for a moment, and then broke into tears.

Ian put an arm around him, and pulled him into his shoulder. Dom sobbed for quite some time.

*

Dom was crushed, even though he understood. “I’ll back off. I mean, not that I was really in your face before, I hope. But… I don’t think I can stop loving you or wanting you. I won’t bug you about it, of course, but I hope it’s not a huge problem for you to know how I feel. I don’t want you to think every time I hug or kiss you that I’m trying to do something.” His eyes started burning as he fought off crying.

“I won’t. I know I won’t.” Elijah grasped Dom’s hand and held it tightly, “I trust you, Dom. And I love you. I don’t want that to go away at all. You mean a lot to me, and I want our friendship to continue. I just--” he stopped for a moment, searching for Dom's eyes. “I think I need some time. We have that, right?”

Dom nodded, making a tear spill down his cheek when he didn’t mean for it to.

Elijah stood up and bent over Dom, heartbreak in his voice. “Don’t cry, please?” he said, his own pain evident in his tone, He brushed a tear away from a flushed cheek.

Of course, that made the waterworks continue with more force, and Dom sobbed a bit, grasping hard at Elijah’s hand.

You know, I think my favorite part of these posts is where she explains what she considers "realistic" fanfiction (besides her own, of course, and I've already quoted plenty of that above).

THOU?! A story in which an apparently mildly retarded Pippin and a pedophilic Merry spend quite literally pages sobbing hysterically as they declare their undying love for each other that Merry has felt since he saw a newborn Pippin in the cradle? I realize a lot of people adore this story, though it baffles me, but anyone who thinks this is a realistic representation of how men actually act is on some serious crack.

I stumbled on slash thinking I had finally found My People only to find that they weren't, in fact, a damned thing like me at all.

And thank Rod for that!

How many times must this rant be ranted? Christ.

Yes. I write slash for porn. Except I don't write porn.

And I know nothing of gay people. Except I'm gay.

You must be a gay man yourself to write male slash. You have to be straight to write het and in order to write femslash you must be a lesbian.

So all I can write is femslash now.

Okay then.

*goes off to write lesbian porn femslash*

And yet more MsA insanity on the subject (courtesy of crazylegs, who posted the whole thing on [info]dl_anon).

She's on a roll this week! Methinks someone was feeling ignored.

I just don't get why all these authors have to take it all So Seriously, especially when what they're writing is so incredibly bad.

Uh huh. This coming from a broad who's been writing the wankiest, most horrendously pretentious and egotistical fanfic I think I've ever seen, for the last - what is it now, three years?

Takes one to know one.

Is anyone else a little scared of what might happen if she ever does find Her People?
