My Ship Has Artistic Subtlety
All this [info]dierondie wank has introduced me to parts of the HP fandom that I never knew existed, virgin territories with unexploited wank.

From the self-aggrandizing fannish absurdities file, I present to you the Artistic Subtlelty, The Key to See H/Hr thread at Portkey.org. In which a lot of Harry/Hermione shippers talk about how they are true artistes.

Gillian Halliwell starts things off by wondering why some people ship Harry/Hermione and others don't.

So, that got me thinking; what is in the H/Hr relationship that we see and that other people, at first view - to say it in a way - doesn't?
Then I started digging into our own ponderings on the H/Hr relationship, and realised something that, up until a certain point seems really significant.
There's an artistic subtlelty in H/Hr!
Take a look at ourselves, for an example,
There's Nic, who plays the Piano.
There's Sarah, who sings. (And here, I think Joyce does too, correct me if I'm wrong, sorry!)
There's Vic and Maria, who draw
There's me, Ballet dance and such.
There's Gil, who, as himself says "has always been a frustrated writer, now is an stablished fanfiction author'
There's Jim and the photo thing....
And if any of you are involved in the arts (or the design, which I find counts) and I haven't listed you, list yourself!
So? What's the pattern? What does this have to do with H/Hr?
Simply, artists see something in the world that other people doesn't.
When performing arts, the artists develop a certain sensibility to certain things about life that other people just doesn't see!
That's the reason why you'll always find it easier to fill a Stadium for a football game, that fill a theatre (half the capacity) for Opera!
There lies the thing!
The whole globalization thingy, it doesn't imply to globalise the artistic sensibility. Actually, because that's something that can't possibly be done.
Two artists wouldn't experience the same feeling when watching "Pierrot's Death" from Matisse, but they will understand the meaning! While other people, who wouldn't place the feeling first, wouldn't get the meaning!
Do I make myself clear?
Put it like this; you can have the whole world reading Harry Potter. And they will all follow the story, and keep with it.
BUT! Only those who are able to experience the feelings of the story will get to the real meaning. Only the people who can actually put on Harry's shoes and feel, before attemting to understand will get the true meaning!

Hermione's Phoenix replies:
Artistic subtlety. Yes, I do think that many of us have that. We're constantly looking beyond the so-called eminent ship to the one that makes more sense. The one that feels right. H/Hr shippers are people who don't just look at the surface but are ready to find the core, the meaning. To them Harry Potter isn't just a pastime.

It's not a pastime, it's a religion!

laurie_strode22:
Some people look at a painting and say, 'look, how pretty,' but others can get the feeling the artist was trying to convey and see that a painting that looks 'pretty' is really sad and one that looks 'dark' and 'depressing' is really beautiful. If that makes any sense...

Harry Potter is not pretty! It is depressing and beautiful!

Cara de Luna:
Some say the artists have a diferent sensibility, feeling, precision of the things. I think it's true. They tend to see the world from some kind of a diferent perspective. They tend to feel more than see.

Maybe it's what we do. We feel the realtionship between H/Hr instead of trying to see it. R/Hr say that they see that relationship. We say we don't coz we can't feel you know?

We always look for the feelings hiden in the actions, the way they act, even in the words and the way they say them.

It's all about perception...and feelings.

Feelings, nothing but feelings.

Eulology:
It does seem that more people with some deep understanding of artistic sensibilities have an easier time picking up on the underlying H/Hr clues. I'm a classical pianist for the majority of my life by the way and I like to dabble in some amateur medieval art (I have a small gallery in elfwood.)

H/Hr. It's like classical music. In a way.

A lot of noise but totally incomprehensible - just like a piece by Charles Ives.

Like subject verb agreement?

That's fine. I don't know what 'subtlelty' is, but it's fine. At least they're not claiming it's artistic subtlety.

This is giving me an identity crisis. I've always fancied myself as somewhat artistic, meaning I play a couple musical instruments and write a lot (of crap), but I don't see the H/Hr love. Am I not truly artistic then? ACK! Don't take away my 'artistic subtlelty!'

You know, the logical fallacy burns. Just because a lot of fans of a ship meet a loose definition of artist (one most of my friends meet, as does mcuh of fandom period) doesn't mean that being an artist means you will see the beauty of Harry/Hermione. I mean, do they have an sample of random Ron/Hermione, Harry/Draco, Harry/Ginny, Harry/Luna, Herminone/Ginny, Harry/Snape, my God Harry Potter has a lot of pairings... well, do they have samples of Harry/not-Hermione, Hermiome/not-Harry, and We Don't Give a Damn About Harry and Hermione's Romantic Life fans that show these people are less artistic?

According to some Portkey members, they are more intelligent and educated than R/Hr shippers...
[info]topaz
2004-07-31 01:27 am UTC (link)
Just take a look at this thread:

http://talk.portkey.org/index.php?showtopic=10354

Members are speculating how they are much more intelligent and educated than R/Hr shippers.

Here's some of what the original poster said:
Anyway we were discussing and we came to the conclusion that perhaps people with higher degrees or maybe who are more naturally intelligent tend to see H/Hr. Everyone at the table knew several other people (Doctors, Lawyers and even a Rocket Scientist!) who all shipped H/Hr. Of course I first had to explain what 'shipping' was. But they all agreed that they loved Pumpkin Pie!

And we were trying to think of anyone with a similar background who ships R/Hr. And we couldn't think of one person. I mean we could name several people who like R/Hr, but they didn't have degrees or high profile jobs. Don't get me wrong, they're great people (despite their odd shipping habits) but I really started to wonder if perhaps (and I hope this doesn't get taken the wrong way), people who have higher degrees and are more educated tend to ship H/Hr.

Gee, I guess having my Bachelors and Master's degree must not count for much, as I see both R/Hr and H/G :)

Ugh, now I'm tempted to post on that thread, and I can't becuase R/Hr's aren't allowed to post in that section. I've been a member of that board for a while now, and most of the posts in the regular H/Hr section aren't that wanky. I could possible see H/Hr, but that's because of my tendency to overanalyze, not my passion for art and drawing.

It'd be pointless yet interesting to sort various Potter shippers by Myers-Briggs types. I'm an INTJ and I like Harry/Luna.

Man, this is funny for me, and I'm a H/Hr shipper. Actually, I'm a trio shipper, but who's checking. ;)

Anyone who declares their ship is inherently better or more intelligent, I don't care WHAT fandom or what excuse they have...is just idiotic.

Does anyone else think that "subtlety," "subtlety," "subtiltee," "soob-titty," is kinda...overrated?

Especially in a Harry Potter ship debate?

Sometimes I think the "if it's not SUBTLE its CRRRRRAP!" battle cry is simply the sound of spines snapping as some pseudo-intellekshual ninnies try to get their mouths around their collective dongs.

Yes we all know what a place SUBTLETY has in books for children. Books in which the bad guy always gives a twenty minute speech detailing his entire Nefarious Plan to his nemesis instead of actually just killing him.

Scott Evil will bitchslap you now. Please form a single-file line to the left.

Has anyone ever done a scientifically valid study of fan(atic) demographics? Such as, the percentage in general who can reasonably be described as mentally ill... how many hardcore hard cases are profoundly disturbed, etc?

What I love about the HP shipper wars is that everyone is dead set on characters eventually hooking up with kids they may or may not have a crush on when they're teenagers. This isn't to say that some people don't marry their high school sweethearts, but man, a crush is a crush is a crush. I teach teenagers, and I have also been one, and as I recall, in between puberty and marriage there's a lot of crushing and lust and unrequited stuff, along with snogging and shagging people with whom you have no intention of settling down.

It just seems a little...preemptive to call any shots now. Good god, even when I was thirteen and had my first major crush, I think I would have been mortified at the thought of actually marrying him. I just wanted him to make me some mixed tapes and maybe make out in the corner at school dances. *weeps*

And just to prove that teenagers have poor judgement, they were Def Leppard tapes. *shudder*

Only the people who can actually put on Harry's shoes and feel, before attemting to understand will get the true meaning!

Ew. I'm not putting on shoes that were probably once Dudley's!

Simply, artists see something in the world that other people doesn't.

In this case, because the other side of their brains don't work.

And to bring it back to the originating subject, in a way, we all know that at least the R/Hr shippers have to be wrong.

'Cause Ron is going to DIE, remember?

Also, [info]amand_r's comment a few above? Word.

I was just browsing the requirements for my school's performing arts program. Bear in mind that I'm not a performer- I'm a lowly media student/women's studies minor focusing on television history...and I don't understand the arts and to a lesser extent, the crafts and to an even lesser extent, the designs. In fact, I nearly got expelled after I tried to globalize the artistic sensibility.

But I digress. What I'm trying to say is I simply can't believe it that it's now an audition requirement to support H/Hr. Apparently, people who don't support this ship simply do not have the facilities to interpret music, dance and "Pierrot's Death" from Matisse.

(Well, that was distressing. This wank is so mind-melting, I can't come up with anything something better. Sorry everybody.)
