Well folks, you knew it had to happen: with the release of the original Star Wars Trilogy on DVD, fanboys had to have their own wanky release:

Does it really matter if Solo shoots first or not?

I mean really. Get over it. If it's that imporant by the tapes at half-price books or something and tranfer them to dvd.

YES!

When Solo shoots first, it establishes his character as rough, ready, hotheaded and ruthless. This allows character growth and moral development through the movie, culminating in his last minute rescue.

By changing it to self-defense, they not only made him look utterly stupid (didn't even flinch at a shot inches from his face??) but robbed him of his growth arc.

It's not so much changing the character as Lucas systematically gone back and taken out any moral ambiguity to the good VS bad thing, where it wasn't all that subtle to begin with.

Most of the changes seem to be there to explain away flaws the good guys had, and make the badguys sooper speshul evol. Because it was really hard to tell on a couple characters, and character development is for pussies anyway.

So, I think George Lucas turning three of the best movies ever made into very expensive Saturday morning cartoons and trying to sell it as "how it was supposed to be" deserves the bitchfest it gets.

I got my pristine, unopened-still-in-shrink-wrap, original video box set off of eBay for $90. Now I just have to get them to DVD.

Chances are, once enough whining has ensued and the remakes have been out on DVD long enough, the "true" version will be put to DVD, but for twice the price and half the extras.

I feel strangely glad that I'm of the younger generation (born in '85) and have only seen the new versions (first on tv, then on videos).

Do people like me usually get shot if we get involved in these? Maybe I should go to that topic and be all "HEY GUYS, I really like the movies, aren't the older versions just worse quality? What's your problem?".

Just kidding, don't jump on me. Seriously, though, excluding the Han-introduction scene, is there any other majorly significant parts that have been tampered with that everyone's mad about?

I am not too fond of a lot of the changes that are being made, like pastede young!Anakin over old!Anakin, changing Boba Fett's voice, etc. In my opinion, they should have stopped with the cleaning-up of picture and sound quality, and left everything else alone.
