Wank, strange wank, a starwoman teaches...
petshopboy1983 posts the following on several Star Trek communites, wonders why he gets flamed, deletes the original posts, and then whines about it in his own journal:
Somewhere along the line, a show was aired called Xena: Warrior Princess. It was produced by a man named Sam Raimi. Sam Raimi knows how to do one thing and one thing only. Package bullshit, make it smell good to people who are craving a genre, and mass produce it. Xena was a ludicrously ridiculous show with ridiculous characters, horrible acting, horrible stories, horrible dialogue...but wait! It was extremely popular with one demographic...women. It had two things that women want to watch...attractive people, and "strong" female characters. Suddenly, overnight, it no longer mattered if a show was well written or had the slightest iota of thought put into it. As long as all of the characters were eye-candy and there were tough, HOT, women running around controlling the action...WE HAVE GOOD RATINGS! Now I don't mean to get off on a sexist tangent here, because that is not at all the intent of this, but let's face it, women watch fucking stupid television shows, and before you say this is ridiculous, I would put it to you that General Hospital has been running since the 50's. Women, and gay men for that matter, seem to have NO taste when it comes to mass media.
Unfortunately, I do not have screencaps of the original wankfests, but there is some commentary here and here.
ETA: On a mostly unrelated note, Neelix gets voted into the "fucking_fine" LJ ratings community.
