Harry Potter is liberal propaganda!
My First Wank *booty slap*

Stormcloud Empath can't understand how you can
Lub Harry and be Conservative!

Up Next: "The Prisoner of Azkaban" vs The Death Penalty!

*Goes back to singing "This Land is Your Land" from JibJab.com*

Mini Wank so far, but it's bound to grow.

ETA:

Stormcloud(like a true politician)has Flip Flopped on the issue!

I feel very much enlightened now, actually. However foolish it may have made me look, I'm glad of the response this thread has received.

That's telling those mean right wingers. *nods fiercely*

Liberals. Do. Not. Like. Big. Government. We just like responsible government.

Take THAT Elephant party! *karate chop*

Potter/Voldemort in 2008!

"The answer can lie in multiple things: Not reading with an intent to seek out allegory and analogies; not interpreting any allegorical elements in terms of liberal goals; and, if they do come to an interpretation akin to the OP's, not accepting an allegorical book as having any persuasive value."

Conservatives, they're like H/R shippers in a way.

It's simple, really. All the conservatives know, in their heart of hearts, that Voldemort is going to kick Harry's ass. What's not to love?

And it would help if her comparisions made any sort of *sense*.

I mean last I checked intermarriage between wizards and muggles was pretty well accepted by the populace/

I mean I think it was either Ron or Hagrid who said if wizards hadn't started hooking up with muggles they would've died out years ago.

Also I thought Fudge didn't *want* to get involved in the war with Voldemort to the point where he pretty much denied such a think was happening.

But hey I lean to the right and I like HP so I guess I must not exsist according to the OP.

You'll love this then:

The main problem with all of that is that conservative Americans don't look for deeper meaning in things like books -- look at their propensity for wanting to ban them. I doubt any of them who read HP would see the awfulness of the discrimation in the books, much less how it reflects real issues. Many conservatives don't believe that discrimation exists. Really. I've met some of them.

And I have never, ever come across any literary character so blatantly, proudly liberal as Hermione Granger. Hello, SPEW anyone?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the whole SPEW thing seen as a bit of a joke and written off by the other characters? Even Dumbledore?

And I don't find it very fair that Republican is now parrell with Conservative. That would be like saying all Democrats are liberal, which I know isn't true.

You mean you don't know? We rounded up all the moderates years ago, and shot them.

Of course I'm an evol littlest liberal who saw some parallels between Umbridge and the current US admin in OotP, so maybe I shouldn't be talking *g*

Fudge won't admit he's wrong, even if it means leaving his people in mortal peril.

It may just be a pet peeve of mine, but why is it that it seems like everyone ignores Fudge's change of position at the end of The Order of the Phoenix? You know, where he admits he's wrong and stops opposing Dumbledore?

Oh, and I've always seen SPEW as Hermione's flaw. Not in that she's wrong per say, but because she doesn't understand House Elves. Rather, she blindly insist that she knows what's right for them.

Since we're all over-interpretating kiddie books here...

[joins wank]

the whole plot of Muggle-born vs. pure-blood is a lesson against discrimination. Take any social debate: how about gay marriage? Isn't the parallel a little obvious?

*blinkblink* You mean, in JKR's world either all wizards or all Muggles are gay and Voldemort is the pope?
Yay, go slashers!

Cornelius Fudge in OotP was too much like Bush/Blair
No, if he'd been Bush the Wizard War would already have started. If he'd been Blair, he would've hang on to every word Dumbledore said and immediatelly start spreading false rumors about how crazy and dangerous the Death Eaters are... Hmm. Those might not neccesarily be false.

character so blatantly, proudly liberal as Hermione Granger.

And I have rarely seen a more annoying little besserwisser character. She reminds me of the brat in Narnia, though it was years since I read those... Eustace or whatshisname.
Also, from where I stand - so far left that Bush & co would probably brand me communist and send me into Iraqui exile if I'd been american - Hermione has strong socialist tendencies. She thinks everyone should be equal; check. She thinks we have a responsibility and duty to care for each other and the weak and opressed; check. She wants people to organize and stand together against the opression; check. She frequently thinks she knows better than the workers House Elves; check.
Ergo, Hermione is a democratic commie.

I have always identified with Hermione - we're both bookish, unconventional types.
She's not so unconventional. She's just a above-average smart nerd

The main problem with all of that is that conservative Americans don't look for deeper meaning in things like books

Nooo... I'd say the main problem is that some of you wankers are looking for meanings far too high up your own arses.

That Stormcloud person dizzies me. I tried to explain what the conservative spin on various bits of HP, and frankly much of what I wrote there doesn't represent *my* views, and she answered by arguing the points themselves. Someone should really point her to a political debate community, where she will be untrammeled by trying to pretend she's talking about Harry Potter.

I've noticed that both conservatives and liberals like to take issues that really belong to neither party, and claim them for their own in a debate. For instance, Educational Freedom, as brought up in that thread, is not an issue that either the Republican or Democratic party has a better record on in the US. Most intelligent people I know support educational freedom in idea, even if they disagree on how to go about it, whatever their political affiliation.

As for conservatives being racist- yes, a great deal of them are. So are liberals. I cannot count the number of liberals I've known that talk a good talk about racial equality, and then complain about the greedy and arrogant jews, or curse their stupid wetback neighbors. The truth is that most people are subconconsciously racist, and I think that those that try to deny that there's a possibility of their being racist have a greater tendency to actually be racist.

Also, that article on Libertarian HP= teh aw3s0m3.

The chick I thought especially wanky was the one who was going on how being anti-gay was okay because we hadn't proved yet that gay is in the blood like being Muggleborn.

Okay. Muggleborns and Squibs turn up in families that are opposite from what they are. The differences don't appear until puberty and they look and act just like everyone else until then.

Does this sound like being black or does this sound like being gay?

Really, I know Rowling loves to flog Godwin's Law, but think about it.

I think Lockhart might actually be a good President. He's good at the waving and the smiling, and all you'd have to do to get him to sign any bill is tell him it's a fan letter.

I know you post on here, so quit messing up the wank with that damn template. These aren't R/Hr's and H/Hr's duking it out for God's sake!

If the wank dies out, blame tybalt and that stupid template, ugh.

And screw the rules!(cause I know you're about to post the rules, blah!) *throws something at Tybalt*

Funny. I wrote a paper for my Intro to Writing class entitled "Harry Potter and the Gay Pride Parade."

It mostly revolved around Harry's relatives and their gross misconceptions of the wizarding world. (You draw your own obvious parallelisms)

It wasn't a great paper, honestly. Unsure whether I should be admitting all this. Hmm. I belong in i_wank, don't I? :: sigh ::
