I Admit That I Am Powerless Over the Badfic...
I like badfic as much as the next person-- there's little more amusing than gathering in an AIM chat room to point and laugh at painfully maudlin Mary Sues, changing verb tenses in the same sentence multiple times, authors with no concept of grammatical or spelling conventions, ad nauseum-- but does the world really need an online support group for badfic? Some of those posts have been the Wankiest Wank That Ever Did Wank, and it's just a couple of weeks old. Oh, and you can only comment if you've got a LiveJournal, and even then, not everyone can *post*.

I highly recommend keeping an eye on this one. We'll be roasting S'mores by the warm glow of the flamewars there in no time.

I just hope they don't ruin the fun by going into lockdown mode.

It's been a closed community from when it started. Membership's never been denied, you just have to grab a mod's attention and get them to add you.

Personal mockery's been grouplocked because of certain people having issues (can't think why) and the general fandom mocking won't be locked unless the poster decides to do it that way, but really...

...we're not ruining our fun with it. If you want to play, all you have to do is join.

We don't need anonymous people running in, screaming "WANK!" while standing in a paddling-pool of spooge, and not leaving a name. *points at that little 'Anonymous- this user has disabled anonymous posting.' thing* Not that F_W has any experience with that sort, I know.

*shrug* It's just a place for us to discuss bad themes, share bitchiness and mock bad fic, bad story ideas, and bad writers in general. Mockity-mock-mock.

Hah. We got fandom_wanked. Thanks!

*scratching my head with one mangy paw* A group that intelligently discusses/critiques bad fanfic? I'm not seeing the wank. Sorry. Actually, NOT sorry. Sounds like a grudge to me.

And yet [info]slashcat says the community is:

"*shrug* It's just a place for us to discuss bad themes, share bitchiness and mock bad fic, bad story ideas, and bad writers in general. Mockity-mock-mock."

I dunno. I mean, it sounds great and all that, but not particularly enlightening as "intelligent critique". And that closed thing ... attempting to guarantee hassle-free wanking is perhaps the wankiest thing of all.

It's not enlightening. But it's all in good fun, I suppose.

I think the closed community is a good idea actually. As a friend of the person who started the community, she doesn't have the patience to deal with obvious morons. Or actually, she just doesn't like most people, period, heh. Sure, the closed community won't guarantee hassle-free wanking, but it's just a general first line of defense sort of deal. It's easy enough to join up as it is.

*shrug* Bitching under controlled response conditions?

Not my cuppa. Critics should not only expect giant knuckle-sandwiches from any and all callers, dumbass and otherwise, they should *devour* them. Hungrily. Gratefully.

Or else, they're not much of a critic. Hell, not even much of a bitch.

YMMV, as always.

I think it's all a matter of personal preference, really. I'm not exactly sure if MHC was taking some sort of ideological stand by making the community closed - except maybe, hey, if you're going to bitch, you will put your (online) name up to it and own up to it. If that means making the community closed and disabling anonymous comments, so be it.

Muah, I'm being hypocritical. I think somewhere in F_W's history I said that defending friends in F_W was blahblahblah. Ah well. The community will be a wealth of wank, for sure, but Lord strike me down with thunder on the spot if I haven't agreed with just about every post there so far.

Seems to me that disabling anonymous comments alone would take care of that quite nicely, but with the screening process and, if I'm not mistaken, internally friends-locked badfic/author bitchrant posts, this seems like an attempt to turn up the stove and roast at will without breaking a sweat.

Which is great, if that's your thing, but I wouldn't be too surprised if folks' imaginations start conjuring all sorts of things that will probably be worst than the meanest post ever put there and yes, Miss Windy is right, that's when the real Wankfest will start.

Which is where we'll come in, I guess. Ahhhhh. I'm feeling toasty already.

Last post, I promise, but just to clarify:

The friends-locked posts are to avoid getting ToS'ed. We'll see how well that works.

Did you read the endless posts pontificating about what makes for good fiction? And this is different from any post in Sarah T's blog how, exactly?

Sorry. Actually, NOT sorry. Sounds like a grudge to me.

Except that I don't know any of those folks from Adam, except rageprufrock, who seems nice enough from our interactions here on F_W. I just found the link off someone else's LJ.

F_W= equal opportunity.

I joined because it read to me like Godawful Fan Fiction on LJ. I like GAFF.

And, the real-time trainwreck in slow-motion with live commentary that is the Domlijah Tinhat Brigade seems to be winding down. I'll need more sources of stuff to make me think, "Bitch, are your for real?" ;)

I do too. Because, unlike BFSupport... how to put this delicately... GAFF is amusing and humorous. BFS seems to actually be a place for people to post 900 paragraph essays ranting about what, exactly, about suchandsuch badfic got their blood pressure skyrocketing. Eeep.

I'm so disappointed. When you said "an online support group for badfic" I thought you meant a place for badfic writers to come together and whine support each other. You know, a "Y r tehy so meeeeeeeen?? y dont they liek my viggorli story 'Touching teh angel'???? it has liek death n nsync songs n stuff!!!!!1"

The world needs a group like that.

I joined, because I *like* long, possibly wanky essays on how other people's fanfic pisses someone off. I enjoy them, and I do enough wanking that way myself... And I'll always take serious wanking over wankery that attempts to be funny and fails dismally, the speciality of most badfic communities.

Althought it does amuse me terribly that at least one community member is someone I consider a badfic writer.
