Wank, strange wank, a starwoman teaches...
petshopboy1983 posts the following on several Star Trek communites, wonders why he gets flamed, deletes the original posts, and then whines about it in his own journal:

Somewhere along the line, a show was aired called Xena: Warrior Princess. It was produced by a man named Sam Raimi. Sam Raimi knows how to do one thing and one thing only. Package bullshit, make it smell good to people who are craving a genre, and mass produce it. Xena was a ludicrously ridiculous show with ridiculous characters, horrible acting, horrible stories, horrible dialogue...but wait! It was extremely popular with one demographic...women. It had two things that women want to watch...attractive people, and "strong" female characters. Suddenly, overnight, it no longer mattered if a show was well written or had the slightest iota of thought put into it. As long as all of the characters were eye-candy and there were tough, HOT, women running around controlling the action...WE HAVE GOOD RATINGS! Now I don't mean to get off on a sexist tangent here, because that is not at all the intent of this, but let's face it, women watch fucking stupid television shows, and before you say this is ridiculous, I would put it to you that General Hospital has been running since the 50's. Women, and gay men for that matter, seem to have NO taste when it comes to mass media.

Unfortunately, I do not have screencaps of the original wankfests, but there is some commentary here and here.

ETA: On a mostly unrelated note, Neelix gets voted into the "fucking_fine" LJ ratings community.

...I think I have taught myself the usage of creative sentence structure. Even if I haven't, I've amused myself.
People like him are the downfall of Sci-Fi. I mean, wtf?
Everyone knows Xena is like, ...um...not Sci-Fi....cause...it's -not-.

Okay, sci-fi, which spawned Sturgeon's Law. Suuuure it was a paragon of all things well-written and non-schlocky, kiddo. Sure it was.

I grew up on SF and love it still, but please.

Plus, this:
As long as all of the characters were eye-candy and there were tough, HOT, women running around controlling the action...WE HAVE GOOD RATINGS!

yyyyyyeah, because of the women tuning in to drool over all the hot, spandex-clad space babes. Mmmmhm.

Kids, no matter what your gender or your sexual orientation, much of what is called common sense flies out the window when faced with teh sexay. Women and gay men do not have the market cornered on this one.

And in other news, grown men are willing to sit through the Lizzie McGuire movie and A Cinderella Story. No taste when it comes to mass media, ey?

What on EARTH does *Xena* have to do with Sci-fi?

Last I checked the show was of a fantasy series, not a Sci-Fi one.

/bitter Though I guess being turned down so often by people who'd rather watch the show then date him must've had a bad effect /bitter

Which is funny and ironic all at the same time when viewing his screen name... The Petshop Boys were not only a gay band, but they were a bad gay band, when you get right down to it. (Though, I love them dearly, I have bad taste and I'm proud of that.) Is his taste in music of greater, equal or lesser value in terms of 'bad' than "women and gay men"'s taste in other media?

God, I so want to turn his male chauvinist pig ass into some nice bacon.

Women do NOT watch stupid TV shows!! The girls I know watch some pretty deep shit...it's just the older generation, like my mom, who pidgeonhole themsleves into watching gender-typed shows (OK, and a lot of young teenaged girls). I happen to like some of the animes that my female buddies watch. Oh, never mind...I'm a gay guy, which means I'm really a woman by this guy's fucked-up logic, but I'm an FtM, and that means that somehow my transistion is worthless. Fuck you, wanky chauvinist asshole. >__<;;

Actually, I don't know a single woman who ever watched Xena, lesbian friends included.

Women are responsible for all bad tv? They put hot girls on TV so women and gay men would watch it? Sam Raimi was responsible for Xena? Now I know he's talking out his ass, everybody knows Xena was Rob Tapert's fault. --Uh oh. My fandom is showing.

But seriously, if hot girls, bad sci-fi, and Sam Raimi guaranteed good ratings wouldn't "Cleopatra 2525" have made it past 6 episodes?

My, why is mysogony getting such a raise, and why is a person who claims to be a Star Trek intelectual so homophobic? Didn't the series promote tolerance, of all things? Nah, must be wrong.

Aside from the fact that, well, Star Trek -wasn't intelectual- in the first place, lol. Some fans should just stop to try to place attributes all over their favorite series to make themselves superiour.

Women and gay men, Know your limits! You may make up more than 50% of the population, but you will not be permitted to watch television any more until you have learned some taste! You must watch in-tell-ec-shu-wal shows like, um, Star Trek! And nothing with hot women in it! So no more Buffy for you! And in fact, no Star Trek either! Turn the television off and back away slowly...

By order of the ruling straight male elite.

Oh, and this:

Sam Raimi knows how to do one thing and one thing only. Package bullshit, make it smell good to people who are craving a genre, and mass produce it.

Honey, if that describes Sam Raimi, then it sure as hell describes Gene Roddenberry. And at least Raimi never wrote absolute crap lyrics for his opening themes just so say he was a co-write and make money off it, when he never had any intention of recording the thing with lyrics ever anyway.

At least, I don't think ever he did...

From secanth's commentary:

"The only SF shows he seemed to approve of at all were B5 and the earlier trek."

If I told him that I watched it not just for the dramatic arc but also for Claudia Christian, does it make it crap that appeals to women and gay men?

Dontcha love being told that over 50% of the population have NO RIGHT to watch what they want - they must bow down, be properly submissive and watch whatever dreck Het Males decide is appropriate.

'Cos, you know, Het Males have such great taste. Witness such lovely things as "The Man Show".

Sci-fi/fantasy is all about the T and A, you know. How dare women and gay men want something different! They're depriving Het Men of their god-given rights to cute girls in tight outfits! They're being deprived of their necessary diet of blood, guts and T'n'A! How dare we!

Oh, someone should point out that it wasn't female fans that took one of the most popular series ever, cleansed it, cleaned it, and made the romance the central point of the show. That was George Lucas, who is, as far as I know, a Het Male.

So hot women who like do stuff are bad, so deas that mean that hot women who just stand there and do nothing (Counselor Troi, 7 of 9 yatta yatta) are of the okay? Not to mention that Sci-Fi tends to attract a cultish following which sort of negates the whole must be well written to be enojoyed thing. The original Star Trek is tacky as hell, bad acting, bad writing but so so entertaining.

But then, I'm just a woman with bad taste, what the hell do I know?
